  1. When I was living in Wisc. and doing some work for the state's electric co-op assoc., there were folks putting in closed loop systems and they were working out quite well (no pun intended). I sure don't remember the specifics, but they certainly didn't cost $250k. They can either be done as wells or put in the same way as Michael's PEX for his hot water heating. Greg Roberts might be one for some valid help and answers... Bruce
  2. But you're in Bloomington, right? A loooong time ago I lived in Peoria. What do you have? Josh and I have the first AMD dual cpu boards that they had. The newer stuff rocks! You can PM me or email with the info. Bruce
  3. James, I always enjoyed listening to her songs. Sad indeed.
  4. Most speakers are designed to have a forward (toward the listener) motion on the diaphragms when there is a positive signal applied to the positive (red) input terminal of the speaker system as a whole. Different drivers are wired out of phase with other components in the same cabinet due to the slope of the crossover. Here's a quote from a Wikipedia article... "It is commonly thought that there will always be a phase difference of 180° between the outputs of a (second order) low-pass filter and a high-pass filter having the same crossover frequency. And so, in a 2-way system, the high-pass section's output is usually connected to the high frequency driver 'inverted', to correct for this phase problem. For passive systems, the tweeter is wired with opposite polarity to the woofer; for active crossovers the high-pass filter's output is inverted. In 3-way systems the mid-range driver or filter is inverted. However, this is generally only true when the speakers have a wide response overlap and the acoustic centers are physically aligned." 5. Ok, let phase it, we all want big woofers...BTW, the altecs are actually from a split 210, with nice mahogany veneer.
  6. If they are new, or otherwise boxed well, it won't be a problem. Not any worse than a warehouse, delivery truck sitting in the sun..
  7. It's really just a conversation piece. Our Physics Dept. was cleaning and threw it out, so I took it home. They had used it for demonstrations.
  8. Standing up or laying down, the driver will still be verticle. These altecs gave me the idea for standing them up. I already have the drawings for stands (sketches, anyway...).
  9. If you have them moved towards the back, are the tweeter and mid driver lined up? If they are, the time alignment will probably be the difference you are hearing. I mounted a pair of APT150s in baffles and moved them to the back of my LS, lined up with the K55. A dramatic improvement!Bruce
  10. I don't think I'll ever sell mine either. Now that I own some classics, I don't want to let them slip away during some mental disturbance. [*-)]I DO need to get some spare tubes though. Bruce
  11. I guess that wouldn't say much for the bazillion cabinets that have their drivers on an angle. So... do you rotate your woofers now? Don't worry Richard... the toes will be fine. Bruce
  12. I have the Bach Cello Concertos with Janos Starker, originally released on vinyl. There is rumble, but I am pretty sure it is the concert hall. It's like you here trucks going by on the street outside. I've been listining at night on headphones, and though there was a truck going by outside. Studios are a lot quiter now than they were in the past. Even many home studios have a lower noise floor than older commercial studios. Bruce
  13. Dave, Did you get the EL-84s for this? That is bridgable too. Will you try that with a second one or just biamp? Bruce
  14. That's ok... my late wife and I wanted to make a spoof film based on The Night Stalker. It was to have a giant asparagus stalk terrorizing a town, leaving behind a trail of hollandaise sauce. []
  15. I have an empty PC here now, which meets the minimum req., but can see I'll have to get something newer. Since I built the one I'm typing on around 2000, and have a dual cpu model built a little later... you see where this goes. A friend gave me a 2.4Ghz Dell desktop, and it will do for now. I would love to get a quad core... Bruce
  16. I am pumped! I'll have to get a new computer, but I still love it. When I got home Friday, I had a package waiting on the back porch - the newest version of Adobe's Creative Suite. The Master Collection contains: InDesign CS4 Photoshop CS4 Extended Illustrator CS4 Acrobat 9 Pro Flash CS4 Professional Dreamweaver CS4 Fireworks CS4 Contribute CS4 After Effects CS4 Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 Soundbooth CS4 Adobe OnLocation CS4 Encore CS4 Adobe Bridge CS4 Adobe Device Central CS4 Dynamic Link Version Cue CS4 Since I work on staff at an educational institution, I get a deal... a very good deal. Like under 25% good. It's going to take a while just to get everthing installed, as it comes on 5 DVDs. Can you tell I'm excited?
  17. Erik, I really like putting the faceplate on there. It really cleans up the front. The powder coat looks great, it's a nice color!
  18. I did a curcio mod on my ST-70 (about 4 years ago), but am not super happy with it. Of course, I have the Moondogs now, and it really is no contest to my ears. I have purchased a VTA-70 pcb from Roy Mottram, have most of the parts, but not finished it. Maybe a summer project, but there never seems to be enough time.Bruce
  19. Claude, The cab under the horn holds an EV 12ML. I got these from jc. My plan all along was to try standing a single MWM on end, with the mid and hi horns next to it. This will fit better in my room. It's just time and money. I need to make some new baffles for the EVs, as the speakers were only held in place with wood screws. One of the speakers came loose while driving home with them. Once I test them, if they sound ok, I'll build some new cabinets... all for appearance sake. I'm not planning on staying single, so I want the system to look decent, even if it is LARGE! [] Bruce
  20. My actual listening space is closer to that size. My two LS are on each side of the entryway. So I walk between my LS to get to the rest of the house.
  21. This is making me want to get the MWMs built to put these on top. However, I'll be paying for my gf to get over here from China this summer if all goes according to plan. The horns on top are the same as what Michael is using for part of his P.A. rig.
  22. So I could just take I-59 down to pay a visit... Cool! Barbara was born in Baton Rouge, and lived there until her father passed away when she was ten and they moved back to Chattanooga.
  23. I guess that was worth it all by itself.Just kidding really. When my older son had given me a pair of HIIs, we switched out the JBL 4311s. The wifey liked them a lot, even though the JBLS weren't slouches. Bruce
