  2. Hey! wouldn't it be hilarious if that guy was just re-packaging Joseph Lau's stuff and adding three digits to the prices? LMAO! really that stuff looks just like Lau's boxes with big tranny covers, etc...sounds a little like the hoopla over Mark Levinson's added zero amp!...tony
  3. favorite guitarist, singular? well...Carlos Santana or course...if you want plural just ask...add Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, David Gilmour, Rick Derringer, Gary Moore, SRV, Peter Frampton, Mark Knopfler, Dicky Betts...ok, ok I will stop there...warm regards, tony This message has been edited by sunnysal on 02-20-2002 at 02:26 PM
  4. I have the RB-5s but not the II version...MTC...great speakers! if the II versions have improved on something they should be absolutely amazing! watch out for the rear port though it can spoil a bookshelf instalation, these babies like to be away fromthe back wall!...warm regards, tony
  5. Justin you have a great amp there! that unit was the very best marantz made in the mid-seventies...heavy as all get out...let me ring in as another guy who would buy it from you...ENJOY IT! ------------------ *1993 K-Horns w/ ALK x-overs*Marantz 7T preamp*Dynaco MkIV monoblocks (modded to triode)*Sony CDP-CX350 and CX-230 CD changers*MSB link DACIII (96k upsampling)*MSB silver digital director (for switching and jitter reduction)*Technics M-85 professional Cassette Deck*SAE MK VIII tuner*Luxman PD-272 turntable, Grado Red cartridge*Cardas Crosslink speaker cable*Monster M550i for all interconnects*Monster HTS3500 Reference Powercenter Conditioner

  7. I am sure ray is right about few DACs bettering the adcom...so think carefully before upgrading. I did buy a link III (with the upsampling upgrade) and love what it did to my system...I admit that I was mmoving up from base ground, the built in DACs on my Sony CD changers...but there is no doubt that the MSB DAC is a great sounding unit AND that the DAC has the greatest affect on the CDs sound (more than the transport)...can you get a loaner to try? if you live in el salvador I would be glad to loan it to you for an afternoon listening session!...warm regards and good luck, tony
  8. like synth freak I got BACK into vinyl by getting a used turntable, a cheap cartridge, etc. I AM enjoying my old records, especially those which I have not found on CD (talking heads - "the name of this band is talking heads" for example)and have even considered b uying a few albums new, who could resist a hi-fi version of "kind of blue"???? anyway now I just need to resist the urge to upgrade the table, the cartridge, the preamp, etc....arrggghhhh, tony ------------------ *1993 K-Horns w/ ALK x-overs*Marantz 7T preamp*Dynaco MkIV monoblocks (modded to triode)*Sony CDP-CX350 and CX-230 CD changers*MSB link DACIII (96k upsampling)*MSB silver digital director (for switching and jitter reduction)*Technics M-85 professional Cassette Deck*SAE MK VIII tuner*Luxman PD-272 turntable, Grado Red cartridge*Cardas Crosslink speaker cable*Monster M550i for all interconnects*Monster HTS3500 Reference Powercenter Conditioner
  9. just my two cents...I have grado 80's and the little creek headphone amp and they sound great and have been quite comfortable for me to date...before these I was stupid enought to buy the senn 500 fusion's...these were absolutley the worst sounding headphones I have ever heard! booming, bloated bass that obscured everything else...just to make them listenable I had to plug them into my integrated amp and turn down the bass contrl almost all the way...and I love bass!...I have thought of saving up to buy a grado RS or the senn 600's...maybe next christmas...warm regards and congrats on the grados they are truly great sounding phones!...tony ------------------ *1993 K-Horns w/ ALK x-overs*Marantz 7T preamp*Dynaco MkIV monoblocks (modded to triode)*Sony CDP-CX350 and CX-230 CD changers*MSB link DACIII (96k upsampling)*MSB silver digital director (for switching and jitter reduction)*Technics M-85 professional Cassette Deck*SAE MK VIII tuner*Luxman PD-272 turntable, Grado Red cartridge*Cardas Crosslink speaker cable*Monster M550i for all interconnects*Monster HTS3500 Reference Powercenter Conditioner
  10. 11. I am curious arco, can you give more details on the tube amps...I want to know what we are comparing to these new amps...thanks and congrats sound like you've found "the amp" for your k-horns...I am still looking regards, tony ------------------ *1993 K-Horns w/ ALK x-overs*Marantz 7T preamp*Dynaco MkIV monoblocks (modded to triode)*Sony CDP-CX350 and CX-230 CD changers*MSB link DACIII (96k upsampling)*MSB silver digital director (for switching and jitter reduction)*Technics M-85 professional Cassette Deck*SAE MK VIII tuner*Luxman PD-272 turntable, Grado Red cartridge*Cardas Crosslink speaker cable*Monster M550i for all interconnects*Monster HTS3500 Reference Powercenter Conditioner
