Hey guys - I'm looking to pick up some LaScalas that need work. I've rebuilt a pair of LaScala's before that were in just about the worst condition you can imagine physically and made them beautiful, but went through a divorce and had to sell them due to lack of space. I'd like to rebuild a pair again. I don't have a lot of cash flow, otherwise I would be paying 1500 for a pair. I'm located in Washington State. If anyone has a project pair laying around they don't need, I'd love to chat with you. Last pair was purchased off the forum for 400 bucks which was a great deal - all they needed was new crossovers and refinishing (they were covered in green wallpaper from the 70's and it was a HUGE PAIN to get it off and to sand and refinish). Get a Heresy for your center, place it on the floor on it's side, and tilt it towards you. That's how I had mine setup for a bit, it worked just fine. Also, with your room size, you probably wouldn't tell much difference if the speaker was to the side, especially if you compensate by moving the L/R accordingly. Just a thought.

I've heard the same thing. I ran a projector off of a wall with regular paint. I was renting a place for a short period of time and used their non reflective white walls as a screen. It actually worked beautifully. I'm sure the paint your referring to would work much better, but my friends and I were both amazed in the detail a blank white wall can provide to a projector. I honestly think people put too much emphisis on screens, but that's my opinion. In my perm setup, instead of buying a screen, I built one out of a material you can pick up at lowes for around 10 bucks a sheet. I don't remember what it was, but it worked perfectly.

Issues or not, Harman Kardon stands behind their products. You will be assured continual support. I've heard horror stories trying to get Onkyo, Yamaha, or Denon to do anything for their faulty work. HK will pay for the shipping, and have your unit back to you within a few weeks. Chances are you will have a perfectly functional unit and never have any issues, ESPECIALLY if it's a refurb. I've purchased several refurbs direct from HK and I did have an issue with an HK AVR-745 a few years back. I shipped it off to them and a non-refurb back in 2 weeks. For the price, and your speakers, there isn't a better receiver out there sound quality wise in my opinion.

Back when I ran a 7.1 setup (w/ Forte II's for all 4 rears), I ended up selling the 2nd set a few weeks after I installed them. In my opinion, they didn't add enough change to be worth it. I got the same effects from a 5.1 as I did 7.1. Now that I moved into a smaller space, I'm running 7.1 with the back 4 speakers for more ambiance than anything. I still can't tell the difference between the two. Maybe it's just me, but I think 5.1 pulls me into the movies enough! Get the amp, or another upgrade, sell it all!!

Ha! That's funny I will take some pics and get them out after the weekend. They look really nice though. There a bit larger than I wanted, but they are the smallest floor standing speakers they make. They really sound beautiful. Exactly what I was looking for - I'm sure they will grow on me even more, I only listened to them for about 3 hours last night, so I don't have placement setup exactly the way I want it and I didn't even change any settings in my receiver, so they will get better for sure. Seriously, at low or loud volumes, they portray every little detail in the soundtrack. Honestly, the upper end isn't as powerful as the LaScalas, but they are way more refined and just seem to be better (although not nearly as loud or powerful, but cleaner - I can't really describe it - I'm not a pro reviewer ) If your ever looking for a small setup, these really work well for me so far - I give them 2 thumbs up.

Well, I ended up going with an entire set of JM Labs/Focal speakers. I got the 716s Floorstanders, the CC700s Center and the SW 700S subwoofer and am using some small polk audio satellites as rear surrounds. Wow - these speakers are completely amazing. Extremely refined, they just give me the warm and fuzzies all over. I haven't been this excited about new speakers since I picked up my LaScalas a number of years ago. In a way, they remind me of the Lascalas. They have an amazing top end, but where the lascalas lack in the bass region, these things sound beautifully. I am also amazed at the sub and center. The sub only has a 300 watt amp, but it sounds great and is extremely musical. The center is very clean and portrays voices exactly as they should sound. I'm very happy with my purchase. If you guys haven't heard these yet, I suggest you take a demo. I was always impressed with the JM Labs Utopia Be speakers, and while these are no where near their performance, they have the same characteristics that make the Utopias sing!

Bose? Come on man, don't insult me Just because I'm looking outside of the Klipsch family doesn't make me a bad person Come on guys- I've owned at one time or another about 70% of the Klipsch product line excluding the low end synergy line, icon, and the new P's I've heard and owned just about all of it. I've had an all Heresy theater before and it was great, but I want to try something else. I thought since most of us here are audiophiles that there would be more opinions outside the Klipsch product line for what I'm looking for. And seeing as I've been a somewhat active forum member, I thought I'd have more people suggesting stuff. I guess I may need to test the waters at avs or something to see what those guys say. I will keep you posted as to what I go with - thanks for trying to help!

OK, let me phrase it this way, excluding ALL Klipsch setups, what would you do?

