  1. With Forte IIas mains, I used KG-4.5 speakers as surrounds to good effect; they're good sounding and not too ugly and wife can put flower pots on top.. If you must mount speakers, maybe Quartets are an option? If they have to be much smaller, i'd go for RS-52, they are brilliant surrounds and it's not big deal they're from different series; Front is different story, however; as a center i would reccoment Forte, Quartet or Academy; if none of those fit, you could try KV-3.
  2. Replace crossover network capacitors. Get higher current amp. Play them quietly. Love them. Keep them. And Welcome.
  3. Movies with fantom centre can be enjoyable but with proper center speaker it's just better. I assume your rep tried to match new and current gear to your Fortes, and his choice is not ideal but could be worse. RS-52 II do surround duty very well and it is not very crucial that it's from different series. Center, however is another matter and, as others said, you should try and match front as much as possible. KV-3 suits Fortes fairly well, while Academy is really good. Third Forte would be ideal (you could get a pair and put 1 behind you for back surround). Also, you said you had agreed to build a good theater setup - a subwoofer is a must then.
  4. I personally would not waste time in biwire or passive biamp, but if it's nagging you much, go for it and see if you can perceive any difference! Plenty of material to read about it online, if that's your thing, like http://forum.blu-ray.com/speakers/56058-bi-amping-bi-wiring-research-material.html I have recently moved into much bigger place and am also torn between those speakers at the moment, i like RF-83 bass better but RF-7 have better highs imo. I think i will go La Scalas + Sub hehe;
  5. Depends, you might need a DAC for secondary system; if you do not lust for 'leatest and greatest' you might as well keep it, despite of new tech likely being available soon; i have a bel canto preamp myself and really like the sound, mine is well older than yours though; on the other hand, bel canto dac would still fetch some decent money and you could spend it on something else like nice new albums etc;
  6. It's in the amperes, not watts for me. High current amps will help you battle those woofer dips. Those big amps sound better to me, even with sensitive speakers and at lower listening levels. Sticking with AB from Emotiva and Bryston for now, but will try out some ice from Bel Canto or Wyred or Red Dragon soon.
  7. I use it to play 192/24music from USB sticks and NAS. And occasional BluRay. It's nice. Not too excited over UI though.
  8. Tell him to get Anthem avp and stick S O N Y on.
  9. On a less condescending note, you can still biamp on a budget. Some people reported quite satisfactory results even with cheaper active crossovers like Behringer and similar. Just search for info around interwebs, and you will surely find something to suit you. Passive biamping is probably invented by cable sellers though.
  10. Woofers are quite harder to drive than tweeters or midrange and require substantially more power. Their impendance can dip quite low. To get best of both, some biamp with tubes running highs/mids and solid state - lows. Higher power (150w-200w or so) tube gear tends to be rather expensive.
  11. Just to clarify, all those HDMI test results also apply to Oppo 95 dedicated stereo analog output? Sorry if it was obvious and i, being a spas, missed it -.-
  12. I miss my Rega CD player, it would load discs practically instantly, compared to my Oppo 95. Sounded pretty sweet, too. Another one i could recommend is Meridian 508.24, what a beast of a CD player, very nice sound. It is not ignorance to like CD players and disc media so I would not worry about the naysayers. I have media server on NAS myself, but i do not have to stop liking discs because others say it's 'dead'.
