Once I came to realize that... no matter how good you think you are, you can find someone on the street that can just blow you away with their ability and talent... I could just relax and play. My son put a pair of Bob's tweeters in his Heresies, and it prompted me to put a set in my LaScalas. A very nice improvement. Bruce

My sentiment, too, Dean. I do think the Chorus IIs rock pretty well, but the LSIIs, being fully horn loaded with the newer cabinets.... Wow!

I think for a center it would be interesting to hear Erik Forker's scaled down LS, using a 10 inch driver. He put an Edgar design 300Hz tractrix on top.

Dare I say, "Top notch"? I had trouble with the 6922 tube in my BBX that I got from JWC in the summer. Crazy oscillation and weird noises. I tried some I had in my Dynaco ST-70 mod, and they were even more erratic. Mark suggessted to somone else that they just get one of the EH 6922 tubes, so I tried one as well. For $12, I wouldn't be out much. I can now hear the hiss from the BBX, but just barely. As soon as the music starts it is gone. I guess I am saying that you can probably put up with the noise. Will the noise floor drop if you turn down the gain some on the Crown? Then up the output on the pre a bit to compensate. Bruce

Bob, Your oak veneering looks absolutely top notch, too. Very nice. My own HIIs sit here in black lacquer, and will probably remain so, but it sure is tempting. I have a built from scratch set of cabinets in the works, so I will get to try some veneering of my own on them. Bruce

Pull the crossovers out of the cabinets and doublecheck all the connections. I don't know the makeup of the Chorus xover, but you may just have a bad connection. Make sure ALL the connections are good. You will probably need to replace the capacitors in the crossovers, and they do deteriorate over time, and those are getting on in years. Bob Crites can probably help with those as well, and you can find him on this forum. Chris Munson (PopBumper) also has replacements, but maybe not for the earlier models. Bruce

People weren't making berylium diaphragms when Altec stopped making those. The 'T' as a lighter weight aluminum diaphragm, and gives a higher end freq. response. They were replaced by the 'B' diaphragms, and those drivers also had a loading cap on the back, and could handle increased power. At least that is what I have read elsewhere. I think Great Plains Audio has some info on this topic posted somewhere on their website.

The Horn Monos are great amps. What were you running in them for output tubes? I'm curious about how you like the amps, and not necessarily in comparison to the 299. Bruce

This may sound weird, but do you happen to have any solder flux? Or solder with a high rosin content? Put some flux on the joint and then heat it up again. It can do wonders. Or add new, clean solder to the joint and then remove it all.

That is so true. I have LaScalas at home, and found I like the bass better on them that on the Cornwalls I heard in Indy this past summer. The Cornies seemed 'boomy' to me. Not as tight as the LS. I would perhaps like to try some Cornwalls in my own house, for a better comparison, though.

I like the red... and give them a [Y]!!! Looks like a room you actually can live in. A lot of us don't have the space for a dedicated HT or plain 2-channel room. Congrats on the the nice outcome. Bruce

What would make it great is the wonderful company. I could eat worms and rocks with Dee and his family and be perfectly contented. Of course, I'd bring the wine! . . . . . excellent wine, shots of tequilla (we had relatives originally from south of the border there), and a lovely pear tart, and cherry pie! I am sure the wine was excellent. The wine you sent to us was superb, and Barbara enjoyed it so much. Even my semi-wine snob sister-in-law thought so. Just saying thanks really isn't enough, fini, but it's about all I can do. Maybe I can find another console for you...

I love the sound of my HIIs, with any of the amps I've used them on. Currently using an H/K 430 and they sound very smooth with plenty of bass. I had a small Velodyne sub hooked up for a while (with an 8 inch driver- small), and it actually mated very well. BUT, I don't usually have them cranked that loud. []

I kinda think the Cracker Barrel is not a bad idea. If it is cold outside, the real fireplace is an added bonus. When the food is right, it is great. By brother-in-law usually does a turkey in his smoker, but his wife brought the bird home and it was something like 26 pounds, and wouldn't fit. They took it to a place close to home that would do the smoking for them, at so much per pound. He went and picked it up today and they had it all sliced and ready to go. They did a wonderful job with it. The rest was the usual - green beans, creamed corn casserole, dressing, pickled okra, pumpkin/banana bread... I know I'm missing something... apple pie, pecan pie, ice cream Ice cold Leinenkugel's Sunset Wheat or some nice white wines (different varieties). It was ALL good.

The 1080 is listed as having .01% lower THD than the 1070 at 1 watt per channel output. .02 vs .03 I would still go with the single stereo amp, but your own ears will really have to decide. The 1070 @ $900 might be all you need. Bruce
