  1. I would imagine that lanolin found in "rubbing" alcohol could really gum things up. Lanolin is a skin conditioner and keeps the skin from drying out during a body rub. I was once told to find an old fashioned pharmacy and ask the pharmacist for some realitivly pure alcohol (97%). That being said you may want to reread what Marty said. How about just triple distilled water and a steam unit?
  2. I feel your pain Nailbender. I have recieved two totaled turntables over the last three years. One guy mailed a Thorens to me with wadded up newspaper for packing without removing the platter or securing the arm[8-)] What recourse do you have ? Insurance?
  3. I think JBryan was experimenting with an inexpensive steam machine from Kmart? or some discount store. Pauln also had a formula for home made record cleaning fluid in the same thread in 2 channel. Do a search on JBryan in 2 channel and it should be the second post there. Good luck.
  4. Oooooowww......I was almost tempted to reply "$3000"......[] Got snow there JJ?
  5. Just kidding[:^)] Thought someone might take my post seriously hence the edit.
  6. Yikes......a broken ankle.....You are a fan[] Great photo and attitude...glad you enjoyed the show.
  7. Welcome Jeff. Your father was a very well respected member of this forum as the three hundred post in three different threads will attest. We all miss him greatly and things will never be the same here. Thank you for posting. YoungBuckster......I like that. Chuck
  8. Can't say Hobie. I have only owned Teacs. Much good talk about Tandberg and Revox but I don't know about parts availability. Not a problem with Teac/Tascam. BTW.....welcome to the forum.
  9. Hi Russ, This is an old thread (2006) that Jay bumped today. I have changed the horn mono tubes twice since that post...first from the stock Tesla EL-34s to JJ KT-77s to EH 6550s. Yes the 6550s have a little more umph and fuller bass and I like them. They are less than a month old....not even burned in yet. I use Mike's interconnects and regular old 14 gauge speaker cable. My fine tuning at this point is limited to sliding the speakers around to different locations and listening for awhile. I think your minis have the same wattage as the horn monos and are made for tube rolling. Enjoy! Chuck
  10. Great to see you back Phil. I never post on HT but I saw your name the other day and thought I would welcome you back. Sounds like some homestead you are putting together! I know what you mean about salaries here.....they think that living at the beach is pay enough. Terrible news about the buckster.....I miss him already. I think with the three OB threads going we have over 260 post. Only a small tribute to a great guy. He was so good about taking newbies under his wing and often was the first to welcome them here. He will be missed. The wife still goes to Duke for check ups so maybe one of these days I'll run in to you. We are going to have a lot of Carolina basketball to talk about as well[]
  11. Yes those are the ones. Have also changed xovers (AL Klappenberger design). The speakers have been moved out of the corners and are now on the long wall which required moving furniture as well. The bass actually increased when I moved them out and they are no longer "wedged" in tight[] Thanks bluesboy.
  12. The same one Jay and you are welcome. Those are the R2Rs in the previous pics. I have new speakers since then and they are no longer in the corners. Maybe my bud bluesboy will post a picture of the new ones.....they are his handy work.
  13. Jay.....I have a name for you that I will send in a pm. He is in Seminole if that is anywhere near you. Kevin is a former trouble shooter for Dokorder and speaks R2R fluently.
  14. Why does your avatar say something different? North Carolina.....tommyboy....just a joke. People from NC are known as Tarheels as is The basketball team. Some login names are obvious like mine and say bluesboy who we know loves heavy metal[:^)]
  15. Welcome to the forum ecthelion. Sounds like a good deal. You may want to put them on the Garage Sale Forum above as well. Edit: Sorry...you already have it on Garage Sale as SWL points out. How do they sound?
  16. You are too hard on your self Bruce....they look great. Following your lead I started changing the position of the top hat of my speakers. My 511 Altec horn and Beyma tweeter are mounted in one baffle (see avatar) so I couldn't move one without the other. The problem I was attempting to remedy was the midrange being a little "in your face" or forward. I moved the baffle back till the horn was in the middle section of the bass bin and noticed a slight improvement. Does that make any sense? Opinions welcomed. Chuck
  17. Hi Phil....NC huh....Raleigh/Durham area in Spongworthy's neck of the woods. Welcome to NC[]
  18. A sad day indeed and a day to remember oldbuckster. I just did a search for some threads where we exchanged comments and found this one in the thread about Speakerfritz's 4000 posts. "Easy on the oldbuckster.......Let me assure everyone there is only One Oldbuckster, and that be me!!!!!!!!" I replied back "which one" and buckster shot back "The only one.....Me!!!!!! The one that would like to find that jazzjoint that Jack K. was talkin' about". There are many oldbucksterisms and memorable quotes that others will recall as we remember our friend over the next days. Buckster loved this forum and without a doubt it was therapeutic for him as well. I will miss his comments and presence here. I never got a chance to meet Rob though we had talked about meeting up at Coytee's Jubfest....he was going to hitch a ride with JB. Buckster.....save me a bar stool at Jack's jazzjoint.......we have some catching up to do! Chuck I
  19. Isn't it great when things work out like that. Very good looking gear MechMan[Y]
  20. yaya20052008......you have a private message. Chuck
  21. In response to your #4....I am envious. Please feel free to send me a pm and give me some pointers[]
  22. Thanks Artto......many good points. I agree with the sma/chart suggestion and have looked at that in the past. I really don't agree with the idea of ETFs. I think its much easier to research individual stocks and I think with ETFs you not only buy the top 20% performers but the bottom 80% as well. I guess I tend to agree with folks like Ken Heebner of the CGM funds who feel that diversification is for folks with little conviction in their picks. I will be the first to say that Ken isn't looking real smart right now but who is. Isn't it easier to keep track of 5-8 good stocks then the hundreds that make up an index?
  23. And Michael I did my part as well....I just spent $100 on a matched quad of EH 6550s for the horn monos. Enjoy the new addition!
  24. I agree with most everything that has been said previously particularly in respect to the market being driven by confidence and emotion. Though the down turn concerns me I guess I am more bothered by the fact that I don't have a lot of cash on the sideline and able to buy more at these prices. Believe me I have been buying hand over fist where I think there is a probable comeback in the future and yes I have heard the one about trying to catch a falling knife. I guess there is more than a bit of gambler in me but if you believe in the future of America then you have to believe that all the apples (companies, CEOs, or stocks) aren't bad. DJK I ordered Schiff's book through amazon this am....thanks. Thanks for all the opinions and suggestions and especially to Coytee for taking his time to share his thoughts with me by phone yesterday. It was great to get to put a voice with a name.
