  1. Do not put any Dynamat on the INSIDE of the horn.
  2. I got the Gusdorf GUS-10614 from Circuit City. It was on clearance for $99. I don't know if they still have them available, but it is a pretty decent rack. It uses 3" steel posts and MDF shelves. I ended up painting the posts black to better suit my tastes. It will hold larger piececs of equipment quite well. I also like it because it has no side, front, or rear panels which allows heat to escape. It's pretty heavy duty. It was pretty much exactly what I was looking for. I'm quite pleased with it, especially considering the price.
  3. My suggestion is to get the cheapest reliable DVD player you can find (i.e. Panasonic, Sony, Thoshiba, etc.). You can get these for as low as $100-120. If you've got HD, progressive scan players are just a bit more. I splurged a little and got one that also played SACD (Sony). Paid $149 on clearance at Best Buy. Sound and picture are excellent. I see no reason to spend hundreds on a DVD player when you can get so much for so little. If formats/standards change, you haven't invested much and can get something else later without having made a big investment.
  4. I agree, very nice looking Cornwalls! Did you finish them yourself? If so, how did you do it? I assume that is a decorator cabinet with Birch veneer.
  5. Keep checking. They show up often. Dallas is a great place to find them too.

  7. Thanks for the suggestions! I am going to be in need of a tube preamp eventually. Can you really get the Cary's in the $400-600 range?
  8. TTK: The real question may be "who raised you"? You ask for people's OPINION on what they think you should do, then you chastise them for not answering the way you wanted. Shame on you. At the risk of being chastised, I will give you my OPINION: I don't think this case warrants negative feedback, because in the end, the seller was honest and you did not get burned. Sure, you lost out on getting what you wanted, and you lost out on your time and effort, but at least you did not lose any money in this deal. Worse things can happen on eBay. I think leaving neutral feedback would be acceptable provided you explain that the unit was damaged in shipping (due to less than optimum packaging) but that the seller did refund your money.
  9. I recently purchased an inexpensive DVD player. I happened to find a Sony that also played SACD. I decided to go ahead and try SACD out since it didn't cost very much, even though I purchased it for the DVD function (my first ever DVD player!). I got it for $150 on clearance from Best Buy.
  10. Yup, it's easier to get a good deal on Klipsch from someone that doesn't like Klipsch, vs. someone who can't bear to let them go. I've gotten my great deals on used Klipsch from someone who was upgrading to something "better". Go get those Khorns if they are in good shape and the price is right (sounds like they may be willing to work out a deal)!
  11. La Scala vs. Cornwall: I have owned both speakers (and still own La Scalas). The simplest difference between the two is as has already been mentioned -- the Cornwalls go deeper in bass and the La Scalas have tighter, more dynamice bass. When I owned Cornwalls, I always wanted La Scalas as I liked them better when I first heard them. After acquiring the La Scalas and being able to listen to them in detail, I had a better feel for how they compared to the Cornwalls. I wasn't able to compare the two side-by-side. As a stand-alone system, for two-channel music, I think I would prefer the Cornwalls as I did notice a lack of deep bass with the La Scalas. While I think both are very good speakers, I would probably be able to live with the Cornwalls more than the La Scalas. Now, if you can add a good sub, then maybe the La Scalas could be a better option. Just heed the advice of TBrennan, you need a good sub for music. If you're only doing this for movies, then I don't believe the sub is a critical. The RSW-15 is a very good sounding sub, but I don't know that it can match the La Scalas dynamics on it's own.
  12. All magazines are the same. Isn't that something that was once written in STEREO REVIEW???
  13. Moon: don't think he meant that they are dead. He lost them in that game of cards -- somebody else has them now!
  14. Sorry to hear that Jim. Don't let it get you down, just go out there and find something else. I was in the same boat for a while. The telecom startup I was at went down. Took a long time to finally find something, but even that didn't last long, I was out again in October. Did some temp work just to help pay the bills. I did get lucky in finding a contract job though, but unfortunately it means I'm going to have to move. I start in January. Frzninvt: GD must be doing a lot of hiring, that's where I'll be working.
  15. Nothing wrong with paper woofers. That's exactly what you'll find on all Khorns, Belles, Cornwalls, Heresy's, La Scalas, Chorus, Forte, etc. The 1" midrange is a horn driver, not a "woofer". Wharfedale is actually a Brittish company (at least I think it still is). They have been around for a while. The sensitivity is low because they also employ direct radiators. The horns need to be toned down so that the direct radiators can keep up with them -- not unlike what is done on Cornwalls and Heresy's (it's the reason these speakers don't have the sensitivity of the fully horn-loaded speakers such as the Khorn, Belle, and La Scala). Actually, it's kinda neat to see Wharfedale using horns.
