  1. Today's the day David!!! Hope you have a great time!! By the way.....thanks for the latest cds you sent. I'll return the favor as soon as I find something interesting. Take care, Rick.
  2. Rob, Thanks for the info. and the link, but I'm still confused about "scaling" and "compatibility with higher resolutions through compression of the broadcast to fit the lower resolution display (like the 4805)". I'll have to consider the Panasonics, but Infocus is selling refurbished 4805s with a 76" screen and ceiling mount for $775 on Ebay ($799 shipped). That's sounding pretty good. I'll give them a call and ask a few questions. Rick.
  3. Rob, I'm thinking about buying a projector, too. Can you tell me what "doing HD native" means? Thanks, Rick.
  4. This must be the ones owned by Russell Coco. He's had them for years and has tried to sell them before at $6000. Here's a link to his AudioWeb ad from 1999 http://www.audioweb.com/Ad/AdInfo.asp?adid=35581. Rick.
  5. Hey Diz, You really cleaned up the crossover network! It looks beyond hope in that first picture. Everyone asked me if those speakers smelled like cigarette smoke. I didn't notice any........ Did you? Good luck, Rick.
  6. "I hefted the bags up on to the 2 1/5 foot wide tops of my old Klipsch horn loaded Cornerwalls. I listened for tone and contrasts by alternating the bags on and off." Cornerwall? Rick.
  7. Yes.....a big shock for me, too. I had been wondering about him lately. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family. Rick.
  8. "One disappointment was some of the cabinet's condition. There was some plywood delamination that didn't show in the photos. Just the outer layer, but fairly substantial in places. This will require cutting away the spoiled wood and performing a little plastic surgery before painting or fibreglassing. The majority of the boxes are very sound, but on some of the backs and bottom edges there is a few inches of moisture damage. All can be repaired, but I wanted to be totally up front about this for the next purchasor." Great rundown of events, Michael. I'm glad you and Steve made it home alright. Sorry if the cabinets were worse than you expected, but I feel that I was "totally up front" to everyone about the history and condition of those speakers. I posted pictures of them, sent more to you through e-mail, and still had more if you wanted them. You and I discussed the "delamination" issue that was shown in one of the pictures, so that shouldn't have been a surprise. That problem looked like an easy repair (to me anyway) compared to the damaged corners, holes drilled through the sides and tops, screws in places they're not supposed to be, blown tweeters, black paint everywhere, etc., that was mentioned in my ad. Are you sure that couldn't be fixed with a little wood glue and a clamp? As for "moisture damage"...... is that the same as "water damage"? I wish you had mentioned it when you were here. The speakers were hung from the ceiling in a bar about 15 miles from here for about 30(+-) years, during which time there's been no major floods and I don't believe the bar was ever on fire....at least not to the point where water was used to extinguish the flames. I had the bottoms off of all four cabinets, thoroughly inspected them inside and out and never saw the slightest hint of any water damage. If I had seen any, I would have told you, and eveyone else, all about it. At $200 for each speaker, there was no need for me to less than "totally up front" about anything. Anyway, I'll hold on to your check until you've had a chance to inspect the speakers some more. You're free to bring them back if you'd like. Just let me know what you decide. Later, Rick.
  9. Now that I have a chance, I'd like to say how nice it was to meet Michael and his brother today. Michael's knowledge of Klipsch speakers is amazing! He even took the time to get my Cornwalls properly positioned. We only moved them in a little bit, but it made a huge improvement. Thanks Mike!! I really look forward to meeting the rest of you folks some day (most of you anyway), especially after the stories Michael told on some of you guys!! Maybe at the next Indy get together........ Later, Rick.
  10. The "curly headed one" has left the building.......with four ugly Lascalas and an empty Cornwall cabinet. You should be hearing from him around 9 or 10 oclock tonight. He'll probably be looking for a good deal on a big subwoofer......or two.[] Rick.
  11. Kevin, You asked for "pricing feedback".............. IMO, $1995 is too high for those speakers. Especially for your forum buddies. I'm thinking $1300 to $1500 would be a reasonable price for Belles in that condition. Good luck, Rick.
