  1. Hog, O.k. I'l start off with a list of tools. * 45 watt soldering iron with extra tips(I used a pencil type from Radio Shack) * at least one roll of solder, maybe two. * a Volt/Ohm meter to test continuity after the solder is made. * Wire cutters- Not too big, one that looks nice, and one with a little path ring around the middle. (Sorry, Monty Python humor) * A #2 Philips screwdriver. * a wire stripper. * a willing friend to hold hot things. * a lot of patients * 25' to 30' of 12ga. Original Monster Cable, your thirties will probably take moore (I bought mine at Radio Shack for about .50 to .65 cents a foot but take measurements, take out the upper woofer so you can see how things are laid out inside). The next part is easy but time consuming. To get into the 30's (or 20's or 10's) just take out the plate with the posts on it where the speaker cable comes from the amp to the speaker. Mounted on the other side of it is the crossover network. Unsolder (apply heat) to each set of leads going to the speakers. As your soldering in the new cables mark them with tape so you know wich driver they are going to. I think the sceeme is somethng like Tweeter= "T-" "T+", Midrange="M-" "M+", Woofer="W-" "W+". The woofers connections on the board do have some markings telling which one is goes to the top woofer and which is for the bottom. I used 12ga. Original Monster Cable because it's what I had lying around the house. I think I used about 25 to 30 foot, but don't quote me on that. Be sure to leave about 8" to 10" of extra cable so you have some slack to work with when your soldering them to the drivers. You will have to thin down the bare wire to fit through the hole in the crossover board. Other people were drilling out the boards to fit the larger guage but I wanted to have the option to reverse everything if it didn't work. Be sure to also replace the 4 inch leads going from the connection posts to the network board. Reinstall the crossover and speaker either on it's back or standing upright. Take out all the drivers and solder the correct cable to each driver. BE SURE YOU CHECK FOR CORRECT POLARITY!! On the Monster Cable I used the lead that has the righting on it as "+". Be very carefull when soldering the new cable to the tweeter diaphrams, the plastic melts easily. When you solder the new cable to the drivers start with the tweeter and go down (tweeter, midrange, woofer), if you drop the cable inside the cab it's easier to get to. Thats all I can think of for now but I'm sure there will be other little tips as I think of them. ------------------ Tom KLF-20 Mahogany (Cornell Hotwired) McIntosh C33 Preamp McIntosh MVP-841 CD/DVD Rotel RB-1080 Amp Yamaha PF-800 Turntable/ Sure V15 Type V Cartridge Ortofon VMS-30 mkII Cartridge Stanton 999SS Cartridge Yamaha K-1020 Cassette dbx 1231 EQ H.H. 3. I agree with ya Ears. I'm thinkin' an MC202 would be real tasty. I've heard that the Mac amps have a smooth and sweet sound to them. I would love to see if this is in relation to the Slew Rate. The Rotel I'm using now sounds rather quick although I haven't seen numbers on the Slew for that one either. ------------------ Tom KLF-20 Mahogany (Cornell Hotwired) McIntosh C33 Preamp McIntosh MVP-841 CD/DVD Rotel RB-1080 Amp Yamaha PF-800 Turntable/ Sure V15 Type V Cartridge Ortofon VMS-30 mkII Cartridge Stanton 999SS Cartridge Yamaha K-1020 Cassette dbx 1231 EQ H.H. 4. Hey Hog!! This thread might help a little. http://216.37.9.58/ubb/Forum16/HTML/000217.html Believe me, things worked out pretty well. The more I listen I find that the cd's that have the best engineering (Steely Dan, Diana Krall etc.) still are a little bright but not like they used to be. It was lot of work, but I don't regret it a bit. 6. Gee, I remember going out and begging my Father to co-sign for a loan from the credit union to get my first unit, a Sony CDP-111s. Boy, that thing was a tank! Wow!! With the drawer open (traditional front loading) you could lift the entire unit dangeling in air and it wouldn't care. I eventually wore out the laser though. Seems it was bad idea to let the thing idle while playing other medium sources. T-man--If you like Steely Dan that much, Donald Fagen has a solo album called "Kamakiriad". 