Well, ideally, I'm thinking either a specific home theater setup (like an M&K HT Setup, they have products that LOOK similar to Klipsch's THX Ultra but are MUCH more affordable due to their used nature but I've never auditioned them and probably wouldn't have a chance to). I've also thought of getting a really nice set of front 3 and using some satellites I already have for the rear surrounds (don't lecture me about timber matching, I think I will be able to adjust for the sound differences by placement and adjustments in the preamp). Some of the front 3 I've looked at are the Sonus Faber Concerto line (which look amazing and have great reviews, but I wouldn't be able to hear em), a setup of B&W bookshelves and a nice center, I have a line on some Focal bookshelves, etc. Bottom line is I doubt I'm going to get a floorstanding system for this room, so I'm thinking bookshelves are going to be my best bet OR a setup that is smaller and specifically designed for HT in mind. Are there any budget systems out there similar to the THX Ultra? Keep in mind guys, I've looked through the Klipsch product line and I really don't think Klipsch has what I'm looking for except for maybe some of their higher end bookshelves or the THX ultra, and I know this is a Klipsch site, but it's also the best forum I subscribe to, and I am hoping that even though I'm going outside of the Klipsch family, you guys can help me out as I've been a loyal Klipsch fan for years, but it's time to change things up a bit.

Ok guys, my intention wasn't to start a pissing match between everyone. Let me be clear, the Lascalas are too big for the room. There ARE speakers smaller than LaScalas that sound better at lower volumes, sure sound is variable from person to person, but let's face it, Lascalas are great, but there are definetly better speakers out there. Does anyone have any constructive ideas for me? I will build the system around the speakers, so don't worry about amps, etc. The room is mid sized, maybe 10x16 or so.

Hey people, I need your help! I just moved and my LaScala setup isn't going to be efficient in my new home. I need something smaller (which is killing me!). I want a home theater that sounds AMAZING - PERFECT - BETTER THAN THE LASCALAS - at a LOW!! volume. Unfortunately, loud isn't going to be an option, so I need something that blends well with home theater applications at low volumes, so it's going to have to be something high end. I've been looking at some bookshelf speakers, and there seems to be a lot of really high end ones out there, but I really can't see paying 3 or 4k for a bookshelf speaker. I'm thinking I'm going to end up buying USED for sure, so I can be patient and wait for a good deal to come on the market, but I really don't know what to get. If you were making a HT setup with high end units to be played at low to mid volumes, what would you get? I can't wait to hear the replies - it DOES NOT need to be Klipsch.

I think it is better when fewer have it. I definately think the health care will be better today vs 5 years from now. I don't believe healthcare, welfare, social security are a right just because you were born in the US. And I'm an Obama supporter (for the most part).

I 2nd Haloween (the original). I think it has the best score of any horror film. Simple, but effective.

FWIW, prior to entering into Klipsch, I picked up a Bose Acoustamass 12 on CL for 200 bucks with all the bells and whistles. The main power cord was missing and while I ordered a new one from Bose (about 75 bucks if my memory serves me correctly), I hooked it up to a 75wpc receiver I had laying around (I'm not 100% what the model was, but it was a pioneer). Long story short, by the time the cord came for me to hook up the actual Bose components, I had blown 2 of the cubes playing at moderate levels. I think the actual bose units provide extremely low watts to their speakers because it definately wasn't an issue with the receiver. Just a word of caution, I would take it easy on the little boxes until I was sure they weren't going to explode

Depending on your room dimensions, you could probably get by with Heresy's for your surround channels and a LS Center.

LaScala's are so efficient that I would think Bi-amping wouldn't help much. They are already not using what you have pushing it (probably). I could be wrong, but at 104db/1watt, 100 watts should be overkill for all 3 drivers. Lascalas in general lack in the bass dept. Personally, for me, I think they have plenty of bass (although, I know there is a lot I'm not hearing w/o sub). A good, quality sub should make you happy. Look into something DIY. You can get much more performance for less buck.

Wuzzer - I'm assuming on that TV that it's not being delivered via UPS or Fedex correct? I saw on Vaans that it's curbside delivery only. Does this mean you don't get a chance to inspect it first? I'd look into that. Regards!

Hey guys- I was siting here and had a quick question. I wanted to know how hard it would be to build the top portion of a LaScala to be used as a Center Channel. From the looks of my existing LS's, it doesn't seem like it would be diffucult. Am I right in thinking the LaScala tops don't need a box? If I just had the two horns sitting on a table, wouldn't it produce the same effect as being in a box? (I'm assuming this since the tops of the LS's aren't sealed. If th is is the case, couldn't I just build a box deep enough to hold the horns, leave the back open for access to the crossover, and then build an AA crossover, buy the horns, and that's all she wrote? If it's this easy, would the sound produced be good enough for a Center? I know I would be missing the bottom portion of the LS, but for a Center, shouldn't the top half be good enough? Let me know your thougths

Instead of getting the 254, why don't you get a cheaper model and buy a nice 2ch amp? I'd go that way. When I say cheaper, I mean older. There are some great buys on Flagship HK receivers that are just a few years old. The AVR745 can be had for around 500 bucks and it will DEFINATELY power your entiere system. Or you can get a 7300, or you could even get a 347 for cheaper than a 254 and it 's a better unit. Good luck.

I had an R-35 setup (RF-35's, RC-35, and RS-62's). The RC-35, for me, sounded like crap. I sold it and bought an RC-62 and for me, it was a huge improvement. They are essentially the same speaker, but it just sounded better and blended better with the RF-35's. Now, I'm all heritage, and I also say go all the way or go home. You will end up going the same route as I did - being perfectly happy with your RF-35's, then you will one day hear some LaScalas - then you will figure out how cheap they really are used, then you will have huge speakers in your living room. May as well go ahead and buy them now - it happens to the best of us.
