  1. Nope the 404 for example will barely reach 30Hz, just like any other sub of its category. ears mentions the price, well, a Tempest can be done for the cost of the 404... ears is going insane or something
  2. Excuse me... a.... a.... ... polk??? a good subwoofer for theears?
  3. Fire Pinch Thanks for the offer. I was thinking in calibrate both subs to, say, 100Hz so both read 100dB. Then go down in 1/3 or 1/6 interval to see how each behave, right down to 16Hz. Both need to be properly calibrated and in the same place to do this fairly Oh, do not try to test your Tempest maxed out! either your house or your head will not allow it! .
  4. Congrats on your sub, welcome to the club! I agree with all what you say, but I need to add that the secret is to correctly setup your sub. Of course a Tempest can be very musical "despite" being a 15inch driver! again its all making a good sub and then setup it correctly. I would be interested in seeing some numbers comparing the output at certain frequencies against the VTF3, just for the record, as Im aware that the Tempest will give you more bass.
  5. Artto, you are correct. For example those Qsound effects disappear with a bad setup. Ah, on the "accuracy" regarding both technologies... my feeling is that I really don't care. To a point, the whole "accuracy" concept is just a myth propelled by some heads in the industry.
  6. Artto What you hear in Amused to Death and other recordings is a result of a DSP effect (called QSound) so is not a soundstage or imaging effect in the sense of normal recordings.
  7. Dean is your question if sound waves behave more or less the same on air than on water? The answer would be yes, and I'm interested also in the difraction question. I hope someone will develop a room with thousands of mics in order to "map" the precise behaviour of sound waves in a graphical way. Damn, I would love to run this and other experiments...
  8. Jim, where are you located, anywhere near to Connecticut?
  9. Problem with definitions is that what some individual will consider "bright and detailed" another one will consider "harsh and colored". I do not believe that subjective accounts are really valuable. On the other hand, Im not an "objectivist" either, I consider that actual measurements only account for a small number of the variables involved. So, in a way, I would encourage to any possible buyer to hear by himself, and read only to have an informed opinion on what he is listening. But Never to make a decision.
  10. Please correct me if Im wrong. Time alignment is rather complex, I understand more or less the theory (I think) and that some are aligned with the possition of the drivers and others with delays in the crossover section. But what I don't understand is this, a time aligned speaker is just aligned with itself, so the only way to hear the phase coherence is to listen to one as a mono source. Because when you introduce another speaker they will certainly not be at exactly the same distance from your ears in a perfect triangle, so, where does that leave time alignment?
  11. Nice thread. Im interested in a diagram of the room, is it possible for any of you to make a simple sketch? I have been thinking myself in a three speakers configuration, currently I will play bit with a Haffler system (if I remember correctly), I bought a nice old box called "quadaptor" by Dynaco which let you connect four speakers to a two channel amplifier. Of course I will not have the same effect, but I expect to feel a realistic ambience with some recordings.
  12. Depending on the location on your room the RF-3's are maybe playing those 30Hz at, say, -10dB or so. And that's still very audible. If you are listening to a nice recording there are indeed lots of 30Hz action on that piece.
  13. The review is outstanding. Sometimes I feel the press is not that interested in Klipsch speakers. Stereophile, for instance, have a lot of reviews on their site, no Klipsch speaker is available. Now, if I just could find a similar review on my Heresy's!!!
  14. I have mine with the mid horn at ear level, both are on stands and at around 15 inch from the side walls and the back wall. The best imaging for me is with the tweeters pointing directly to the wall behind my head. In any case something is true, you will enjoy your Heresy's!
  15. I know, questions similar to this one has been asked again and again, but after searching for a while on the forums I still have my question unanswered. Im a happy owner of 1980s Heresy's and have loved them since I bought them at around 1994. But someone I know offer me a pair of used (but perfect) RF3's for around 600 bucks, the price might not appear to be that good, but if you consider I live in Mexico City and that in a store I would have to pay around 800 or more to get them you will see the offer is reasonable. Now, my question regarding both is not about which is more "musical" or "accurated", I just want to know if the RF3 are remarkable superior on the imaging and soundstage departments. I will appreciate first hand experiences. Thanks!
  16. Hey, don't be sad. Sooner than you think you will have your new toys singing
  17. Deang, I'm Happy to see you are enjoying them. Regarding imaging, I guess some people have different ideas on what is exactly that, other than that I can't imagine someone thinking the Heresy's don't image. Anyway, I have mine at ears level, close to the corners but leaving about 15cm to each wall. I have choosed this location after lot of experimenting. As your room is dedicated (if I recall from a pic you posted) you don't have any problems in order to see which position works best for you. I don't know if you already have posted it but I want to read your side to side impressions on both the Heresy and the RF7's. Enjoy
  18. The Khorn doesn't image? Well, that's a new one. Does that means that Klipsch speakers can't image? Because then my Heresy are really heretics
  19. Deang, do you got bass out from your setup? If the real wall is that far I guess you will have some cancelation at your listening position. Also, is it on this room where you will be testing your Heresy? If yes, I suggest you to locate them on the corners, to try to achieve as most bass as possible.
  20. You need ceramic drivers then... you can choose, from 60,000 to 6,000 bucks ultra high end speakers... Or DIY about 250 bucks each driver
  21. Congrats on your new sub. It would be very illustrative (IMO) if you could write a detailed comparo between your KSW and your new DIY. The Tempest is undoubtedly an good driver, regarding cost/performance is an absolute winner.
  22. Overpriced is a product with less output and less extension at a higher price. And there are lots of examples of this. Going the DIY route will be cheaper, no doubt, but almost no one will take that road. So, if I were not a DIY fan, my best bet would be, without a doubt, an SVS sub. SVS are NOT overpriced. End of story.
