  1. While folks were pouring French wine in the streets, I sure didn't hear anyone say we should send back the Statue of Liberty. Marvel
  2. NOT the kind on your networks, okay? I've been reading reviews and looking at different models. What do some of you guys use? For instance, I was looking at a Bosch, which comes with both bases, so you can swap out very easily. 2.25 HP, variable speed, blah, blah... $210. Marvel
  3. One of my pastors was a Major in the French military. He's tough. Very compassionate, but tough as well. He also has some tough words for many of the French. (I do almost laugh out loud when he preaches because he sounds like Inspector Clouseau) Marvel
  4. ART isn't showing that they don't make the DI/O anymore, but I can't find a store that has it listed. Still, the list is only $195. I recenly repaired an ART amp, an SLA-1. Sweet amp, 100wpc in a 1U space. It just had a bad solder connection. The 4311s do have some breakup in the 5" midrange, but probably not at the levels I mix at. I would love to get a better set of crossovers in them and see what difference that would make. Marvel
  5. The newest LSR series monitors are the flattest response models JBL has made. They are exceptional. Obviously descended from the 4311 monitors (which have some issues), but a whole new ballgame. But what would you expect when it's 30 years later, huh? But the cost is almost identical. My 4311WX would cost just over a grand each due to inflation, and that is what the new ones cost. Marvel
  6. I have met a few famous folks, having worked as a news photog in Memphis for a number of years. But they are really just people like us. (Sorta) Alice COoper at the RCA studios in Chicago (studios now defunct) Gerald Ford Jesse Jackson Menachem Begin Priscilla Presley (she was nice, and really didn't look any different than the girl next door) Tom Paxton (I was playing bass and guitar for a group that opened for him at the Quiet Knight in Chi town) Styxx used my JBLs for a recording session Dan Fogelberg There were lots more, but the brain is getting fuzzy after so many years. Thanks Michael. The wife thought that would be a thread killer, but obviously not Laters
  7. I have decided to take a pass on the Monarch anyway (all in a matter of seconds). Sheesh-- it was an impulsive move on my part. I don't need more on my plate right now. Istari should get the amp! Marvel
  8. Sent a PM about the Monarch. Cheers, Marvel
  9. I'm suprised this didn't come back up after the announcment was made and we all find out that it is true. If you are an Apple Developer, right now you can buy a P IV, 3+ Ghz system running OSX. Seems like no one would want to buy one of the PPC models if they are going to be switching. I for one, might finally switch to one once they come out with them. As further fuel for the fire, the same person who broke the news/rumor about the processor change is reportedly saying that Intel is going to buy Apple. That could really give Microsoft pause I would think. I imagine that a specific bios or ROM will be required to boot OSX on an Intel platform. That is just MY prue speculation. Marvel
  10. Jesus Christ aka Prince of Peace, Lord of lords, Rose of Sharon, Savior, Bread of Heaven.... The others aren't too important to me other than the ones I am responsible for.
  11. Don't the K401 (synthetic newer model) only cost about $50 each? Or was it $150 each? Marvel
  12. Chris, I think Jim E. used ACAD to make the drawings. Perhaps you could get those files from him. It might be easier to generate your code that way. (then again, maybe not) Marvel
  13. Ken, The HIIs didn't have the SN stamped into the back of the cabinets and the sticker, as you say, is gone. Mine came the same way. Are the binding post cups round or rectangular? I think the round ones were older. I took out a wookfer on mine and found a dated inspection sticker inside. They cranked these out so fast that I figure the date on the sticker was close enough for me. Still wish I had the SN on mine but it doesn't really matter. Congrats and enjoy. btw, they sound great with tubes. Marvel
  14. As djk has pointed out, a piezo can outperform many compression driver tweeters, but they MUST have the crossover network set up properly for them to work well.

They, with the Industrial La Scala x over will handle 200 WPC, as opposed to the K 33 at 100 WPC. Some say they do not go quite as low... Very hard to hear it IMO? ---------------- I think the newer K33 is rated at 150 watts.

  17. I know that after visiting John Albright's place, I really wouldn't need any subs with the LS. He has them, but turned them off for me while I was there. Perhaps for HT use. Marvel
  18. A lot of the Altec crossovers are inside of cans. Dean -- Joind the dark side and log onto the Lansing Heritage forums. Ask fot eh schematic for one. I have found them to be really helpful. They don't get upset at all like we do here (NOT). Seriously, try them out: Lansing Heritage site Some of those guys do funny things. They bias the caps in the crossovers, etc. Refinish cabinets. Build them from scratch. Sounds like us, except the parts cost way more. Saw a pic of a Solen cap that looked the size of a soda can. Marvel

Now, I've got two daughters there at the University of Arkansas. ---------------- I almost hate Atlanta, and we drive to Mableton (West side) every week for church.
  20. See, if you all just had Heresys tilted back, you wouldn't be able to put anything on them. They would just slide off. We have a stack of sheet music on one cabinet, as it sits next to the piano. The other one has a small easel with a phot book on it. I don't think my wife has ever even tried to put plants on them, since the early '70s. But my house often looks like a studio with mic cables and mixers everywhere. Marvel
  21. You will also find that the Heresy II will rock out pretty well. A sub still isn't mandatory with them (let them comments fly!), but some of that depends on your musical tastes and at what volume you listen at. edwinr just got some to replace his KHorns and he is mighty pleased. KHorns are very fussy with placement. Marvel
  22. dragonfyr, Great exposition of the situation. I think another solid player that many thought was down for the count is Sun. Let's face it, their hardware is solid, and the fact that they have a fairly robust version of Solaris 10 for x86 architecture can only help. I don't like Solaris, but once it is set up, it works. I don't like any of them, but OSX is the most elegant front end. We also tend to forget all of the smaller chips that Intel makes for controls (embedded systems). There are zillions of those in the world. Money, money, money.... Marvel

As trite as it has become to repeat this ad infinitum, how many other speaker manufacturers have a group of users that would appreciate this level of detailed (and precise)photos of what goes into the construction of their cabinets? Of course this is a rhetorical question since only JBL and (a few others) have web sites devoted to their users. My hat is off to Klipsch for allowing us to have a forum to share these experiences and knowledge. ---------------- As you say, JBL is one of the few. Those guys are fanatics about their products too (including me, since I have JBLs). The Lansing Heritage site can be pretty cool. And too, it's great that Klipsch has this site for us to play! Marvel
  24. m00n, One of our computer science professors just left to go back to work at Intel. He will probably double his salary, but knowing what the profs make at our school, I'm not suprised. Can't remember the division he will be in. He used to move to Oregon every summer, rent a house for the whole family and still clear more than he made teaching. We will miss him greatly. Marvel
  25. We bought land in Wisconsin in the early '70s. $250 an acre. Sold is for a tad more in '88 when we moved to Tennessee. There are some beautiful areas in Wisconsin, and I would not mind moving back there except for the -30 degrees F in the winter. And I do mean beautiful! Over around Lacrosse is some great land. What we owned was in the northern part of the state. Still tornados though. Parts of North Georgia are nice. Lower part of Appalachians. Fairly temperate climate and lower cost of living than California. Houses go from $60k up. You can get a nice house for $130K, as long as it isn't in Atlanta. Marvel
