  1. Well I just picked up my LaScala's from Qman last night. He was sad to see them go, as anyone would be. I told him they were going to a good home and would have plenty of good company. Thanks Q. Anyway I hooked them up on the front B channels and stuck them in fromt of the Khorns for now. I was doing a test between the Khorns and the LaScalas and I noticed a big difference is the sound. The Lascala's have the type AL network and the Khorns have the AK-2 network. The Ak-2 network is a major improvment over the AL network IMO. The highs seem more detailed. The LaScala's seem to be a bit muddy compared to the Khorns. Can I do anything to the networks in the LaScala's to help open up the horns? I do not want to buy a set of ALK's, I am just wondering if changing some of the components in the existing crossover will help improve the sound. My first mod to them will probably be to re-wire the entire speakers, including the crossovers with new wire. I remember a mod about doing something like removing the screw form the inductor core and something else. Can someone please tell me what this exact mod was and tell me if it will help open these things up? Thanks agian Q. BTW I told you I was thinking of putting the black veneer on them. I changed my mind, I am going to refinish them. I will probably do the same as I did to my Heresey's which came in an unfinished birch. I stained them with a light oak stain and applied about three coats of Poly on them. EJ
  2. Is there a big difference between big and small speakers on the side? Yes there is, when you are listening in a 5 or more channel discrete format. When you are listening in Prologic, not such a big difference since you don't hear anything below 2000hz anyway, but still noticeable. Using larger speakers really makes a noticeable difference over small on any of your surround/center channels. Want proof. Listen to your cornwalls in 2 channel. Now switch them out with you bostons and sub. That's the differnce, you will lack a lot of fullnes that you get from the larger speaker due to the the larger bass driver that the sub cannot make up for. EJ
  3. Rob, VHS-HD, yeh I heard something about that awhile back but haven't checked it out yet. Give us some details on the player. Now that your picking up HDTV, did you have to install a big ole antenna. I was talking to a dish salesman yeterday and he is trying to tell me my antenna needs to be 20' in the air, multi directional, blah, blah, blah. He was trying to tell me that if I don't it get it up in the air the signals bouncing off buildings will give you ghosts. Well i wouldn't disagree with him on this for regular broadcasts but digital signal is either there and its perfect, or its not there and your watching snow. What are you using for an antenna? EJ
  4. Huhuru, I looked at the Yamaha you talked about in your post. It is a very nice player, only problem is it doesn't have SACD, which for me is a must. Fini, I am looking at the Pioneer DV-45A. Thats a sweet player and I think I am going to buy it for my system. I just wish they had a similiar model in a changer. McGoo, I am with you on the progressive scan thing. Since I got the Dish 6000 with component outs I have to watch with the side bars unless a true HDTV signal is being sent. I can use the modes on the reciever to fill(there are several), but they suck compared to the internal ones in my Hitachi. However I have to use the S video out to use the modes on the tv to convert to Widescreen and the picture quality diminishes enough that I am not happy with it. What I will prbably end up doing is using the Pioneer for true widescreen dvd's, the ones that I want to expand the screen on I will use my xbox which really is a great little dvd player when you use the component video outs. EJ
  5. Anything by RECTON is a sure winner in my book!LOL EJ
  6. Sweeet! Yep thats about how I want to hang em'. EJ
  7. Kain, Go and listen to one of the upper models. Tell us what you think. Compare to whatever and tell us what you think. If you think it is bright, switch to the processor direct mode which bypasses majority of internal circuits. This is very mellow and extremely quite IMO. I don't have any complaints with brightness but could just my listening preference, I tend to like a little more brightness so maybe thats why I like the sound of Yamaha. Either way the sound is very clean and detailed. EJ
  8. Ear, Havent played No One lives forever 2 yet, but will get it when it comes out on Xbox this holiday season. The first James of the new series was kind of a dud. It was fun but not great. The new one is supposed to be much better, more in the league of goldeneye. Did pick up a new game this weekend and played a little bit. Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon. This is a really cool game. Have you played it? Oh yeh, not a very popular forum. I know there must be alot of gamers in here. For whatever reason nobody has anything to say about gaming. I was going to say something about how unpopular this forum is, but I figured no ones listening anyway. Once agian the Ear is listening.LOL I play video games and I'm not afraid to admit it. EJ
  9. Dale, Yes, actually I do know some good welders. I am a Project Engineer for a fairly decent sized construction company so I do have lots of contacts. That is pretty much why I know I can get some custom mounts made for a reasonable price. I have been considering using tube steel for the main supports. I like the idea that your friend uses but I do not want anything on the floor, I want them suspended, with as little visible support showing as possible. I guess I just want to keep it real clean looking. I emailed Trey but no response yet. EJ
  10. Vladi, I don't have it. I mailed it to him through the Klipsch site here and it doesn't save sent stuff. Maybe Huhru will forward it to you. Huhuru, Sounds like you have decided against the RX-V1, huh. Did you demo it against the 3000 & 3200. If so what were your thoughts? EJ
  11. Thanks Doug, I will do that. I am 99% sure he will tell me the same as he told you, to use a shelf like system. That however is what I do not want to do but will if there is no other way. EJ
  12. OK, this may sound a little crazy but here is what I am thinking I am going to do in my new HT room when it is finsihed. I want to mount my Hereseys, Cornwalls and Lscala's(Soon to be picked up from Q-Man) on the walls. I am not exactly sure how I am going to do it though. I am going to have to have custom brackets made. Here's the configurations: LaScala's will be centers, Cornwalls will be rears, and Heresey's will be front Effects, all of which will be hung from the ceiling. Is this feasable? Can it be done without any mods to the speaker cabinets? The hereseys should be no problem, it's the LaScala's and the Cornwalls that are going to require some serious heavy duty mounts. I am kind of thinking if I make a frame that bolts to the backs using the existing screw holes that used to attach the backs on them. I am thinking if I add extra screws and longer ones, the frame of the moounting attachement will go all the way around the back attachements on the speakers. I am not sure if I will need to put something under the speaker to help with the weight. Note also that these things will not be mounted directly to the wall, they will hang from the ceiling and pitch down to the listening position. I am also ging to turn the cornwalls on their side. It's a little crazy but I think it will be totally sweet, not to metion it gets everything off the floor, except for the Khorns of course. I will mount the Heresey's directly above the khorns. I really wnat the setup to look good, no goddy brackets, I wnat to keep everything mostly out of sight except for the drops from the ceiling, and I would prefer not to have anything under the speakers for support. Well what do you think? Anybody ever done anything like this? Ideas and comments please. EJ

