  1. Hi, I'm thinking about starting a new project and have a few questions. This is all kind of at the extreme edge of the budget for me (and I'm planning on using some gear I already have), so I'd like to make sure I don't make a major mistake along the way. Thanks again to the people who have answered questions for me in the past, I'm really getting started this time. System - 3-way, jbl tweeter, 2" 500hz horn, dbb bass bin (may experiment with some horn-loaded midbass) 1. I'd like to be able drive the mid/high with the same amp and may change the drivers on the bass bin, so I'd really like to do a passive crossover at ~5800 and use an active at 500Hz. Is there any problem in using a 2-way active crossover into a tube for the mid/high and a ss amp to handle the bass? 2. My first idea of equipment is a Blueberry preamp into an Ashly xr1001. The two things that make me a little nervous are that the output impedance of the Blueberry is 3.5k and the input impedance of the Ashly is 20k. Most places I've read that you want this ratio to be around 20, so would the matching be made worse by trying to go from an rca to an XLR over this same interface? 3. Do I need to do some calculations on the output of the bass bin when choosing crossover settings and amps? This may be a stupid question, but if I have a small tube amp driving the mid and a large ss driving the bass - could I wind up outside the range of a crossover? 4. Would it be better to wire up two woofers in parallel or series? 5. Can someone recommend a usb microphone and software for testing? Thanks again.
  2. I like the midrange of the fortes and the bass of the cornwalls. I think if cost was no object and the footprint of a cornwall wasn't too big - I would look at something like this: http://forums.klipsch.com/forums/t/105447.aspx?PageIndex=10
  3. What's the high frequency cutoff of a horn like this? I'm not sure how to do the calculation for a dual driver?
  4. Dan, let me know (pm) if you're going to get a group together. I'm only an hour away and would love to hear both of your systems sometime.
  5. Why not something like a crites tweeter with two 8" eminence PA or delta pro drivers? (picked the driver just because the range is quoted to 5khz)
  6. Is it worth it to buy a variable speed router?
  7. What do people like best for cutting circles and curves for diy tractrix horns? I asked for a jigsaw for Christmas , and I was wondering what attachments people used or if there was something people liked better.
  8. If you already have the crites, you should think about buying Greg's 4500Mhz universals.
  9. Yes - one pair - two single bins. They have the aluminum trim and it looks like a heavy duty black paint over the plywood (maybe that's the fiberglass?). They are fairly heavily used, so maybe I'll get back in touch with dtel and look at building a pair.
  10. I get a little confused on mcm vs mwm, but it appears to be a single high 15" (cheaper jbl driver) mwm bin. How much should these be worth?
  11. The forte ii's are definitely better for music (I have kg5.5s). If your budget is tight - kg4.2s might be better paired with a sub for movies.
  12. There was a 5.1 setup on craigslist recently for $1150 with klf-20's as mains. I like those, the klf-30s and kg5.5s for LR in the price range you're talking about.
  13. +1 on the bill fitzmaurice stuff. I'll probably start a tuba sometime this winter.
  14. I did a tweeter (titanium diaghram) and a crossover upgrade on a pair of Forte ii's (early 90s). The tweeter was a definite improvement, but the midrange also had a benefit. This was most noticeable in some mid-range percussion. It went from some sort of "wonk" sound to being able to tell that it was some sort of wood/rubber mallet-head thing. Very technical - yes I know, but there was a noticeable difference in the mid-range by replacing the caps. Volume didn't really matter in this case.
  15. Girlfriend thinks it's a crazy hobby, but she doesn't mind the science project look of some of the horn designs. I found a couple of older discussions on the La Scala bins about expansion and then a constant area following the 90 degree bend and then expansion again? Maybe another question would be - does anyone notice Belles as having less midbass distortion than a la scala? I've heard mwm's and la scalas, and was wondering about other options in between before starting to build something.
  16. I might be interested in a speaker wire with spades on both sides.
  17. I think I may have read every diy project thread from jwc's bass horn to the bass of the earth action novel and feel like I should be making some sawdust of my own. I currently have a pair of La Scala's with a sw-15, so I'm looking for a possible upgrade and something that I can find plans to build. Some of the klipsch options are - mwm, jubilee, khorn (these are probably more complicated than I want to attempt at this point), cornscala dbb, cornscala others? tractrix bass horn, volvotreter's conical bass horn, evm tl-4050, tl-5050, others off of diy sites? I'd like it to cross at 500Hz and go as low as possible, but trading off a sub vs a smaller footprint is an option. Thanks
  18. Wrinkles - is this your 402 and 5050? Have you answered your own question? I've been thinking about trying to build a pair of these...
  19. I have a pair of Forte II's that I did the crites upgrade on. I didn't notice more bass, but I did notice an increase in impact and clarity. In general I've read that this is because of the caps. You could search through the old posts, but I seem to remember one where crites said that he hadn't seen an inductor go bad? I wonder if you're getting more bass out of the port because the woofers are covering a larger frequency range? Just a guess...
  20. What were your final box dimensions?
  21. Let me know if you need a value off of these. I'm the one that bought them from you.
  22. I found this searching for it a while ago and bookmarked it... http://forums.klipsch.com/forums/storage/6/720281/Alk_4500.gif
  23. What's the depth of the horn + driver? Thanks aj
  24. I'm probably missing something here, but why wouldn't a single woofer design work? Would it not be balanced with the midrange?
  25. How would you amp/crossover them? As a starter project I was thinking about getting one of the sub amps from parts express with the built in crossover?
