  1. If you can locate them shipping corners which separate inner boxes from outer boxes they can provide a very stabilizing environment for shipping delicates. Sadly most of the stuff I get via UPS, in particular, appears to have been drop kicked cross country. I've received one item from them so breached that packing peanuts trailed from the truck to my door. Regarding e-bay their shipping calculator feature allows the seller to accommodate for handling fees. But, this should all be done in advance of the transaction. Interestingly I received an RS-7 whose shipping box took a forklift hit without damage the speaker. On the other hand my new Khorn boxes are so chewed up that I may decide to dispose of them. They look as though they were dragged (or pushed) across a gravel parking lot.
  2. At the risk of sounding socialistic I proffer the following. Our armed forces have gotten into the habit of re-inventing themselves thru a range of programs. They are much more efficient now than ever before and continue to examine better ways to be better. Our health care system(s) are just the opposite. Bottom line is that every dollar taken for profit is a dollar less for hands-on patient care. It's more than just health care it's also prevention. Take tobacco for example. Here's a proven health disaster that has no redeeming value which is allowed to exist becasue of its de-facto business status. In total, side to side, top to bottom, all facets of the nations health perspectives needs a new attitude. That said, a longshoreman at the L.A. harbor makes more than double what an R.N. makes, gets off every holiday and has killer benefits. M.D.s plow out 10 plus years of rigorous education. Being on the delivery side of health care is really taxing and pays less than most imagine. Succesful real estate agents and mortgage reps make what most docs do with very nominal formal education. So, society has a lot of stuff back-asswards. Yet I feel that health care and perhaps the legal system could both be compartmentalized enough to balance need, advancement AND keep providers willing and happy as well.
  3. Sorry to hear about your health problems. Unless you've been there few people understand how much NOT getting monetary assistance compounds the entire situation. In most states there is a shorter term of disability help available. In Ca. it covered 12 months. I too am on SSDI and it took an attorney to get me here even though I was paralyzed in both arms and wracked with pain. Medicare on SSDI is the same as elsewhere with a very big exception. NONE of the insurance carriers who offer supplemental policies to the older retired people offer such policies to the disabled. This is because they know we're sick and won't be a profit center. So you are to use Medicare in it's raw form and must find clinicians willing to work directly with the system, which ain't easy. Hopefully you will soon be 100% again. Health is greatly under appreciated until it goes southward. Best to yourself and your family.
  4. Oh boy!!! BOID jokes!!! A duck walks N2 a drug store and says, "Gimme some Chapstick and put it on my bill".
  5. A saga well worth all the effort indeed! I should like to brag now. My blonde, blue-eyed wife upon learning of my serious quest for used Khorns insisted that I buy new (seriously). SHE WANTED a room dedicated to home theater and the downstairs are devoted to 2 channel sound. Go figure!?! I must be doing something right!!!
  6. Friend Meuge. Tis the folly of some who announce the "letters" after their name to be more arrogant than wise. Perhaps this may be your affliction, perhaps not. Regardless, opinions are opinions and dare I say that I probably respect yours more so than you respect any other than your own.
  7. As I stated people individually choose what's correct or not....and, obviously your choices are made. Watch out for that blood pressure problem.
  8. Movies and movie makers, producers, writers, performers, etc... Hollywierd is celluloid and humans are human. Cinema is an extremely powerful medium and it's entertainment value is often abused and frequently mis-interpreted. Regarding the Passion it's at least honest about it's message, content and purpose. In the movie Saving Private Ryan director Speilberg inserted the scene wherein a smallish Jewish soldier is slowly and painfully stabbed to death by a big and merciless German soldier while nearby a sniveling American soldier is depicted as too cowardly to intervene. The analogy is obvious and wholly unecessary to the story line. Covert messages are much worse than are overt ones. Film making is an art AND a science. It's well know for it uses in propaganda, etc.... The moviegoers decide what's right and wrong, good and bad. Having grown up in West L.A. I've known several actors and their families, which is why I watch the Discovery Channel.
  9. I agree you can hide the gear and keep it out of harms way by locating it in a nearby enclosed space. As such the rack needs to be functional, not particularly showy (or expensive). With a universal remote you can command all functions without having to see or have immediate access to your components. The only time you'll need to get to them would be to insert DVDs and the like. Good luck!