  13. Babylon Sistersss.. - SHAKEIT! Decent album. I am not in though, i've got this as HR files
  14. Do you not get any hum from your tweeters when using XPA amps? i do not watch movies that much any more but i kept XPA-5 still;
  15. I am not saying your calculations are incorrect; however, they would mean that XPA-2 and 706 perform exactly the same at different (reasonable) listening levels; it did noes not appear the case; emotiva does not seem to be the kind of company that would base their sales on psychoaccoustic effect (gain mismatch, louder = better ?!) and wishful thinking (surely bigger will sound better); i would be shocked if comprehensive measurements of relevant factors would not reveal XPA series being much more suitable for Klipsch Reference line than any midrange receivers. If you are looking for encouragement to continue using receiver instead of separates, you are likely in a wrong forum hehe.. most here, even flea-watt-tube-affictionados, will agree that bass needs more, MORE M O A R!!11!! Power! Which brings us back to those woofers.. i am still a bit suspicious about that 4 ohm load; you revealed Here that Klipsch techs had told you about RF-5s dipping to 4 ohm at ~200Hz.. then what about 50Hz? Depending on slope, RF-5 also would attempt to produce sound at even lower frequencies.. just saying p.s. I think 100w-400w number is from toptenreviews or similar site, sorry, i could not be bothered to do extensive research
  16. Woah you guys still at it /o\ What we need is get data on K-1083-S or K-1083-SB woofer. From my experience, those affordable consumer drivers will not handle very wide range very well. If it is any good at 2000Hz and above (RF-5 crossover at 2500HZ), how can it possibly be efficient at 50Hz to 120Hz or so? Stephen, you could try and measure one of his woofers (does not have to be very precise, just to get a guideline). I suspect, of course, with no evidence other than my experience, that they will need MANY, MANY watts to be loud at low range and that's where alleged supperiority of beefier amps comes in. Wasn't amp power recommendation 100w-400w for RF-5? I bet not much of that power would be wasted, because as per your earlier THREAD, those woofers will dip right down. Other than measuring woofers, only constructive suggestion from me would be to order XPA-2 and take advantage of 30 day trial.
  17. I actually think that 95dB is quite good/safe estimation; however, there might be something to sensitivity of those woofers in, say, 50Hz -100Hz or so range. Horn loaded mid and high ranges must increase average speaker sensitivity quite drastically.. It's all emphyrical of course,because my google skills failed to produce Klipsch Reference speaker sensitivy graph at different frequencies -.-
  18. Only if there is some semblance of controls in place. If I listen to a speaker through amp A at an average volume of 60dB and then through amp B at an average volume of 90dB and rave about amp B's greater bass, the test is worthless. As the Stereophile article I posted says: the levels have to be very closely matched in order to have a useful comparison: 0.2dB is enough to throw things off. To get close enough, you need a voltmeter. The 5V graphs into 4 and 8 ohms of THD+N I posted for each amplifier were at 10Hz through 50,000Hz, not just 1kHz.. The frequency response graphs show razor flat response from both the Onkyo and the Emotiva to beyond the audible range. I do not rave about the amp, i've sold the bugger. And some of us do have gain controls.. Also, where does 95dB sensitivity of RF-5 at low frequencies come from? Please provide proof or this whole bickering is worthless
  19. So there IS ss break in! Anyways, what is it with ladies digging tall and narrow speakers? This sure is a tendency worthwile investigating.. Grats on good deal Iron!
  20. Fair enough. In my case - i am saying XPA is better than Onk but i have absolutely no proof whatsoever. Let's see if guys armed with proper testing equipment and enough care to use it would chip in.
  21. Yes, i was under impression that you might need seperate systems for LFE and well audible thumps, unless you go for some mad DIY project; a bit jealous here, hehe [Y]
  22. I only tried 506 and 3008 Onkyos in my system and stopped bothering with it. Evidence to me is my ears and i did not need to sit with spl meter and draw graphs to conclude that, it was bleeding obvious. Now, my ears and room effects are probably different from yours and everybody elses, but if you think that all equipment that measures perfect, will sound perfect, you're in for a nasty surprise.
  23. I wonder if it's still 'mid' bass most people experience while watching movies and are exited about. It's no secret that one fella from Oz (founder of Eminent ?) invented rotary subwoofer which lets you listen to 5Hz sound and is capable of pushing a lot of air. Only this small thing for him left to do - and that's to convince customers that they can actually hear those low-low frequencies..
