  1. The Type AL is a second order crossover from woofer to squawker at a nominal 400 Hz with what looks like some EQ built into the woofer section. The squawker bandpass section has a second order roll-off at about 6000 Hz. The squawker circuit includes a resistor intended to prevent ringing, but it is insufficient. The tweeter is initially a 3rd order high-pass but has additional elements that, after a small shelf steepen the response to, I'm guessing, about 30 dB/octave (5th order). The Type AL also includes the pair of zener diodes. I have schematics available. The voicing of the 2 networks are similar, but detectably different. The Type AL sounds thicker and caused low brass (French Horns, etc.) to blend into a cacophony of howls. At high levels, the Type ALs tend to screech. The Type AA has some of the screech, mostly traceable to the diodes, chopping off the highs to save the tweeter. I am no fan of the AL. I have a hotrodded pair of Type AAs, a pair of ALKs, and a stock pair of AAs. I vacillate between the hotrodded AAs and ALKs as the best. The ALKs measured quite flat in an anechoic chamber, but do not quite have the voicing I fell for 25 years ago. All 3 have the Type ALs beat in the clarity and natural sound arena. John
  2. The 5.1 system at Hope used Jubilees as L&R, a Belle for Center and K-horns for surrounds. Several Heresies were mounted along the walls, but I can't remember hearing them. John
  3. I'll take $200 for a pair of barely used Waves with cages, cords and a spare set of "matched" tubes. They will come in the original boxes with the original "manuals" (a single sheet). The spare set of tubes cost me $45. John
  4. DSI77, May I suggest a Parasound preamp and power amp. Here are web links: http://www.parasound.com/products/preamps/php850.html http://www.parasound.com/products/amplifiers/hca750a.html The pieces are small and should be high quality. I use Parasound power amps with my La Scalas and like the pairing (pas de deux?). I hope they are available in France. A McIntosh MA-6100/6200 would be a good choice, too. Pictures here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1391196989 Or a Mac Receiver: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1391678925 Have a look at this Creek: http://www.audioadvisor.com/store/productdetail.asp?sku=CR5350SE&product_name=%22Special%20Edition%22%2085-Watt%205350SE%20Integrated%20Amp%20with%20Remote Don't forget to look at NAD. They should be readily available in Europe. Many of their products are recommended. I, too, am a fan of Diana Krall. I'm afraid she is too popular, now, to come to my small city. John
  5. "I noticed on that website listed in the initial posting of this thread that this "JD8" was dumping old oil into a hole he dug in his yard. That is a blatanly illegal (a federal offense), especially since used oil is considered a hazardous waste. " Sorry, Steve, waste oil is a "special waste" and even though it is and there are strict federal rules controlling its disposal, they only apply to commercial and industrial concerns. Residential entities are specifically exempt. State laws are too numerous for me to track, but there are likely many states that prohibit residential dumping of waste oil. Tennessee is not one of them. John
  6. Alright! I went through the thread again and the current tally (if I did my sums right) is 15 for Indy, 2 eithers and 8 for Hope. We're getting close to Critical Mass here folks! If you missed the first trip, you will always regret it. I will never forget. Don't miss this one! We'll do something similar to the last on. Meet for a Social on the evening of the first night to match faces to names. Do a sort of tour and "Plant Trip" the next day (which I'd assume would be a Friday) and Saturday/Saturday Evening see Indy and it's nightlife. Family members and spouses are welcome, but only one came last time. Maybe Indy will be more appealing than Hope for the spousal units. We need the Indy residents on the BBS to watch the events calendars and help us pick a weekend with a good show, or 2 to see. Say Shannon Curfman, Susan Tedeschi, or Double Trouble and Anybody. John
  7. Your brother the racer should be telling you what to get. My mountain bike is a Univega. The parts are fair and the cost was right. Without the "name", I don't think it will be much of a target for theft. You can but a Univega with discs, Al frame, Fox rear shock and XTR if you want it. If you're still at risk, don't buy a "Name", buy a good bike, instead. I favor Suck Creek, myself. http://www.suckcreek.com/bikes/custom_bikes.htm John
  8. If I counted correctly, i get 6 for Indy and 4 for hope, plus one "either". If you haven't voted, please jump in here and vote on the city in which you'd like to have the "convention". John
  9. One thing I'd really like to do is see a live band or two. I heard a group this weekend from the Indy area called Tribute. They were *really* good. John
  10. Those are early T-35/K-77s. They may be 16 ohm, but if they are, the diaphragms can be changed by an experienced tech to make them 8 ohms. Experience is necessary because if the top plate is moved, the magnet dies. It would be expensive to remagnetize it. John
  11. Everyone, I have been in contact with my favorite crystal ball. Gil has hit it on the head. Klipsch IS waiting to see which way the snowball rolls and it IS up to us to start it. There will be many things to see in Indy and as always, due to safety concerns, the factory tour makes them nervous. The Klipsch Fans Tour went after hours, by the graces of several employees that stayed late on a Friday evening. It has been said that thee are some goodies almost ready to be shown, so "A Visit To The Klipsch Kingdom" this spring could be rewarding indeed. I have cast my vote, everyone else needs to cast their's as well. We need to be enthusiastic enough to get the attention of upper management, as well. John