  10. I constructed a recessed area beneath my Plasma large enough to house a centered RC-7. It needs enough space/volume above, below, behind and on both sides to allow the rear firing bass to easily come forward. Too small a space and it will echo. Sorry, no pics here.
  11. Dilemmas are a pain. You can use most players strictly as modes of reading CDs or transports. The digital signal is "uploaded" into a separate computer (DAC) component which then processes the digital signal N2 analogue for your listening pleasure(s). If you use a player in this manner you bypass all of that players signal processing. It simply isn't used (or needed). Therefore if this is the intended configuration you don't need to obtain an expensive CD player, just one that samples well. There are players designed to be used only as transports and, indeed, your current player may provide adequate upsampling performance. Then you will be looking to find a DAC that meets the wallet and the ears. The downside is that no DAC upsamples SACD signals. So if your future looks to having SACD then current DACs won't be adaptable. If you want SACD then you will be looking for a CD unit that also reads SACD, etc... It will be a stand alone component. Lastly, you might consider waiting. It seems that there's always something better around the corner. Personally, I believe that the CD world is ripe for something "new and amazing". Don't know for sure and maybe other Forum members do. Input anyone?? Good luck and happy days!!
  12. I run an older Marantz SR-8000 A/V and am quite pleased. I tried at one juncture to contact Marantz (America) directly for some customer support and could not find anyway to do so. I never did define a contact pathway for this company. Anyone else have a similar experience or know how to reach Marantz customer service???
  13. Sorry. Can't resist. 2 blondes on either side of a river. Blonde #1 to blonde #2: "Can you help me? How do I get to the other side? I can't get to the other side!" Blonde #2, in response: "You're already on the other side!!"
  14. Curious'r and curious'r. Do be a newbie, don't be a wannabe.
  15. If I may? Which I shall. I ushered at the Hollywood Bowl from 68 to 70. Since I've pursued the audio quest to best mirror that experience. It ended in 1976 whence I first heard the Klipschorn. Couldn't afford them but I heard them. Got the 4311's and still have them. Play them loud: play them with Zepplin and they've always been fun. Got K-horns in "86" and fulminated with pleasure. Dropped K-horns in 2002 and weeped (sometimes profusely). Got K-horns back in 2004 and will most likely be buried with them. Stop futzing about and do the big one. New or vintage the Klipschorn is THE ticket to END the search for fidelity. Period, thank you!
  16. "18", by Pat Metheny, very well done little rip.
  17. A good line power conditioner will provide all of your components with the proper and consistent current they require for ideal performance. I heard the difference the moment I added my Balanced Power conditioner to my system. It eliminated artifact from changes caused from house current fluctuations as well as utility current variations (such as brown-outs).
  18. I use a little Cary (SLI-80) triode tube amp for my horns. Having no adjustment for treble or bass I vary performance by using different brand/age tubes and adjusting power tube bias (within boundaries). The system breathes with the music. It's fuller and the sound stage very discernable. The bass can part your hair. In my opinion tubes have more character than SS. That said you need to find tube product whose character meets your listening and budget expectations. Finding the opportunity to preview various products is the true crunch. Best of luck.
  19. It will take 2 people, one to hold the speaker the second to attach the wires. Once the wires are attached capture the screws in the slotted rear brackets and set the speaker. They're supposed to appear seamless to the wall. The job isn't easy but done right will only need doing one time. Good luck.
  20. I may well get chewed out 4 this but here goes. It's curious that the forum is pondering the finer points of "plurality" when spelling and grammar in general are both so atrocious. Nuf said. Sorry if anyone is offended.
  21. I've got a full 7 series plus the RSW-15 in a smallish (15 X 17) room. The plasma is wall mounted. I recessed the RC-7, hung the RS-7s from the ceiling and put all the electronics in an adjaecent space (controlled by a universal MX-600 unit). So the room has just seating, the RF-7s and sub on the floor. Sounds great and looks good too.
  22. Glad to hear that the Toro 1800 works good for short falls. I just got one and it feels like a toy more than a machine. Doesn't snow much where I'm at either and I'm only going to clear nice, neat concrete.
  23. I use the MX-600 and it meets all of your criteria. It seems daunting to begin with but is actually very easy to program and use.
  24. Sorry 2 B late. The model # was 30.0 CA They are designed to hold 30 lb units and the RS-7 comes just under that limit. Omni mount is at 800.668.6848. Good Luck.
