Oops, missed that, Chuck - I see it in the long shot; not the old style with the dual phase plug. -

Thanks, Chad. -

A warning about the Xcelite stuff, and this applies to all of their plastic-handled tools: They smell terrible, and will off -gas forever. And not a typical plasticky smell, but more like a dirty diaper. Just heads-up. -
I've had Dave's Fastrac Horns installed for quite a while now, and IMO it's a worthwhile improvement over the K400. The Fastracs sound much more natural in tone, whereas the K400 sounds hard to my ears. There are even better solutions (as pointed out by others), and you may want to explore those avenues. One big plus of the Fastrac is that it's a drop-in upgrade. BTW, my macbook keeps auto-correcting Fastrac to Gastric.

I'm a drummer, and while I agree that dynamics are important to realistic reproduction, it's the details (of the sound) that makes it for me. Let's use the snare drum as an example: Can I hear the body/resonance of the snare? Ah, that's a maple or mahogany shell. Or is it choked, due to poor tuning? Is the wire set raw steel, or chromed snappies? Is that a single-ply coated head, or maybe a two-ply with damping? These aren't details that I necessarily care or think about when listening to music, but I will notice and be pleasantly surprised when they are properly reproduced.

What djk said. To increase the level 3dB from 1 Watt, double the power to 2W.

Thanks Chuck, I will post up a new thread for these. I've swapped the K-55 drivers back in and am rebuilding the crossovers as a type A with a 500Hz crossover point and mid horn -3db down from stock. All else is the same: Fastrac horns with Dave's aluminum motor boards, Crites tweeters, and original k-33 woofers. I'll post pics and details when they're ready to roll.

Looking good.

I've had good luck with post-it notes as well. Cleaned the gap up nicely.

You're right Chuck, it is too high. I've noticed this across lots of used markets; People refuse to admit we're in a looooong recession.

Chuck, are those Dan C's (you remember Dan from BioTek)? I think he put his up for sale recently. I read that as $3500/pr.

I know there are members here who are very protective of the original designs, and understandably so. Yes, the woofers and cabs are original, and I built the crossovers which are an A style with an additional cap to roll off the JBLs. I lived happily with these speakers in their stock config for many years before engaging in mods, so I was very familiar with their capabilities. When I installed mods, I did so one at a time, and then lived with the change for a while to see if I preferred the new configuration. In short, I was methodical and slow to make changes. IMO, this config improves on the original design in many areas, and I'm sure there are those who would be more than happy to have these speakers in their system. Honestly I think detailed pics would help a great deal. I'm going to try and borrow our camera and tripod from work to take pics this weekend. Pics of the cabinet, JBL diaphragms, CD mounts and horns, labels, and cabinets.