  16. You need to improve the structural rigidity of the cabinet. Dynamat or acoustic stuffing will not do this. Add bracing or use thicker cabinet panels (or both).
  17. The AG speakers that use direct radiator subs are actually active subs - meaning, there is a built-in amplifier driving the bass drivers. So, technically, the subs really don't have that 107 dB efficiency. The gain on the built-in amps are just set to match the output of the horn drivers. I could be wrong, but I don't think there is a direct radiating woofer that has a 107 dB efficiency. Since the AG bass modules are not horn loaded, they don't exhibit the advantages of horn-loaded speakers (dynamics, clarity, output, etc.). I have heard the Unos, and while they do sound good, the bass just doesn't compare with a Khorn IMO. The reason for having horn-loaded bass is the same for having horns in general -- you get higher efficiency, lower distortion, superior dynamics, and higher output in the bass portion of the sound.
  18. Yeah James, that truly was a steal of a deal. The fact that shipping was included in the price means JBL almost literally gave these things away. They weigh 140 lbs each, so shipping from California cannot be cheap. Although I couldn't use them at the time I bought them, I could just not pass on that kind of deal. I got my Belle used. I had to drive several hundred miles for it, but I can't complain - paid a very reasonable price for it. The Belle and JBL are only used for HT. For 2-channel, I only run the Khorns (full range). Since the Belle is the only speaker I have used as a center, I can't say I've noticed getting more bass as I have nothing to compare it to. However, I would say that adding a Belle to Khorn mains really isn't going to add much noticeable bass since the Khorns do go quite a bit lower and you probably don't get much bass sent to the center channel anyway. I currently have the Khorns set to large and everything else set to small.
  19. Don't forget to check your local newspaper classifieds also. Depending on where you live, you might be able to find some there as well. If you can purchase locally, you won't have to worry about shipping charges and you can see/hear the stuff before giving out any money. I found my Khorns that way. Also, you might want to try: www.audiogon.com (as mentioned) www.audioshopper.com www.audioreview.com There are several other sites you can also check that others may chip in and tell you about.
  20. James, I was one of the lucky few that heeded the advice from Tom Brennan and bought those JBL bass bins from the tent sale. I got the 4638. I have just recently gottten it connected in my 5.1 HT setup which consists of Khorn mains, Belle Center, and Heresy surrounds. I have just one of these in use, and I must say I am very impressed. As DND mentioned, the sound is VERY clean and fast. It sounds much better than most subs I have heard. In fact, I don't like most subs because they usually sound "muddy/flabby" to me. I briefly heard the RSW-15 at Ultimate Electronics, and the JBL seemed to have a similar sound (yeah, I liked the RSW-15 too). However, the JBL uses two 15-inchers, so the output should probably be higher. As far as the low end extension goes, these things do go pretty low, at least for my tastes. I was initially a bit concerned about that aspect, but not any more. There are plenty of things vibrating in the house when it's playing. Right now, my biggest concern (and I'm not joking), is getting a citation. All this for $220 new, shipped to your door with warranty was too good to be true, but in this case, it was true. Of course you still have to add an amp, but that is no big deal. I'll probably post a bit more information later once I've had a chance to audition it more. Thus far, I'm very very happy.
  21. Jobman: That is the same way I have my system connected - got the preouts on the AV receiver connected to my 2-channel preamp. I don't know if you have to change any settings on your Sony to send output to the preouts or not. Not to state the obvious, but don't forget you have to turn up the volume quite a bit on your preamp.
  22. Both the Forte I and II's are excellent speakers. If you can find some in good condition at a reasonable price, don't hesitate to buy them.
  23. HornEd: Am very sorry and sad to hear of your condition. You are right on target in describing this Forum as a great place to spend time. It is still amazing at how polite most people are, especially with the sheer number of posters. I'm not sure if there is another place like this on the internet, as vast as it is. This forum does exhibit quite a bit of class, and nobody has demonstrated more of it than you Mr. HornEd. The Klipsch forum has class because you have showed it, and the rest of us 10,000 plus members have simply followed your lead. Make no mistake that your contributions here have been much more significant than you might realize. Get well soon so you can get back to listening to your Klipsch rigs (as well as all the other more important things in your life). P.S. The Easter Bunny also wishes you well!