8. Calm down lil' Grasshopper. First off, to bi-wire a pair of speakers you have to look at the connections on the back of the speaker itself. If there are only two connecting posts there, then bi-wiring isn't gonna do you much good. But, if there are four posts on the back of each speaker then it's possible. At the amplifier (or reciever or integrated amp) of the chain where there are the connecting posts. From this single pair of posts (not two pair!) you connect two pair of speaker cable to these posts. Two negative ends of two cables and two positive. At the speaker end, one of the speaker cables (+ and - end on the same cable) gets connected to one set of posts on the speaker (let's say the top pair of + and -). Then the other cable connects in same fashion to the bottom pair. If your familiar with some other electrical terminology it could be called "in parallel". When you do this your bypassing part of the crossover network that is internal of the speaker. Two different cables supplying an independant set of driver(s). Monster Cable claims to have cables that are specialized for a certain frequency range, I haven't seen them yet though. ------------------ Tom KLF-20 Mahogany (Cornell Hotwired) McIntosh C33 Preamp McIntosh MVP-841 CD/DVD Rotel RB-1080 Amp Yamaha PF-800 Turntable/ Sure V15 Type V Cartridge Ortofon VMS-30 mkII Cartridge Stanton 999SS Cartridge Yamaha K-1020 Cassette dbx 1231 EQ H.H. 9. According to Straightwaire.com , the level of improvement is proportional to the difference in impedance between the high frequency driver(s) and the low frequency driver(s). For example, If the the low drivers are at, say, 8 ohms and highs are at 3 ohms, bi-wiring would have "X" amount of improvement. Then if the low drivers are, say, 6-7 ohms and the highs are at 8 ohms, the improvement would be "X" amount less noticeable. Guess I'll have to take some measurements before I take this on.
  10. I'm not gonna say that the two/three prong is a bad idea because I think it is. BUT!! If you are currently using or plan to get a surge protector/AC line conditioner type unit (Panamax, Monster etc.) then there won't be a proper ground for the surge protector to dump energy to. Just food for thought. ------------------ Tom KLF-20 Mahogany (Cornell Hotwired) McIntosh C33 Preamp McIntosh MVP-841 CD/DVD Rotel RB-1080 Amp Yamaha PF-800 Turntable/ Sure V15 Type V Cartridge Ortofon VMS-30 mkII Cartridge Stanton 999SS Cartridge Yamaha K-1020 Cassette dbx 1231 EQ H.H. 14. This may sound radical but here goes. See if you can make a tiny slit at one edge of the blister with an X-acto knife with a #11 blade. Preferable on the long edge of the blister. Then see if you can squirt (inject) good ol' Elmer's Glue in there so it will cove the whole inside of the blister. Then place something very heavy and non-flexible on top of the blister. Go ahead and wipe of the obvious excess but don't push on the blister to push all of it out. Yes, a lot of the glue is going to come back out but that's o.k. for now. Leave the heavy object (I'd say about 20lbs.)on the spot for about 3-4 hours. After that take off the object and use your fingernail to scratch the excess glue. The object HAS to be VERY flat and may not flex; remember your trying to re-conform the surface, not the other way around. 15. Tom and Ray,(oh God! The Click-n-Clack Brothers from National Public Radio? LOL) In light of various birds being hurled into canopies, engines, etc. I once heard oa story of a foriegn gov't firing chickens into some canopies of planes they had purchased. They were horrified to find the bird not only sailing through the canopy but completely through the cockpit and taking out at least a few dozen rows of headrests in a commercial airliner. The new owners contacted the makers of the canopy "glass" and described their test with great detail. The only reply that came from the manufacturer was "Don't use frozen chickens." 17. Whoa!! Jim, I'm still in your corner buddy! Next to mothballing my Carver Receiver MX-150 for seperates and Mac DVD-CD player this has been the most significant upgrade yet. I know what you mean about comments and flames from others. Whenever I see a young kid driving a Civic/Cavalier or whatever, and this car has more junk hangin' off it, painted on it, parts cut out of it; anymore I just walk away thinking A.) Just keep that thing a safe distance from me and B.) I'll never buy a used car from him/her. But I don't approach that example of trendy-ism telling him/her that they just ruined what was a realtively reliable car in the name of being fab. That's not to say that the results of our labors are now