  1. Great pics. Up in northern Wisconsin, in the winter they drive trucks across Lake Superior to deliver goods to one of the islands. Pretty wierd seeing a semi out on the lake. Marvel
  2. DoctorC, It is a tape loop. The idea , when using the tape monitor switch, is so you can hear the signal as it goes through your tape deck. Great for checking your levels when you have a three head deck. If the signal breaks up, you know you are either overloading the tape deck electronics or the tape itself. Meters can lie. The output impedance of the pre should be smaller than your input impedance to the sound card. If they match, you get max signal transfer, but (here is the unknown) it can really mess with the other pre outs depending on the configuration. My three resistor solution is only meant to more effectively load the preamp tape out. Many amps have a 50k input impedance. Looking at the EMU site, from their specs, your card uses electronically balanced I/O, and is not transformer balanced. Not suprising as it is far less expensive. Marvel
  3. Kev, that is classic! " they would sell a bucket of chicken wings with a copper piece of foil over the top if you could hook it to an IPod and Best Buy would carry it."
  4. Gil, My older brother (age 58) worked on radar while in the USAF. He have a huge hearing loss due to the noise of the antenna rotation mechanism. I played guitar for a brother/sister act that once opened for Tom Paxton at the Quiet Night (Knight sp?) on Wells. Man, that does bring back memories. Long time ago. Marvel
  5. How are the outputs from the Sunfire isolated from one another? Can you wire up some resistors? Below will give you a zero insertion loss pad, but raise the input impedance to 30k. Values don't have to be exact and it will still work. You'll need one for each channel. If you want a different impedance to feed the Emu card, let me know. IN OUT 0--------R1-----------------------R2------------0 / Zin=30k ohms / Zout=1500 ohms R3 / / / 0 GND R1= 30k R2= 175 R3= 1355
  6. This is not to flame anyone, but most early (and even late) reference material always used the 1db value for what "most" folks discern as a change. Can many discern a smaller amount of change? Sure. But I thought the original use of the decibel measurement was that 1db value. Marvel
  7. I thought I remembered correctly, but science has come to state we can hear a 1db change, not 3db as has been stated here. The site below has great explanations on the decibel, along with samples (both visual and aural) http://www.phys.unsw.edu.au/~jw/dB.html Marvel
  8. Some people also see different colors for differnt sounds or pitches. It can be a hell for them. This is very well documented in medical literature. Marvel
  9. http://www.zzounds.com/item--THKMIMC0 It's $59
  10. The Heresy used a metal mid horn, which probably weighs a tad more than the plastic one in theHII cabinets. Also, the earlier Heresys have the larger K55, same as used in the KHorn and LS . It is a little meatier than the mid driver in the HII. Since it crosses at 700 Hz, they probably figured they didn't need to use the larger driver anymore (among other things of course) Love my HIIs. My son has Heresys. They are both great speakers. edit: Just reread your posts and see they are both HIIs. Interesting! Marvel
  11. Thanks to Glen Bui from the ACF for doing this research American Canine Foundation I have been able to obtain statistics on the American Pit Bull Terrier from AKC / A.D.B.A. / UKC for registrations on Pit Bulls. For the other breeds I used AKC/UKC statistics. " "The percentages below show us the percentage of the breed involved in fatal attacks v. the population of the breed, for the last 30 years in the USA. Apx. 240,000 - 12 Fatal Attacks Chow Chow .005% Apx 800,000 - 67 Fatal Attacks German Shepherds .008375% Apx. 960,000 - 70 Fatal Attacks Rottweiler .00729% Apx. 128,000 - 18 Fatal Attacks Great Dane .01416% Apx. 114,000 - 14 Fatal Attacks Doberman .012288% Apx. 72,000 - 10 Fatal Attacks St Bernard .0139% Apx 5,000,000- 60 Fatal Attacks American Pit Bull Terrier .0012% There have been over 400 fatal dog attacks since 1970 involving 30 different breeds. The majority were caused from unattended children that became victims. 268 fatal attacks occurred from negligence by parents of children up to the age of 7 years old. When taking into account all the circumstances involving fatal attacks there is no rational basis to ban or restrict a specific breed of dog. " C2003 ACF. All Rights Reserved. ========= There are some obvious issues here. This is only dealing with registered dogs, so the accuracy could be waaayyy off. On the forum where I got this info, it is estimated that there are over 55 million American Pit Bull Terriers in the U.S. They are the most popular breed here.
  12. Dave, I think they don't let you do the html in the sig anymore. Too bad, really. I replaced just about everything in my ST-70, including the power tranny. New front end board, sockets, etc. Pretty much just the chassis and output trannies left. Still got the cheap speaker terminals and input jacks. I wanted to get it done. Craig, The amp IS quiet. I just wanted to get the vinyl covered wire out of the amp. It was what I had on hand when I replaced everything, and I didn't want to spend more money at the time. It won't be hard to swap out that stuff with something a little more heat resistant.
