  1. My JBL 4311s, the same physical size as a pair of Heresys, would cost $3k for a pair today, if the 1972 price were adjusted for inflation, etc. But new technology usually gives us better at a lower cost. The Corns could still be a good deal. Bruce
  2. I see they say they are Class H, but I thought they primarily use a switching PS, to gain efficiency, low weight, lower heat, etc. Bruce
  3. Ear, This will cover it for you: http://www.viaducdemillaueiffage.com/
  4. Funny Tom. I find my son's Heresys a bit brighter than my HIIs. Still, I understand where you are coming from. Bruce
  5. Dennis, You answered one of my questions about a 4560 replacement. What about a 4558 replacement? I'm not up to the 17 or so you just mentioned, but need to swap out a few. Bruce
  6. If you get a good front end, have a look at the QSC DCA (Digital Cinema Amplifier) series. They are lightweight, using the PowerWave technology as in the PLX series (like Dean has). You can bridge pairs for more output. They run cool. Two and four channel models available. http://www.qscaudio.com/products/amps/dca/dca4/dca4.htm They have an 8 channel series (CX) as well, but a little less power) Bruce
  7. I've always been in on this and never considered aesthetics much. I just never have had the money. [] Bruce
  8. I have a good friend who is an attorney (actually, many friends who are attorneys) Most of them do not like lawyer jokes. I work as a computer support tech for a small private college. Before that I did support at a small guv'mint contractor. Electronics repair of commercial knitting machines. Newpaper layout/production before that. First job was as a TV news photog, using film. Changed jobs right as video news gathering was just starting in the market I was in. The whole time I have done studio recording and jingle production, demos, etc. Bruce
  9. I just used the calculator on the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis site to find the cost today of my JBLs, purchased new in 1972. They listed for $329 each. The cost today (or at least 2005) is $1531. I think I actually paid about $280 each. If that means I would have to pay over $3k for them today that really hurts. In relative terms, I make much less today than in 1972. Allan is pretty close on the $2k range. Bruce
  10. Sheesh... and I was only kidding. Did you get one with the 2 channel usb outs? I;m looking at the Mackie with full 16 channels over firewire. The ADAT is for sale, with very low hours on the heads. Bruce
  11. Love the ticket booth. You can use it to record vocals when you get the other studio gear in place. Does the Mrs. know about that?. Bruce
  12. This may be one of those Dennis questions, but I have a couple of older pieces of gear (SS preamp) that uses 4558 and 4560 dual op amps. The PS is okay. What would be a higher quality upgrade IC for these two compnents, i.e., lower noise, perhaps higher slew rate, etc.? And I have to replace a few electolytices in the signal path as well. Just one of those relaxing evening, forget your troubles kind of work. There's maybe a dozen ICs. I've already got sockets I will put in, since I am not worried about them bouncing out from a life on the road. PS rails are +/- 12 VDC Bruce
  13. This reminds me of an email I got. I was contemplating building a reflex box instead of a horn. The email said: "But you might "settle" for them once you have them built. Convenience and familiarity will always win out in the end. I know better...:)" [] I think for a lot of rooms, they can't be beat. Placement is way easier for sure. Beautiful boxes Tom, even if you don't know whose they are. Bruce
  14. More Deco than Nouveau I guess. A lot of the guys didn't like it, but I thought it was kinda cool. Wouldn't fit in a lot of places. I think Seti took these and posted them. I wanted to give credit where due. Bruce
  15. Well guys, the wife has finished round one of her treatment for Melanoma. She gained 30 pounds of fluid in four days. Swelled up like a balloon. Puts a real stress on your system for sure. She was able to receive 6 infusions of the IL-2 treatment, one of two approved treatments for malignant melenoma. After the sixth infusion, she started to have severe hallucinations. Fortunately, they weren't scary. In any case, they stopped the round there. As soon as they stopped the infusions, she started to lose the excess fluid. Two weeks at home and she is still tired and weak. But it is expected. She has lost all the fluid, and almost has her appetite back. That would help in the strength category. Tomorrow we head back to Atlanta to Emory to start the second round. First it was a fear of the unknown. Now it is both the known and the unknown. It would be easier to do if you knew the success rate was higher. As it is, only 16 percent respond to this treatment in a positive way. After they do this round they will do more scans. If they show no progress of the spread of the melanoma, the rounds will continue. Otherwise, they stop and we have other hard decisions to make. There really is no other treatment. But you do what you can. She is liking the Merlin feeding the amp to the Heresys. Mostly Bach, Vivaldi, Faure. Some Respighi, Sibelius, etc. Sounds so good. The Heresys excel at this kind of music. (I did have some Bela Fleck on yesterday -- anyone who says these don't have bass must have a real listen) Barbara and I thank you for the wonderful sound we get to enjoy. Bruce
  16. formica, This link was posted by a forum member (I forgot who already and it's only been ten minutes. pretty sad huh?) Look down the left side of this first page of pics. It's a pretty clean pic. Kinda art nouveau to me. Bruce http://beefalo.org/hope/Hope.html
  17. Parrot, He would be more inclined to use multiband compression AND eq. Bruce
  18. Whamo, The Merlin sounds wonderful with my ST-70. The GG would be good as well. Good choices if you don't need a bunch of inputs or phono pre. Bruce
  19. You can build one of the Leach SS amps. They are around 120 watts into 8 ohms. He sells the boards to, and provides a shopping list on his website. He also has one that is around 270 watts as well. They are builts on separate cards, so you can build a multi cahnnel amp if you want. http://users.ece.gatech.edu/~mleach/lowtim/ I have been tempted myself. Bruce
  20. I'm only using the Alesis so my wife won't have to deal with the Dynaco right now. I've been turning the system on in the morning and leaving it on all day for her. Then all she has to do is change CDs. The Alesis is an RA-100. 100wpc into 4 ohm, and 75 into 8. Works great with the Heresys. It is normaly connected to some small Alesis monitors I use in my recording setup. It has just taken a big back seat to all that is going on at our house these days. You can pick them up pretty cheap on eBay.
  21. If I remember correctly, the Panor ST-70 uses LEDs to set the bias (you still tweak the pots, but the LEDs are the indicators). That makes it pretty painless. My ST-70 outlived my other SS units. A tube pre will require no adjusting. I think one of the things that makes the Merlin a great buy is that it also has a tube rectified ps. And everything fits inside the case. The GG by Transcendent would be nice too. A good looking package. Still only single outs though. I am using my Merlin feeding an Alesis SS power amp at the moment, so that my wife doesn't have to pay attention to the hot EL34s. It sounds great with the HIIs. Good bass and excellent imaging. Shows bad recordings for what they are though-- bad recordings. The good ones are superb.
  22. Dennis, You can tease so well. Can you tell us how to do that? I have HIIs, but my son has older Heresys. Is that $130 a cabinet or total? Bruce
  23. I thought I was correct. The guy who added 6L6 output tubes to his EL84 amp pretty much only had to change the PS so the different voltages would be correct. He had a stout PS tranny on it, and swapped the 9 pin sockets an put in octals. But, yeah, going the other way will require a bit more care.
  24. Real drummers do the same thing, depending on the style of music. I used to have an article explaining this, but it's buried in a spare room at the moment. Bruce
