  1. I really don't see the point to analog recordings that were remixed into two channel "HD" stereo. I put HD in quotes because we all know that an analogue tape deck has a crappy S/N ratio compared to a real 96kHz digital recording. The dynamics of these digital recordings can be incredible when you find one that was originally mastered in 96kHz/24bit such as the AIX records stuff. For these old recordings, I see the only value being the additional tracks from the master can be remixed into an immersive multi-channel mix.
  2. Don't forget about all channel stereo modes that most AVR's have. It seems having surrounds that more closely match the mains may benefit such modes. Ever since I swapped my RS-62's out for La Scala II's, then swapped out those for P17b's, I've grown to like the direct sound over what I heard with the RS-62's. I also keep all my mid-ranges aimed to ear height, which is also counter to the original THX recommendations, but sounds very good to me for multi-channel music. Surrounds never get exactly what is sent to the mains. That is why companies can get away with smaller surrounds.
  3. There's a professional standalone Audyssey kit you could add, but it's cheaper to pick up a used preamp. The Marantz AV8801 is dirt cheap now (below half price) on ebay since it doesn't have HDMI 2.0 and Dolby Atmos. Then you can purchase the Audyssey pro kit and license if you want. Only preamps and AVRs that are "Audyssey pro compatible" work with the pro kit. Otherwise, you have to use the small microphone and are restricted on what you can do with Audyssey. Maybe start reading here: http://www.avsforum.com/forum/90-receivers-amps-processors/1346723-audyssey-pro-installer-kit-thread-faq-post-1-a.html etc6849 - can you go into some detail about this and what is does? Is this room correction that I can add to an older pre-amp that lacks this technology? I'd love keep my old pre-amp if I can add Audyssey to it. I'll do some reading on the site, but I know very little about audyssey. This is great advice, thank you.
  4. The traps came today, but the monster bass traps are damaged, so I'm going to wait on re-calibrating until GIK let's me know what they want to do. Luckily, the soffit bass traps came in great condition (they are ~35-40lbs each), and have noticeably improved my bass at very low frequencies. These things are very rugged, but cost more than the monster bass traps (and aren't as pretty). I'm thinking about four more so I have eight in total. This seems ideal because when I move, I'd like to stack two in each corner (can't do that now due to my sloped ceiling). I haven't measured anything yet, but hopefully will tomorrow.
  5. I'd probably say go with some room treatments like the GIK soffit bass traps: http://www.gikacoustics.com/product/gik-acoustics-soffit-bass-trap/ Maybe 8 total and of these for the first reflection points. I'm not sure why anyone would spend that kind of money on equipment and not spend $2-3k on treating the room. I suspect a lot of high-end systems are like that though.
  6. Love the mainstays recliner idea... I'm going to assume thought that Walmart's furniture will last as long as the Big Lot's stuff I bought after college (which wasn't long).
  7. I don't think so. I can easily hear the difference between the reference stuff I've had (even my wife can). The three way design has a much better sounding mid-range. Everything just sounds more real through these speakers compared to the RF-83's I've had in the same room on the same equipment. The LS II's have a great mid-range too, but the Palladium mid-range has more detail and just sounds more real than those too. I still love the La Scala sound though. I am curious about going active to properly time align my P39f's drivers, but I am highly satisfied with my used P39f's as is. I can't say they are worth the retail price, but they very well could be to a rich person (of which I'm not). DISCLAIMER: I've only lived with the RF-83 and RC-64 so I can't directly compare the Palladium's to the RF-7ii. I also believe in going active over using an improved crossover (there are technical reasons to support my viewpoint too), but I don't want to start a war as I know this is a hot topic.
  8. Here's a picture I found online. Forgot where it's from... I think it's of the P-39f crossover based on scaling of the guys hand, but I'm not sure though.
  9. On the west coast for sure. Not out where I live. There are very few into home theater and home automation near me.
  10. I got screwed on ebay before after a buyer dropped a $500 AVR. I still sell smaller stuff there sometimes.
  11. Nice. I assume they have the magnetic grill too? Do you have the original box? I run two of the black oak models with sledge amps in my cramped theater. I'd be all over this if I was local. Eventually I either want to go with four ultra's or multiple 18's. If you still have it after a while and at that point would consider shipping, please PM me.
  12. I'm not close, but I'll give you a bump! Is it the newer style with the 1000 watt sledge amp?
  13. Please add a smiley face in the future so I know you are kidding You'd be surprised at a few of the Audiogon offers. Some Italian guy offered $2000 shipped to Italy!?! Another offered $1200 picked up, but said he wasn't low balling me.
  14. The price was origanally $2500. $2200 is a great price, and eventually someone closer will buy them. Please rest assured if it comes to selling them that cheap, I'm going to keep them!
  15. I've lowered the price on audiogon, craigslist and the forums. These would make someone a great deal. This new lower price would cover someone's gas and time if they want to come get them ($300 savings).
  16. I think the correct model is rt-10d?
  17. New bass traps are coming, I ordered them yesterday! I bought four of these monsters: http://www.gikacoustics.com/product/gik-acoustics-soffit-bass-trap/ And two of these to play with: http://www.gikacoustics.com/product/gik-acoustics-monster-bass-trap-flexrange-technology/
  18. I totally understand treating a room after trying it myself (after hearing ChrisA's system and talking to him). Basic 4" foam made such a difference for me that I've ordered 4 48" soffit bass traps today.
  19. Wait, are you guys saying that a CD can't adequately (with 100% accuracy) produce frequencies up to 22kHz? If so, what are the technical reasons for this? Is it due to imperfect filters in the real world? I wholeheartedly trust math and nyquist's sampling theorum. I know I only have book knowledge though and have never designed anything.
  20. What? No one's mentioned Howard the Duck on blu-ray? I had to order this thing from Amazon.dk (Germany): http://www.amazon.co.uk/Howard-Duck-Lea-Thompson/dp/B00B4DAQUQ/ Then I had to have specialized software to rip it and change the iso image to region free. Damn you George Lucas. Why do you hate Howard so much?!?
  21. How big is your screen? It's absolutely worth it if your screen/TV is large. If it's 35" or smaller and you set some distance away, don't worry about it for video quality reasons... I do love blu-ray audio though, and there's a lot of music blu-rays available. The problem is I never bought a DVD, so I have nothing to compare it to! If you like audio too, the some of the multi-channel concert videos are neat.
  22. I finally secured these stands to the floor: Finally, I can sleep at night!
  23. I figured that out after reading some more
