  1. Don't forget Al, he's using a 902 driver. I would cross it up high.
  2. The GPA 902 doesn't get that low. I think Bill recommends crossing at 800 or 1kHz, somewhere in there. I can confirm that if you cross much lower, you'll hear some unpleasant sound. having said that, the 902 sounds wonderful in a two-way, with a bit of contouring.
  3. What a bummer, that is exactly what I have been after in a system. Its ability to recreate the environment of the recording. Many of the audio test discs tell you about the recording environment so you can compare how it sounds in your system. What, then, is it that we are trying to recreate with two speakers? I think you're misunderstanding. We are not trying to create the recorded environment in our listening rooms, we are trying to re-create it. Therefore the listening room environment will be much different due to the differing goals of reproduction vs production.
  4. It sounds like you're trading priorities. You're using a less efficient driver to gain extension. How did you balance the drivers without taking measurments?
  5. bkrop, that's a classic. Terrible, but tongue in cheek. I have it on my ipod.
  6. I've been ready for this thread for a looooong time. I give you, "Seasons in the sun". I gagged just typing that. Goodbye to you, my trusted friend. We've known each other since we're nine or ten. Together we climbed hills or trees. Learned of love and ABC's, skinned our hearts and skinned our knees. Goodbye my friend, it's hard to die, when all the birds are singing in the sky, Now that the spring is in the air. Pretty girls are everywhere. When you see them I'll be there. We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun. But the hills that we climbed were just seasons out of time. Goodbye, Papa, please pray for me, I was the black sheep of the family. You tried to teach me right from wrong. Too much wine and too much song, wonder how I get along. Goodbye, Papa, it's hard to die when all the birds are singing in the sky, Now that the spring is in the air. Little children everywhere. When you see them I'll be there. We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun. But the wine and the song, like the seasons, all have gone. Goodbye, Michelle, my little one. You gave me love and helped me find the sun. And every time that I was down you would always come around and get my feet back on the ground. Goodbye, Michelle, it's hard to die when all the bird are singing in the sky, Now that the spring is in the air. With the flowers ev'rywhere. I wish that we could both be there. We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun. But the stars we could reach were just starfishs on the beach
  7. Not with a 16-month old running around, I can't Listen, not all here are AK bashers. I for one am extremely grateful for all of the hard work put in on the econo-wave project, and that thread is an example of forums at their best.
  8. Same here. Don't have privileges to view that page .
  9. Very nice. I like the contrast between driver and cabs.
  10. I think ham's probably off QK's dietary list []
  11. Don't you mean, "Prepare to be sleep deprived for a loooooong time". Congratulations QK. Is she your first? You will fall in love like never before.
  12. A bit rude, LM, you never asked. DJK has a good suggestion, you should follow up (politely). 16 ohm tap output. Do you have multiple outputs on your tube amp, say labelled 4 ohm, 8 ohm, and 16 ohm?
  13. Good on you, a little sweat equity goes a long way.
  14. Did you get the transition to the tweeter nice and smooth (inside the horn) w/ no gaps?
  15. You're right, but I would qualify your statement by adding that $29 is without a horn, so you still have to buy appropriate horns. If you want drop-ins, you'll have to modify any of the various inexpensive horns that are available. That doesn't do much for the re-sale value of the components. Bob has custom made lenses that are drop-ins, threaded for the apt-50. Honestly, not a bad deal, especially used at ~ $120/pair.
  16. Have you asked the dealer if you can demo the table at home? If you get a good deal on the unit and it doesn't work out, you can always flip it and make back your money.
  17. That misinformation was from myself. I believe it was a mis-understanding; I asked the service rep for pricing on a stereo pair, horns and driver, and he replied $600. The concensus is that the rep either thought he was quoting a single horn/driver combo, or the wholesale price for a stereo pair (thinking I was a dealer). In any event, disregard the quote, as it does not apply to the retail cost of a stereo pair.
  18. A quick blurb by Wayne Parham concerning multiple subs: There are several advantages to using subwoofers. First is the greater extension provided. Most woofers are hard pressed to get much below 40Hz but a subwoofer will reach an octave lower. Second is the reduction of bandwidth required of the woofer or midwoofer. This makes the higher frequencies coming from the woofer more clear. This is extremely important in the midrange. Third is the possibility of smoothing room modes using more than one subwoofer. The multi-sub approach works by averaging out room modes using dense interference between sound sources. Low frequency sound travels very differently in a room than it does outdoors. Reflections from each wall, the floor and ceiling combine to form multiple virtual sources than cause interference with each subwoofer. These form nulls that are far enough apart to be noticeable. You can't get around the interference indoors so the only way to smooth the sound field is to increase the density of interference. Dense interference averages the sound field because the nodes and anti-nodes become so closely spaced they are indistinguishable. By using multiple subs, this can be accomplished, and the energy distribution is made smoother throughout the room. Instead of high-passing the mains, allow them to overlap with the subs. This will smooth bass response up to the Schroeder frequency, which is usually between 100Hz to 200Hz in most home listening rooms. When stereo mains are used, a single sub then provides a third sound source below the Schroeder frequency and a pair of subs added to the mains provides four sound sources. There is a lot to be gained by using at least two subs, and three subs is better. Four is better too, but beyond that the improvements aren't significant. Placement is important for this approach to work. Since it requires interference, the subs should not be placed within 1/4λ of the mains or each other. What is intended is for nulls formed by one sub and its boundary reflections to be filled in by other subs. Nodes from one subwoofer should align with anti-nodes from another. Since the position of each node changes with frequency, proper placement of each subwoofer is highly dependent on room layout, as is its crossover frequency. Sometimes it even makes sense to reverse phase on one or more subs; Remember again, it is interference that makes this work. In general, subs placed near the mains can be driven to a higher frequency. They'll be more effective at smoothing the higher frequency range in the modal region. Subs placed further away smooth lower frequency modes but should be crossed lower too. Sometimes a balance can be struck with a pair of woofers placed just a few feet from the mains, other times it makes more sense to position subwoofers further than that. Start with at least two subs, add one or two
  19. That's the one. Dave built a really nice version. LINK
  20. They look like polys to me. Couldn't hurt to refresh, even if withsome inexpensive Daytons.
  21. If they are similar in appearance to Sonicaps, they may be polys, in which case they are less likely to suffer with age. If you can post a pic, that would clarify which type of caps are used in those networks.
  22. Bob was just asking about this (plot of lascala bin). I tried a GPA902 with a gentle slope x-over, and I just couldn't cross the 902 low enough, without casuing distortion, and I ended up with a hole in the response. The ES x-overs might just be the ticket. I ran my set up as a two-way with some high frequency contour to flatten the HF, and, aside from the response hole, it sounded great.
  23. Larry, I think he wants to remove the coating from the endsto prep them for soldering. Joe, a solder pot will work best, but if you don't have a bunch of wire to solder and don't want to deal with the pot, the coating scrapes off easily with a razor blade.
  24. Good deal. Sometimes, depending on what the screw was plated with, coated with, etc., the wrench might fit a little snug. And if the wrenches are cheap, the termination at the wrench tip might be a bit unfinished, leaving burrs. Nothing a file can't cure.
  25. I think Maron displays great a-cumin.