  12. Klipsch used to send a paper with their speakers that explained the proper way to clean and care for them. Here's a copy.......... klipschcaretext.txt
  13. Steve, I'd like to get rid of the speakers soon, but it's no emergency or anything. Michael said he can get them in the next couple of weeks and that's fine with me. Besides, who wouldn't like to meet Michael? I've been reading his posts here for years, so it would be fun to have him over to hear my HT system. Both our systems have the same speakers.....four Cornwalls and a KLF-C7, so I'm sure he's got some good advice on proper setup. Rick.
  14. Pillows - a hot bed of fungal spores Researchers at The University of Manchester funded by the Fungal Research Trust have discovered millions of fungal spores right under our noses in our pillows. Aspergillus fumigatus, the species most commonly found in the pillows, is most likely to cause disease; and the resulting condition Aspergillosis has become the leading infectious cause of death in leukaemia and bone marrow transplant patients. Fungi also exacerbate asthma in adults. The researchers dissected both feather and synthetic samples and identified several thousand spores of fungus per gram of used pillow - more than a million spores per pillow. Fungal contamination of bedding was first studied in 1936, but there have been no reports in the last seventy years. For this new study, which was published online today in the scientific journal Allergy, the team studied samples from ten pillows with between 1.5 and 20 years of regular use. Each pillow was found to contain a substantial fungal load, with four to 16 different species being identified per sample and even higher numbers found in synthetic pillows. The microscopic fungus Aspergillus fumigatus was particularly evident in synthetic pillows, and fungi as diverse as bread and vine moulds and those usually found on damp walls and in showers were also found. Professor Ashley Woodcock who led the research said: "We know that pillows are inhabited by the house dust mite which eats fungi, and one theory is that the fungi are in turn using the house dust mites' faeces as a major source of nitrogen and nutrition (along with human skin scales). There could therefore be a 'miniature ecosystem' at work inside our pillows." Aspergillus is a very common fungus, carried in the air as well as being found in cellars, household plant pots, compost, computers and ground pepper and spices. Invasive Aspergillosis occurs mainly in the lungs and sinuses, although it can spread to other organs such as the brain, and is becoming increasingly common across other patient groups. It is very difficult to treat, and as many as 1 in 25 patients who die in modern European teaching hospitals have the disease. Immuno-compromised patients such as transplantation, AIDS and steroid treatment patients are also frequently affected with life-threatening Aspergillus pneumonia and sinusitis. Fortunately, hospital pillows have plastic covers and so are unlikely to cause problems, but patients being discharged home - where pillows may be old and fungus-infected - could be at risk of infection. Aspergillus can also worsen asthma, particularly in adults who have had asthma for many years, and cause allergic sinusitis in patients with allergic tendencies. Constant exposure to fungus in bed could be problematic. It can also get into the lung cavities created by tuberculosis which affects a third of the world's population, causing general ill-health and bleeding in the lung, as well as causing a range of plant and animal diseases. Dr Geoffrey Scott, Chairman of the Fungal Research Trust which funded the study, said: "These new findings are potentially of major significance to people with allergic diseases of the lungs and damaged immune systems - especially those being sent home from hospital." Professor Ashley Woodcock added: "Since patients spend a third of their life sleeping and breathing close to a potentially large and varied source of fungi, these findings certainly have important implications for patients with respiratory disease - especially asthma and sinusitis." A version of this story is running on CNN today. They added that Swedish scientists tested a 15 year old bed pillow and found that 80% of it's weight consisted of dust mites and their feces!!!
  15. Guys, Michael needs these about as much as I do......maybe less.....but he's decided to come get them anyway. Michael, The tweeter diaphragms should be here Monday, so anytime next week is good for me.....the sooner, the better. Please let me know when this can happen or if you change your mind.
  16. I saw this on the first day and can't stop thinking about it. My father/best friend/coolest guy I ever met died from cancer three years ago. He felt bad for a long time before going to the doctor and the cancer had spread throughout his body by the time he received the diagnosis. He tried chemo, but it didn't help much, and he seemed to give up hope a few months before he passed. In his last days, I asked him if there was anything he wanted me to know. The very last words he spoke to me were "Never give up". Lynn, you said you weren't feeling well for some time before being diagnosed. If it's not too much to ask, would you care to tell us what the earliest signs were that something was wrong? Many of us here are middle aged guys, so this kind of info could be vey helpful. Most of all, keep a positive attitude and NEVER GIVE UP!!! Rick.
  17. You can get the diaphragms from simplyspeakers.com for $24/ea.
  18. The Cornwall is sold. By the way..........can you guys see my pictures?
