My son has a set of Heresies while I have a set of Heresy IIs. Both sound great to me, although I personally like the HIIs better, and think they are more balanced. Love the bass on mine, which have been powered by tubes and SS. Currently using an old H/K 430 receiver on them and the sound is good. I think the balance is probably a bit better at higher volumes, but I usually only get to 90db peaks. Just listen for a while and mess with the placement. Bruce

Very cool! We have been happy with the 8-T cabinets at the college where I work. They work great for classroom audio and presentations. Bruce

Mike, If I actually get this done, I will happily haul one to a good room somewhere and beg/borrow something to test the mod with. It would be interesting. I'll even post the results for you. I think th eq is a simple filter I can place between the pre and power amp. I'll even switch to a higher powered SS amp, so the anti-SET crowd won't complain. Might even try it both ways. I just have so many irons in the fire right now. The youngest heads off next weekend for his junior year at Valpo, I'm helping my GF get back to China and the oldest son gets married in two weeks.... I was in error... Dennis says -3 at 31Hz with a K-33, -3 at 28Hz with an EV DL15W. Who did this mod that was measured? I don't remember seeing this chart before. The higher power handling of the K-43 is (to quote Dennis) a red herring. The K-33 can deal with 150W. Most people aren't coming close to that in their living rooms/dens/ listening rooms. It is all about tradeoffs... he did say you lose some efficiency doing this mod...I still plan to do it at some point... probably with the cabinet underneath first, just to make it simple to test further. Jim, Glad to see you picked up on some more H/K gear. The 730 I got from you resides in the home of a friend and is still working great. Hope everything is settling down for you. Bruce

Wow Jeremy... don't you think you could also squeeze in a few hours on a part time job to help pay for all the audio gear, too? [8-)] There will come a day when you will wonder how you did it all. More than anything, make sure you spend time with the kids. Bruce

Hypothetical..If you could choose a plywood for a Jubilee bass bin
Marvel replied to jwc's topic in 2-Channel Home Audio
I agree with you fini, the mdf core has those fine properties. I just don't like it... a personal preference. And Gil is right too, about what is visible and needs to look nice. Bruce -
The LaScala horn mouth area is only good to about 125 Hz. To quote someone else on here, "below that is is a big woofer in a sealed box." This is why the bass mod is such a cool idea. Bruce

Erik, I am currently using DHA2 crossovers in my LS. I love how they work with my Moondogs. I think they have a higher order on the tweeter, but I really can't remember. Bruce

I think most will claim that the veneer cores have no voids... but it is still a risk. The mdf cores would not be a problem, but I wouldn't want to use it. Some of the woods are lighter in weight... the hickory/pecan was listed as being pretty heavy... and could be attractive. Seems the denser woods would be the better ones to use. Bruce -

I would think the veneer core is what you want. That catalog also has a bunch of the bendable stuff, like a couple of the guys have used for making the tractrix horns. They don't have everything at all locations- caveat emptor! Still pretty neat, and has wonderful explanations of the different grades. I would think the Atlanta location would have a lot of these, or would take delivery for you. Not too much of a drive for you. Hoped this might help. Bruce -

Check out these guys... they have a place in Atlanta. The pdf has tons of info on types of wood and plys. http://www.hardwoodgroup.com/PDFs/WOOD_SECTION.pdf I've been to the place they have in Chattanooga, but hadn't purchased anything... just was checking prices. They have mahogany and cherry, A-1 grade, with both mdf or veneer cores. Bruce -
So why couldn't you be in Atlanta or someplace closer? I would jump on that if I were close by. Bruce
-
I would be interested in what you think, using them with your single ended amps, but you may not want to switch them out to try. Bruce

For those who may have forgot......

You'll be in my prayers too, Wayne. Bruce -
I haven't stayed in touch at all. Wish I had, but our paths just led in different directions. I played acoustic guitar, dobro, lap steel, a different genre of music altogether, so we never played together. He was a bit out of my league, too. I kept my day job mostly, while he was totally committed to being a musician. Let's see, Dan Fogelberg was there in town also... a lot of guys made it, while I worked in TV news. [8-)] Bruce

Put a label on the boxes, telling them there is delicate equipment inside - please toss underhand.

Gary was in a group that used to practice at my house... sometime around 1970. Maybe just after. The Vietnam War was still going on. He was a very nice guy, and an incredible guitarist, even then. Bruce Bruce--that's cool. people laugh at me; but i think gary is the most underrated guitar player. what kind of guitar was he playing back in those days? i've seen them several times in concert, and i think he was always playing a les paul. Surprise! I wish I had a shot from the front, but I don't. He was playing a Tele. The other player in the group at this time worked out on an LP. Gary was sitting down for this outdoor gig, as he had been in a car accident and fractured his leg. There's a story there, but I sure haven't heard him repeat it publicly. Bruce

There are some usb options that might work ok for you... not too expensive at all. Perhaps Dr. Who will chime in here... Or Jay, or some of the others. I have a Tascam usb device, but I use it for recording, so it also has microphone preamps in it. You wouldn't need that much. Line in/out, maybe a digital i/o. All depends on what you want to hook it up to. Bruce

Actually, if the rafters don't line up where you need them, you can put a 2x4 or 2x6 on top of the rafters and run the chain down through holes in the ceiling.

I don't have any pics, but we used large T-hinges before. As long as the pin is strong enough. Then you have a single hole for an S hook. They can be fancy or plain, and painted so they almost disappear. Use bolts, and it the cabs are mdf, use a plate on the inside of the cab to spread the weight. You can stitch fabric tubes to cover the chains. ADDED: I think I have a great way to hang them, and for many of the designs, would be easy to do, and pretty easy to undo if you took them down... it was an epiphany of sorts... but I need to sleep right now.