  12. I think randy bey would second the motion about the moondogs! he was searching and searching for quite a while for an amp and seems to be thrilled, almost a year later, with the moondogs...I have to "make do" with a old set of dynaco MkIVs modded to triode...not a 2A3 or 300B...but darn those k-horns love tubes! regards, tony ------------------ *1993 K-Horns w/ ALK x-overs*Marantz 7T preamp*Dynaco MkIV monoblocks (modded to triode)*Sony CDP-CX350 and CX-230 CD changers*MSB link DACIII (96k upsampling)*MSB silver digital director (for switching and jitter reduction)*Technics M-85 professional Cassette Deck*SAE MK VIII tuner*Luxman PD-272 turntable, Grado Red cartridge*Cardas Crosslink speaker cable*Monster M550i for all interconnects*Monster HTS3500 Reference Powercenter Conditioner
  13. djk...I kept the wire from the lower section and run it up to the alk crossover...the amps connect to the alk...the good news is that with the pioneer inegrated powering the patio speakers I now have no problems!...another piece off equipment goes into the closet! (sorry ADCOM)...regards, tony
  14. update...patio speaker problem solved...it was the ADCOM amp...as another b-boarder pointed out the adcom is a bridging amplifier and that was the reason given for it shutting down...if anyone can fill me in as to why the bridging amp should shut down I would be very grateful...since swapping the adcom for another amp it has worked fine ever since...re: my right k-horn and it burping of the mid-range squawker...well, I have toned down the volume a little and no re-occurnace in listening sessions...but at just the right frequency and loudness I can make it happen at will...aaarrrrgggghhhh...tony ------------------ *1993 K-Horns w/ ALK x-overs*Marantz 7T preamp*Dynaco MkIV monoblocks (modded to triode)*Sony CDP-CX350 and CX-230 CD changers*MSB link DACIII (96k upsampling)*MSB silver digital director (for switching and jitter reduction)*Technics M-85 professional Cassette Deck*SAE MK VIII tuner*Luxman PD-272 turntable, Grado Red cartridge*Cardas Crosslink speaker cable*Monster M550i for all interconnects*Monster HTS3500 Reference Powercenter Conditioner This message has been edited by sunnysal on 10-30-2001 at 12:59 PM
  15. it is true the material will affect impedance, as will numerous other factors...impedance is the AC equivalent of resistance (for DC) isn't that right?...anyway the facinating aspects of the article were related to this guy's measurement of echoes within cables (!) and his demonstration that by careful impedance matching these echoes could be eliminated (reduced)...It was a VERY persuasive article and put the impedance matching issue way up in priority over the material of the cable, that was what I was trying to get at...Ray, I would be really interested in your thoughts about the article...regards, tony
  16. tubenube...if you can afford tha la scalas and the room (and your mate) will accept them, they would be my number one choice for your situation...cornwalls seem to be a popular speaker as well...best of luck, tony
  17. But Al they are so pretty that I myself thought about mounting them outside my k-horns for the world to see! regards, tony
  18. I want to try djk's little amp!...I do have a question for you though djk, what would you have changed in that amp if you wanted to improve its performance? if you wanted to bring it up higher end? I am curious because guys like mr. pass and others have been telling us for years that you can build SS amp at modest prices with great sound...regards, tony
  19. The article talked about the need for impedance matching in audio cables and made an interesting argument for the fact that much of the differences heard in cables is actually due to the impedance characteristics and not to materials, etc. any thoughts? looked darn interesting to me...regards, tony
  20. well, randy I'll tell ya'...the other night I was feelin' fiesty and put on rage against the machine...holy cow! I found myself crankin' to literally gut thumping levels!...those K-horns really can PLAY LOUD...however the highs and upper mids do get beamy and kind of rough at those levels ;-) I wonder if need to go back to my Magnapans? NOT! It is true that with my SS amp the K-horns seem better controlled at those ridiculously high levels...the tube rig sounds best at "mildly loud" ...regards from head banger central here in sunny el salvador, Tony
