  1. here's my obligatory "use bare magnet wire" post
  2. Absolutely, the holidays play a role. My bad amp delivered in Hope on the 22nd. Called on Monday to check status and it was still on the dock. I'm trying hard not to be "that guy" ..but dammit, i wanna hear my sub
  3. I think the 1st receiver in the chain would be the DAC. To clarify, you're talking about the amp pre-outs and not a line level out such as the tape in/out, correct? I had tried to use that channel as an output for my headphone amp so that I could continue using my ps3 over hdmi as the source. Turns out, standards dictate that the digital signal be separate from the analog line level. I ended up running the s-cart connector from the ps3 straight to the headphone amp and utilizing the multi-out in ps3 setup.
  4. growing up, i had wet dreams about the kind of gear i own now (and i do OWN it ..no hobby debt here). so in the sense of blissful ignorance, my system is most certainly hi-fi. and in another decade or two i hope to look back and scoff. or maybe not... either way i love my music experience as it stands now.

  6. For the L-C-R speakers ..timbre matching is VERY important in order to get accurately blended sound. If you've decided on the RC-52 for your center, then you will want to go with the RF-52's as your mains. There are inherent differences between the synergy (F-1) and reference (RF-52) lines, though I'm not sure what they all are. The surrounds are less important from a matching perspective and you could very easily get away with using the F-1's in this role. do you have a sub? if not, i would strongly suggest saving the cash from the F-1's and buy a used RW-12 or RW-10 (or the newer RW-12d/RW-10d variants). Ultimately it boils down to what sounds best to your ears. cheers, and welcome to the forum
  7. I'll happily participate in an "adopt a father in law" program if you need to offload some gear
  8. Then my advice is to forget about bi-wiring. It's a pointless exercise. that's not entirely accurate ..though the benefits do tend to be more system specific.
  9. except now he's back, sorta ..and it had nothing to do with the post count. mine is now one post higher, though
  10. how very anticlimactic .. thanks for the clarification, though! Typically, how long are parts such as grills, drivers, etc available for purchase/repair once you guys discontinue a product?
  11. SO much life and activity was crammed into 2009 for me ..Overall, it was a fantastic year with huge leaps of personal growth. Highlights include: 1yr anniversary with my lovely, a trip to puerto rico, acquiring our little english bully Benson, and whisking Carl's RF-5's away before he had time to realize that he doesn't like his Heresies nearly as much.
  12. Don't get yourself down Jake. You have a system far superior to most people I know... and I'm nearly 28 with a wife telling me no more speakers or a/v gear for a year, so it doesn't end
  13. edit: forgot you were looking to replace your surrounds.. if youve got the space, they would most certainly work as fantastic surrounds.
  14. depending on the condition, sounds like a good deal. What you going to do with them? (is this an impulse buy, or do you really have a need for them)
  15. I'm not a huge anime fan, but the Afro Samurai series is pretty cool. I've had it on blu-ray for a while now and have been re-watching (tv series & resurrection) on the new screen. Great story, soundtrack, and an ample amount of excessive violence and samurai kills (think: kill bill).
  16. $200 for me to send the amp in ..so either the rate has raised or it varies by model. either way, it's more cost efficient than buying a new sub altogether (unless you've been wanting something different and needed a reason)
  17. cool! ..i usually only hover around -20 to -10 for movie watching, for the exact reasons you mentioned. glad you're a happy camper now
  18. keep in mind that you'll need to dump some cash into an amp to power it/them (which he appears to be offering at additional cost). otherwise ..sure, go for it
  19. i had the 3650's installed in-wall as my mains for a few months. they perform, but are far from impressive. the whole speaker and mounting system is integrated and secured by using a pivoted clamp tension against the dry-wall. position in the hole and turn two screws from the front and you are good to go. i upgraded to RF-5's for my mains and rather than do away with them (no room to install in-wall as rears) i bastardized my kg 3.5's to serve as cabinets. they're great as surrounds ..i've not heard the 5650 series, so can't really comment. definitely go with hdmi ...it's future as a stable and long lasting tech is still up in the air, but for now it allows you the latest and greatest of what is current, while also minimizing your cable clutter.
  20. provided nothing is damaged, it's a cheap one to make (and easy to fix). Let us know how it goes ..if nothing else, it may tide you over till you can get an external amp.
  21. are you sending the secondary amp (speaker C on my sr8001 for bi-amping) to the highs or lows?
  22. good catch Gary ..I happened to snap the shot during a point in Watchmen when Mr. Manhattan is first introduced. He's blue and the light radiates/tints everything in the scene. The TV, I assure you, has impeccable color there have been several positive comments on the room openness ... I thought this was a detriment? One of Morgan's (my wife) biggest complaints is that she can't ever escape the sound when I let the system breathe a little
  23. thanks carl. ..the digital hiss has been corrected via optical cable from ps3 to receiver. now I have a plasma hum that I hope goes away (only noticeable during silence)..
