  1. That said, Atlanta is a good team with a good coach. They're just a few players and a few plays away from being a force.
  2. Right you are, JL. Another "Whew Dat!"
  3. Hey that little Yammie is nothing to sneeze at. In some ways (the neck geometry in particular) I prefer it to a strat. Great score.
  4. I've got that one on LP. Nice vintage recording of a standout performance. I'm not a fan of those early Mercury stereo LP's (I know, lots of people 'in the know' are gaga over them) but this one gets it right.
  5. You just made the best audio purchase you have ever made. 'Grats!
  6. NO over Atlanta, but only because the ATL running back phenom is injured. Indy over Denver, yes. If MinnieSoda does what they should do, which is to rest Favre a bunch every game, Cincy will win. If the Vikes fail to rest Brett enough (I'm thinking a half of each remaining game) I fear he'll fall apart in the playoffs.. New England is pissed. Poor Carolina... It's either the Gants or Filthydelphia...anybody's guess. Those are my calls, for what little they're worth.
  7. I'll see if he'll allow an audition... If it passes muster I'll sell my CJ PV10a line stage.
  8. Local audiophile is selling his for $775. I'm mighty tempted, given its reputation, and this seems a pretty good price. The seller claims it has seen little use, has its original tubes, and is quiet as a church mouse.
  9. Heard on the radio this morning: WHEW DAT! HOW'D DEY DO DAT?
  10. It's snake oil. If the wire gague is the same, buy the cheaper. If the price is the same, buy the one you like the looks of, or the one whose handling characteristics suit you. Or flip a coin.
  11. 'Bama dominated and McElroy is finally coming into his own. Though we love to harp on Nick "Satan" over here in LSU land, he is a great, serious-minded coach. I pin a lot of this success on him. As for Texas/Nebraska, Texas played poorly and Nebraska played worse. But DANG, the Husker defense was awesome!
  12. You'll kick yourself for missing such a good deal. You can do better in vinyl, but it will cost you wayyyy more. That gives you that 95% for a song.
  13. My thoughts exactly. 101db peaks will not damage hearing, though continuous output at that level surely will. But even short, repeated peaks at 115-120db will do lasting damage. There is no going back. Ever.
  14. We had a neighbor with an Amphicar. Coolest thing on wheels, land or sea. I did penance with a 1960 Austin Healey 3000, featuring electricals by Lucas-Prince of Darkness and tranny by Morris, backroad lorrie gear-cruncher. That non-synchro 1st was a real treat. Then karma bit me with a Fiat Brava. How did Renault LeCar NOT make the list?
  15. A key stat, heard during the broadcast: The Saints lead the league in passing yards YET none of their receivers is even in the top 30. That's remarkable!
  16. The MNF crew went just a bit over the top in their accolades. The Saints were in top form last night but let's not forget the mid-season struggles and come-from-behind wins. None of the rest will be easy. IF they stay focused and the injury bug doesn't bite they could run the table. Or not.
  17. Beat-down dutifully administered. NEXT, please!
  18. We went non-traditional this year and made it what locals might call an Eye-Tal-Yun feast. Cheese manicotti, stuffed shells, dago green beans, garlic bread, salad and other edibles and potables. It was great but, dang, lots more work than my bbq turkey. Guest list included the 4 of us, my sis, a French grad student from LSU, a Jamaican couple from church and two of my son's friends from LSU. A fine day. TV remained off, Klipschorns remained ON.
  19. I think if you get much wider than 18' without a center speaker the imaging will develop a hole in the center. At least I think 18' is the distance I remember quoted and it seems to square with my experience. Once I had them at about 25'. Too wide without a center channel. Right now they're at 18' and they work most of the time, depending on the recording. If something is off, the illusion will tend collapse a bit. The image is more forgiving when they're a bit closer. YMMV, of course. Can't wait to hear your V-tracked setup!
  20. History worth reading! I'll look forward to it.
  21. I met J. Reilley Lewis quite by accident during my one and only stay in DC. We were in the old town across the river (sorry the name escapes me) and wandered into a little bakery cafe to get some lunch. The place had only three tables so we asked this gentleman if we could join him. It was Lewis, and we had a wonderful lunch full of great conversation. At the end I felt like I was saying goobye to an old friend. How cool is that. I'm a big fan of choral music. Musicologists usually put St. Matthews Passion at or near the top of of Bach's output...or anybody's output for that matter. I wish I could go.
  22. Nothing beats a BBQ turkey for taste, ease and speed. It has the added benefit, like smoking, of leaving your ovenopen for other food. First, make a saute mix of a pound of andoille sausage, a large onion, bell pepper, garlic (about 6 cloves) and fresh parsley, all of it chopped fine. Saute the mix in olive oil and/or butter. Divide the turkey in half. Make deep cuts in the breast and thighs of each half. Stuff the cuts with the saute mix. Force more of the saute mix under the skin. Reserve the remainder of the saute mix. Now, wrap each half separately in 3 layers of heavy duty aluminum foil. Place bone side down on a hot BBQ grill for 1 hour. Now, take the remaining saute mix and combine with a small can of frozen limeade concentrate and a bottle of your favorite BBQ sauce. I didn't stutter about the limeade. Caveat: Do not use KC Masterpiece or similar dark, sticky, molasses-based BBQ sauce. It clashes badly with turkey. Use a medium brown sauce like Stubbs or, preferably, Tony Chachere's. At the end of 1 hour, turn over the turkey halves. Open the foil enough to pour in some BBQ sauce/limeade, saute mix into each half. Cook for another half hour. The resulting turkey will need no carving. It will fall off the bone in a heap. Your guests will fall on the stuff and destroy it.
  23. Gilbert, where in Africa have you been? Obviously sub-Saharan. I've been about 10 times, always in East Africa. Mostly Tanzania plus trips to Uganda and Kenya. I saw more hippos than I could count when passing through the enormous Selous game preserve by train. It is, I believe, the largest game preserve in the world. It seemed like every pond, little or big, was bobbing with hippos.
  24. How about if you're a soft-core tube fan??