undisireable by all, but I'm sure would be if they heard it and A/B comparason. I know home audio systems are a lot different than an automobile. A home audio system doesn't have to peacfully coincide whith society heading within inches of other drivers with a lot of momentum. A car does. There is a line when we start risking others' safety by building such a thing. And you and I certainly DID NOT cross it. Here's a bit of reinforcement. This weekend, one of the many projects we did to get ready for winter, was re-arrange the livingroom furniture so we can use the fireplace. This meant putting the system on the long wall (which dosen't have a side wall on the right side). This past Spring when we did opposite move I had questionable bass at best. After this move recent move it had SPL with flying colors. Chin up. Tom This message has been edited by tblasing on 10-22-2001 at 10:28 PM

  22. Sorry to pose as if I regreted the modification, I'm not. Just with the new sound there is the search for even further fine tuning. I know, that's what this hobby is all about. The constant search for the Holy Grail of auditory bliss. Please, don't get me wrong, doing this was definitely a move in the right direction. At this minute I'm playing Lary Carlton's "Discovery" disc. I'm not looking for "Rock the House" bass. Just bass with a little a** behind it and smooth little thumps when the volume is the lower attenuation. I do admit that I don't spend much or my off hours patroning the audio salons in my area sampling other speakers and equipment. The girlfriend sometimes says I over-analyze things. In light of this lack of auditions with equipment I guess I realy don't know what "coloration" is, it seams that owning a member of the Klipsch line will never give me a clue. Definitely a good thing. As far as the EQ goes, the more I tweek this thing the closer it's getting to being flat. Again, it'll just take some time. Having been around two monster systems of the day (two older brothers) when I was, say, between 8 and 16 years old I have become somewhat complacent and arrogent in thinking "seen that, heard that" with the brute systems made available to me (well, when the brothers weren't home and if they didn't find out I played with their stuff ). For instance: BGW 202 preamp 2-Phase Linear 400's bi-amped JBL L-300 industrials with 15" Altec woofers Technics SL-1200 Stanton 681 and not even a cassette deck! I'll get off the psych couch now. 23. SS-- One could call it a fear, and others could call it an uncertainty. In either case, after I did my 20's there was a significant change in coloration (I'm still not real sure what that means). There was a LOT more bass. I didn't realize it at first because I was marveling in the amount of it without touching any controls. After doing some reading here and there I read where too much bass can counter-act midrange. I did notice that the midrange wasn't as prominent as before. A little too much. Went to the trusty EQ and the analyzer and looked to see what fequency had the high attn. in the bass area. For this system it was about 50 to 63Hz. Kicked that slider down a db or so and since last night everything seems to be as it should. It does still have that deep-reaching-down-to-the-durges bass. Only a multitude of cd's in many a veriety will tell but so far things look good. BTW! 24. Raven, Funny this EQ should come up . This is the exact model that started this whole spending spree last February!! I moved my rig from my parents' house to my girlfriend's place and found that after being dormant (the whole rig) for three years the EQ went south on me. O.K.--get another one, right? Not so easy to find one in the $150 range after all. So I decided to step up with the dbx. Everything just snowballed from there and $14,000+ later it's getting closer to being somewhat complete. Just have to get the FF/RR fixed on the tape deck, a good cleaning and aligning wouldn't hurt either. Then a new stylus for the venerable Sure V15. Gee, only about $500 to go!! Ooopps...sorry, that must have sounded insensitive with your current position. What I did for a friend of mine when times were tough when he had to sell his 86' Shelby Charger Turbo (1 of 287 in this color combo) to pay for the taxes on a recently inherited house is this. I bought the car from him and stored is at my house. When things got better I sold it back to him after I detailed it and filled up the tank.
