  1. You should really have all the parts, including the transformers, together to lay out the design before you build the box to put it in. With all due respect, it looks like you are going about it backwards. Marvel
  2. While out picking up a router for our DSL connection today, my youngest son and I stopped by the Tweeters in Chattanooga. They still have some Klipsch on display in big rooms. They have some KLF10s for $599. Mostly smaller stuff, like the SB 1, SB2. At least there you could hear what was being played. At Best Buy, there was so much other noise you couldn't tell much difference between the Klipsch and the Sony or Yamaha gear. Really too bad. A big warehouse room with everything turned on is no way to pick speakers. Marvel
  3. A close friend of mine worked for the DNR in Georgia a few years ago (quite a few, now that I think about it). He ran an old historic site south of Savannah, at Midway (I think). They had a new museum on one side of the road, and an old cemetary on the other, surrounded by a brick wall, supposedly built with slave labor. We are taliking about a really quiet place. One day a family stopped by and visited the cemetary. After wandering around for awhile, they came into the museum/gift shop and were asking about the area and other sites. The young son pulled on his dad's arm and asked him to ask my friend about the music. The guy says, "Oh, yeah, we were wondering how you got the music to play over in the cemetary. We couldn't see any speakers anywhere." My friend Roger told them that they didn't pipe in music over there and that they didn't have speakers. The family didn't really believe him. He had a couple more incidents like that, one concerning a church built in the late 1700s. It can be a weird area, with people professing to be Christians, and still going out to see their Witch Doctors at night. I know quite a few missionaries from different denominations, the denominations of which don't really believe in the demonic side of the supernatural. The missionaries didn't either, until they got out into some of the areas in the world away from TV and all of our sciences. Even if I had a few million to play with or throw away, I wouldn't ever consider getting the Ghost in a Jar. Marvel
  4. ...and he was so kind to refrain from saying that MP3s actually suck for quality audio playback. Compressed vs. uncompressed should be a no-brainer, but we do always want something on the cheap (I do). It just depends on whether or not we are will to accept the downsides of it all. Dave, Years before people came along with digital audio, I hauled my old Teac 3340s (still have it) on vacation to Maine. I made a nice recording of the waves hitting the rocks. Sadly, I no longer have the tape. I only have the reel to reel for sentimental purposes. If anyone wanted to buy one, I would consider selling at a resonable price. Marvel
  5. If you want real eq (har, har!) go to the manley labs site and check out their Pultec EQ. The originals are really sought after. Costs dollars though ($2k +). THey have bypass swithces. They aren't pretty, but they sound (or don't have a sound) wonderful. http://www.manleylabs.com/containerpages/eqp1a99.html Too bad they are so ugly. They are meant for studio racks. Marvel
  6. Oops! Here's the house. Marvel
  7. When you use the switch on the amp to reverse the speakers, you are most likely changing it at the preamp level. The speaker is still being driven by the same output amp. If you don.t move the wires on the amp, you won't know. Trust me, I've got an old JVC that has all the same features, plus it came with the schematic for it. It has come in very handy over the last 30 years. Marvel
  8. Again, thanks for the info. We get DSL sometime in the next week or so, which means I can have some drawings done, and put them up on a personal web site without waiting quite so long for the uploads. Right now it is like waiting for Godot. Plus, I haven't used True Space in close to a year, so I'll have to learn it all over. Marvel
  9. Dale, Glad to see you are getting somewhere with the house. Marvel
  10. djk, Without the horn inside the cabinet, how deep should the base be? Could it just be made the same height as the top of the LS? That would give a bit more volume than you spec'd out. I could then adjust my drawing to suit. I think I made it the same height as the top, just for the fun of doing it. Marvel btw, I meant to say I had a folder labeled djk_wisdom. Sooner or later it comes in handy.
  11. I've heard of snow jobs, but this is ridiculous! Reminds me of Waterloo, but we didn't have giraffes. Marvel
  12. djk, After reading a lot of your older posts, I came up with this idea, to add onto the bottom with even less of a mod to the cabinet. Other than making the LS taller. You already have a hole into the woofer chamber, so why not just add on to it? Marvel ps I even have a folder labeled ! I knew you would be flattered.