  12. Justin, College was a long time ago. I knew a guy that had a pair of Heresies and all tube McIntosh gear, in the dorm. I had a Kenwood integrated amp and a pair of Marantz speakers larger than Heresies. I did not have time to use mine except on weekends. I always had the best luck with them on tall stands and covered with a towel. Ratty cabinets would be another good idea. John
  13. You can succesfully build a home theater with La Scalas. I use 4. My center is a Klipsch KLF-C7. A somewhat similar center now is the RC-7. I use 2 VMPS Larger Subs driven with about 400 watts each. http://www.vmpsaudio.com/sub1.htm The newest Larger Sub is pictured on the right. You will need all of the subwoofer you can afford to keep pace with La Scalas and maintain low distortion. The Klipsch RSW-15 can do it, others can, too. Look at SVS subs on the web. C$700 is a GREAT price. John
  14. We need more information to tell if briging is safe for the amp. The final word on that is the manufacturer. The way it's done is to make/use a Y-adapter and reverse the polarity of one channel (+ to - and - to + on one channel). Plug your adapter into the normal inputs of the amp and connect the speaker leads to the + terminals only for each channel. There has to be some internal design features to allow this without damage. I *think* a common ground for the speaker terminals and chassis is one requirement. Large heat sinks are another one. The briged amp behaves like it is driving 1/2 the impedance it actually sees, so your power increases accordingly. Caution: experiment at your own risk. John
  15. They're gonna be pretty....... John
  16. There's something wrong with the serial numbers you listed. They don't seem to match the normal patterns. Look at the third character and see if it is not really a letter. The letter indicates build year. The LSBB means La Scala, Birch, Black. They should be black lacquer and not flat black. Thare is one meaningful parts change that would be an upgrade. You can change the crossover network to the Type AL-3, or substitute Al Klappenberger's high quality networks. The drivers have had a few changes over the years and while some of us prefer one driver or an other over the rest, there are no startling improvements between them. http://www.alkeng.com/klipsch.html Other changes should address audible defects you can hear. For instance I could hear (and feel) a ringing in the throat of the aluminum sqiawker horn and damped it out with Dynamat. Several of us have tweaked our La Scalas various ways, if you need specific advice.
  17. Things are afoot, folks! (Hint, Hint) If you want to make this happen, it's time to start voting. John
  18. The PWK horn is obviously a Klipsch. The other one, is not. It COULD be a Speaker Lab knock-off. BTW, Real K-400s are welded, but alomg the "horizontal" seam. It would appear you have a pair of KC-BR bass horns with other manufacturers' top end. Since they came from a disco, the other parts are probably replacements for failed components. John
  19. Matched timbre is matched sound. You won't get it mixing brands. It is needed so that a voice or other sound moving from left to center to right does not change tone as it moves. Theefore, you don't realize the voice changes speakers. It sounds like the orator is just walking around. John
  20. It sounds like a Rebel 4. It would be pretty rare. Alternatively, it might be some sort of early Pro Heresy. Here's what I think it is: http://www.klipsch.com/index.asp?path=/products/productdetail.asp?frame=y&id=80&line=&1 It there any stamplings on the rear of the cabinet? John
  21. First Call 1-800-klipsch and ask for Trey or Matt. Tell them your story and ask for help. Next, Look up Klipsch dealers in cities like Atlanta, Memphis, Chicago, Denver and ask them if they have older displays tto sell. Finally, search ebay. Stuff shows up on ebay from time to time, but not that often. John
  22. Jaja is on the Klipsch Forums, Non! Go, Jaja, Go! One more Tour! John
  23. please go here and vote for a convention in either Hope or Indy: http://forums.klipsch.com/idealbb/view.asp?topicID=25648&sessionID={763B07E3-92E8-4F00-B36B-90D9D847E9BB}&pageNo=2&num=20
  24. Check the house wiring and make sure the neutral to the transformer on the pole is intact. It may require the services of an electrician. One symptom is high voltage to outlets on one side of the breaker box and lower voltage to outlets on the other side of the box. I had that once and it does spooky things. John
  25. Gil is right. Klipsch DOES have some things to blow it's horn about and is interested in including the "Fan Club" (watch for more about that later). We need to decide where we want to convene. Only Pro Audio R&D is done in Hope, now. The Home stuff is all in Indy. The Hope listening rooms are no longer in use. Sadly, a lot of the museum stuff has been sent to NMSU, so it is not as good as it was. However, Hope is the heart of the company's history and is it's manufacturing center. I'll Kick it off now by placing my vote for INDY. Coincidently, we had an article in the Chattanooga paper Sunday describing all of the things to do in Indy. It would be an interesting place to visit. I understand there is a pretty good live music scene, too. John