  21. thanks ray...Marantz had half a dozen models with that input option, they must have thought it made some sort of difference in sound...perhaps this is an important issue in matching preamps to amps? Regards, tony This message has been edited by sunnysal on 10-23-2001 at 04:50 PM
  22. Colin, that´s EL34s for the ST-70 man...the volks amp is the original Pass aleph amp licensed to some guys for mass production, all that Pass stuff does sound marvelous BUT...my MkIVs sound as good to me and cost me less than half as much (after rebuild)...however some times when I am really crankin´ it up I do miss some SS umph! My McIntosh Integrated amp never ran out of steam!...God bless our hobby! Buy both! SS for those disco moments and some SET tube rig (300B anyone?) for that miles davis moment...et voila, stereo heaven...just remember those speakers stay the same! make mine Klipsch! regards, tony ------------------ *1993 K-Horns w/ ALK x-overs*Marantz 7T preamp*Dynaco MkIV monoblocks (modded to triode)*Sony CDP-CX350 and CX-230 CD changers*MSB link DACIII (96k upsampling)*MSB silver digital director (for switching and jitter reduction)*Technics M-85 professional Cassette Deck*SAE MK VIII tuner*Luxman PD-272 turntable, Grado Red cartridge*Cardas Crosslink speaker cable*Monster M550i for all interconnects*Monster HTS3500 Reference Powercenter Conditioner
  23. gentlemen, I have seen some Marantz amplifiers that have "DC" in the model designation...on the back panel they have a switch near the inputs that read "AC coupled" and "DC coupled" ... I have no idea what this means or what it does BUT this could be what t-man meant by a "DC" amp...anyone have light to shed?
  24. Though my work has kept me away from the forum lately...I LOVE THIS B-BOARD!...The fact that many have noticed a slight shift lately in tone and tolerance is, in my opinion, great proof that we are a community, a passionate one, who is truly interested in the "quality of life" here...compared to just about every other forum on the net the Klipsch forum stands out head and shoulders above the others in the quality of the information and genuine interest in each other's well being expressed daily here...all the others have "land mines"...I am constantly reminded in other forums of the potential for ugliness, ego, venting, etc. but on the Klipsch forum it is a ture rarity...I have made good friends here, gotten excellent information and help here, I will stay here...warm regards from sunny el salvador! 25. shock, sorry it took me so long to reply, I have been on a trip...my preamp is far from Hi-end...however I suspect it will sound better than the technics unit...I too agree with the others that your results sound as if your speakers are screwed up...muffled should not describe a pair of La Scalas!...don´t worry about the gift thing, if you want the preamp send me via e-mail your address and I will get a shipping quote (that will be your only cost)...however as others have pointed out (any many of us have learned through experience) these intermediate steps are almost always wasted...saving up for a truly top quality unit is usually much better (and much less frustrating) then going through two or three mid level units on the way...and by the way going straight for gold (after saving up) is always less expensive overall than acquiring all these other units on the way!!!...please give serious consideration to the possiblity that you are not liking the speakers or that they are damaged...can you find some good friend to lug a pair of speakers over to your home in order to hear your electronics through another set of transducers? that would go a long way towards troubleshooting this problem...everything but the tecnics preamp sounds great, I do not think the groos muffling should be due to that component...anyone who can loan you another preamp for an hour or so to see what happens with a preamp swap...well that´s all for now...best of luck, tony ------------------ *1993 K-Horns w/ ALK x-overs*Marantz 7T preamp*Dynaco MkIV monoblocks (modded to triode)*Sony CDP-CX350 and CX-230 CD changers*MSB link DACIII (96k upsampling)*MSB silver digital director (for switching and jitter reduction)*Technics M-85 professional Cassette Deck*SAE MK VIII tuner*Luxman PD-272 turntable, Grado Red cartridge*Cardas Crosslink speaker cable*Monster M550i for all interconnects*Monster HTS3500 Reference Powercenter Conditioner