  13. Justin, Most foam, like egg crate foam or matress pad foam, isn't good for controlling bass frequencies at all. Plus, it isn't the least bit fire retardant. I'm thinking of a recent nightclub fire, that wasn't using something like Auralex or Sonex acoustic foam. Two good brands BTW, if you like the foam look. Dale, Are you talking about those hard fiberglass panels, with all sizes of fiber in them? They are lot weigh a lot, but they really work. You sure need the six inches of insulation inside the concrete walls. While living outside of Madison, WI, we had just the concrete walls in the basement. Only halfway in the ground as well. Just about unuseable in the winter. We've gotten smarter since then, and moved south. Better get that finished within the next couple of weeks, before the early snows hit. Very neat stuff. Marvel
  14. Tom, I think I've seen that pic before. Isn't that a KHorn upside down up in the corner (painted white)? Marvel
  15. Rock bass, a 5 string bass goes to a B. The A below that is 55Hz. Like I said before, listen to some Victor Wooten. Listem to some Edgar Meyer on acoustic bass. Meyer can even reveal how good your highs are, as he can do some things that fiddle players can't do. Drums are a different story. A kick will have a pretty strong fundamental around 20-25Hz. That is where the chest thumping comes in, not from the bass. Marvel
  16. Tony, I finally got another look at the pic of the inside. Pretty interesting. I guess the Hammond logo was so visible in a couple of the pics that I jumped to conclusions. Marvel
  17. Mark, Those tranny prices are high aren't they. Small shop I guess. I wonder how they compare in the real world with some Hammonds. They are very reasonably priced. It's all Hammonds in Tony's PP 2A3. At least the interstage transformers. Marvel
  18. Trey could give you the correct price, but I think the K-33 is about $130 US. They were right at $100 foir quite a while, but have gone up. Marvel
  19. I just wrote/emailed to Eminence to get the values for the K33. You can't order it directly from them, but the could probably give you the T/S parameters for the other models. If you order a hundred, you can have them make them for you. Marvel
  20. Since the smoke makes a film on parts, they tend to get almost gooey with the dust that then collects. You can also get aerosol cleaners for electronics (some are even okay for the environment). Then you pretty much just wash off the parts. You would be amazed at the crud that will come off. Blowing out with an air compressor will help dry off the chemicals. Care with the air, as too high a velocity can blow parts off the boards (really). Still, when you are done it will look like new inside. Try these guys for different cleaners (Mouser carries their stuff, as well as other vendors): http://www.techspray.com Later, Marvel
  21. This is the Magnequest replacement for the MarkIII OPT: MQ-431-CL Upgrade replacement for Dynaco Mark 3 and Mark 2 amps. Also replaces original on 60W Sunn amps that came with Dynaco output xfmrs. Matches to 2 6550, EL34, or KT88 tubes. Rated 60W, 4300 ohm impedance with 43% screen taps. Note, this unit has 4, 8 & 16 ohm taps (the old A-430 only had 8 & 16 ohms). $189 each. They are supposed to be pretty accurate replacements, but mdeneen should could be correct. This is from the Triode Electronics site Marvel
  22. David "Fathead" Newman -- Mr. Gentle Mr. Cool a tribute to Duke Ellington SOunds awesome on a set of horns -- on Kokopelli Records
  23. I like the part with the weights in the top of the tires, so when they get a little nudge, they roll uphill. I got it as a QT file, so I don't have to be online to watch. Gave a copy to the physics teachers at the college where I work. THey were impressed. Marvel
  24. As I recall from a couple of other posters, you have to take the driver off the horn to put the horn through from the front. Then the pieces all fall apart and can be fun to put back together. They should sound better mounted on the front, as the wave front from the horn doesn't have to suddenly go through the front panel with the top and sides parallel. But they do sound good on the back. Marvel
  25. But putting on new strings is sooo good. That small window between the too much zing and the going dead part! If you have a very good acoustic, you are way into the dead string part before you realize it. Then you meet people who say they have had the same strings on for five years. "Oh, you mean I should change them?" Basses are a different matter entirely. Marvel