  13. Have you noticed how those of us who are not doing the designing and building are always coming up with ways to make your life harder? Marvel
  14. Tom, It is absolutely crazy how many people use wireless with NO security. A co-worker drives around with a laptop, GPS, and software and maps out hundreds of locations with wireless access. Tons of them, including many businesses, don't have any security set up at all. Pretty sad. We live in the country, and I have a Netgear router w/wireless. It is only used for my daughter's laptop. When she was away at school, I totally disabled it. I haven't checked, But I think our house is far enough away from the neighbors anyway. We still have the security enabled on it though. You make our college's 14 servers seems like child's play. btw, you can also get a program called "hijack this", but use at your own risk. It will also find real applications that you want to keep, so delete with care. Some of the malware/virus stuff places things in the registry that you can't delete as admin. You have to find the keys and take ownership of them, before you can delete them, or set them so the system doesn't have permission to access the specific registry key, restart and them delete. There are some real jerks out there writing this stuff. Marvel
  15. Erik, at this link, has the plans just for you Scaled LS with 10" Drivers Go to the downloads section. Marvel
  16. Dave, Why is your ST-70 sitting silent? I finally did a rebuild on mine in late Dec, early January. It is sounding sweet. I have some wiring in it that I want to replace with some teflon insulated stuff, but it is pretty quiet and pleasing to my ear. Marvel
  17. Al, Not to hijack the thread, but are you making your horn kit so that they are left/right mirrors, i.e., the tweeter on the outside or inside of both left and right cabinets? Pretty cool what's going on here on the forums, and all you guys should be commended. Marvel
  18. There is no doubt that XP is the best of Microsoft's offerings so far. Yes, we are quite diligent about keeping the PCs clean. However, the wife still has a 266 PII, and it isn't going to run XP. We are just waiting to get one of the new $500 Dell boxes for her. ...but our third is going off to college this next Fall. Both of my PCs are dual, one a dual Celeron, long out of warranty and the other a dual Athlon (1.4 Ghz). Both of them run Win2k, but the Athlon will get redone with XP soon, mostly so I can put Premiere Pro on it. If the PC is clean to start with, you can upgrade gracefully from Win2K. Even the awful ME! It's just most people don't have a clean install of either at this point. That dual xeon ought to be able to handle XP. What model Dell is it? Marvel
  19. A dual 800Mhz xeon isn't exactly old technology. Sheesh, ship it to me if you don't want it. I still run Win2K on both of my computers at home (as well as at the school where I work). I use AdAware and Symantec Antivirus. The one computer has been up with Win2K since it came out. Do all the updates and don't use IE (this has already been mentioned. Win2K is no less secure than XP. My wife is still using Win98. We have DSL and use a router. This is one of the best things going. You can also use ClamWin Anti virus software, part of the GNU licensing stuff" http://www.clamwin.com/ I also use GAIM, the GNU IM client. That way you don't get the ads from AOL, and it works great. Macs are great machines. No one writes viruses for something that has less than 5% of the market. Marvel
  20. My HIIs aren't mdf, they are still the birch ply. Interesting. Marvel
  21. Drift Away was written by Mentor Williams, and recorded by Gray. http://www.dobiegray.com/discography4.htm He recorded it is '72. What a classic. Marvel
  22. My black lacquer Heresy IIs are okay. As was mentioned, a semi gloss. I actually like them as they tend to disappear in the room. Definitely not a high gloss piano lacquer finish. My son bought mine off ebay, and they are in pretty good shape. A couple of small dings in one side. It is a lacquer though. Marvel
  23. There are lots of good packages for doing this on the pc (or Mac) these days. Premiere, Final Cut, Vegas very cool, and does multi track audio quite well), Avid. All those are pricey. I got Premiere very cheap as I got an educational discount. I think Vegas would only be about $150 for me. It is quite tedious. The capture is in real time. Making the MP2 for the DVD software can be quite time consuming if you don't have a fast computer. OTOH, try rendering an animation sequence out sometime, and you find that your 20 second clip takes 15 hours. Pretty ugly. Make sure the UPS is working. Nothing like the power going off when you have five minutes left. The less expensive packages just don't give you as many options. Not as many video tracks or audio tracks. Not as many effects (just more cheesy ones!). But they can still work just fine. Videowave works okay. I think Sony (Vegas) also has Video Factory. Marvel
  24. I have a couple of comments. Beautiful! And someone said they should go into the corners. Yeah, probably, but the only pair of cornerhorns I have heard was a pair made from the Speakerlab plans. He had them out a good two to three feet from the corner and they sounded great. D-Man. I was thinking of the tweeter going in that same area on your speakers. They could be set back in a little though. Very nice work Chris. Marble for the sides? Cool. Marvel
  25. Welcome to the forum. I don't know that there is anything special about the '86 woofer. I believe the three letter acronyms are for the finish, i.e., HBR is Heresy Birch Raw. THis would mean a birch cabinet with no finish. I suppose mine would be HBL, as they are black lacquer. Marvel