That scene was on my system was on my mind all day long. As a matter of fact, when it was movie time tonight, I put in the DVD and went straight to them only to be a little dissapointed. I mean they sounded the same, they just weren't as loud. They had to have turned the sound affect down for the DVD, I distinctly remember them being much more intense in the theater. ---------------- Moon, What do you have your D-Range set on on your amp? For amximum effect and minimal compression you need to set it at max. Normally the receivers are set to Std(Standard) which is not as dramatic as Max. You wouldn't believe the difference setting this to Max will make. I had just set mine to Max acouple of weeks ago when I watched Windtalkers. Had voume set moderately high for vocals and then all of a suddden shooting started. Scared the Sh!t outta me, awesome. D-Range+MAx=The Bomb. EJ

The actual vehicle is not important.LOL Sidebar: I could have barely bought a pair of ALK's with what I sold my last vehicle for.LOL Luckily I now ride in style. A company vehicle with a gas card. EJ
  16. BBB, THis may be a stupid answer but I had problems about a couple years ago with my DD. I wasn't getting dropouts but rather I was getting a delay in the sound. The sound didn't match the picture and the sound was lagging behind. This only happened in 5.1 and not in DD2.0 or PCM. It also only happened with my cable/sat reciever. My first instinct was to go and hit the receiver, I would give it a good swat. I would lose signal for a second but then it would come back, OK. I had the Sony receiver checked out and the tech's ran it for like 48 hours and no problems. It ended up being a bad optical cable. I had one of those crappy Rectcon cables. After I replaced that I had no problems. Also wanted to note that you don't want to get those optical cables all looped up or crimped as it seems to affect the transfer. Itry to keep them in as straight as a line as possible. Just thought I'd share, even though it doesn't sound like this is the problem your having. EJ
  17. I carried newbie/cool newbie for about a year and a half. I am no longer cool, but I still have a life, and do not need therapy. Just a little CRAZY! LOL EJ
  18. TB, What model was that? Is that one of their new micro mini satelites highly magnified?LOL I believe that model has 25 4" woofers inside the bass cab with a piezo horn on top. EJ
  19. They will both drop out the same depending on weather conditions. I like Dish as that is what I have. I think it's a better value. By next year Dish Net will have all of the sports packages ie NFL ticket etc. that Direct has. As of now Dish has more regular programming but that will also change as they are all required to offer the same programming packages by court order. I also like the menu's on Dish Net better. As far as the qulaity of receiver go...I have no idea but I see alot of guys that do HD have the Dish Net on this BB as do I. Unless your a big sports fan and can't wait until next season to get NFL ticket etc. the Dish network is a better value IMO of course. EJ
  20. I've had my Heresey's for 12 years. I love KLIPSCH!!!! EJ

  22. If you like the Pioneer, just buy it and stop worrying.LOL It's a great receiver. I have read nothing but good things about it. It has plenty of power, very clean, all the bells and whistles, etc. I seriously looked at it before I bought the RX-V1. I like the Yamaha sound and the effects processor is the best around, very clean, plus the price was right for me. I like the Pioneer though, it would have been my second choice. I like the Dennon's but they are a little too pricey for me. The bottom line is Dennon is great, but you are paying a premium for the name and thats OK because it is a freat product. IMO the RX-Z1 is awesome but I'm not sure it's worth the price tag, which is why I went with the RX-V1 which was discounted since the release of the Z1.
  23. Just in case anyone is wondering Sound and Vision online has tested several of the named amps in a lab. The link to the main page is: http://www.soundandvisionmag.com/index.asp Click on archives then equipment reports to see the reviews It looks to me like all of the above named amps are worthy of a serious HT setup with very good specs. I would say for the most part they will all perform exceptional and as expected for flagship amps. The Dennon was very powerful in their test. EJ
  24. He is not my installer! LOL Just a guy that was installing my Dish for free at the new house. Of course I inspected his work for quality. He wired everything with RG6, gave me a free dish for my HD channels, and two duplexors for when I install in the new rooms. I was happy. I will expand and you can tell me if he is full of it. He said the signals that the receivers pass back and forth to the dish degrade the RG59 over time. If I remember right he said when they communicate ie pass signals back through the line out the dish the current will heat up the line causing it to ultimately fail over time. It might be possible on long cable runs. Anyway I just said Hmmm and noded. EJ
