  1. I am completely shocked these amps and tubes are still here.... Guys, there is at least $1500 in tubes here, not to mention some of the best amps on this planet to put them in!!! WTF? If I didn't already have VRD's, I'd be all over this like a bum on a bologna sandwich....
  2. IME, It's sure easy to get blessings from yourself.
  3. "Transformers are/were their problem." Well that would be a first.... I have worked on over 200 of these, no joke, and have never once seen one with a bad transformer. Matter of fact, in all the years I have been working on solid state gear, I have only seen 2 bad transformers. This just don't happen.....

How much for the green ones?
  5. The 9090DB is the better balanced sounding receiver. The 9090 are a little hot on the top end for my tastes, but everyone is different. They both are really very good, and it will depend on your preference and mating speakers.
  6. Get you an old Adcom GFA-535. Not the MkII, the original. This is one sweetheart of a little amp, and Adcom never made anything else that sounded this good IMO...
  7. But Totaldac IS the only player that is making the actual DAC's out of these resistors. There are no off the shelf DAC chips in the Totaldac's. These resistors ARE the DAC's.... The D1 Dual uses over 200 of them, at about $20 a piece, it is pretty easy to see where the money is. Like crystal clear. Then you got casework, Premium Clocks, Inputs, outputs, circuit boards, supplies, packaging, audio shows, overhead, profit...... Don't matter, just stick with your W4S. If it makes you happy, so be it. That's what this is all about. Your blinders save you money
  8. Expensive they are..... Doubt they cost more than your current house though! I hear it all the time. I'm an idiot for owning such a thing, when I can go buy a nice car for the money. Well, all I can do with a car is drive it. I have no remorse, whatsoever. People have their priorities. I have mine. Is this DAC $30K better than a $5K DAC? Depends on where your priorities lie
  9. My monies comparison was for perspective. Don't read too much into it, but I think I made my point?
  10. Fully discrete, R2R DAC's done right, is as good as it gets IMO. My Totaldac is so far beyond any other DAC I have heard, it is not even funny. Pricey, yes, but if one wants off the merry go round, this will do it. Take your pick as to which Totaldac, as each one easily competes with anything double their price.
  11. Yes, DAC's absolutely sound different from one another... Just like vinyl rigs. FE, a $5000 vinyl rig sounds different compared to a $50,000 vinyl rig. The more expensive DAC's give much more transparency, dynamics, etc... DAC's are very good anymore, and I would go as far as saying, a $5K DAC could compete with a $5K vinyl rig. Now, say you are comparing a top flight vinyl rig to a top flight DAC.... The vinyl rig will be better in this "endgame", but not by much.
  12. Ah yes... The beautiful world of NOS DAC's. There will be nothing else that will do for you now, in digital land. Your only upgrade will be another NOS DAC.
  13. Here's my theory, and believe to be the bottom line.... There are only a few DAC's out there, IMO, that will have a home next to a world class analog rig. Even the best digital will be a more convenient substitute, with subtle sonic compromise. Here's the kicker. Analog playback cut directly to a lacquer, made into a metal master, then mother, then pressed to vinyl. This is something digital can't compete with in my opinion. Will it ever? I don't know. Depends on how good A to D converters get, but somehow I doubt it. The second that recording goes through an A to D converter, you lose something. Same can be said for converting the lacquer, to a metal master, to a mother, etc... But I believe this to be the lesser evil. Because it is still analog and or mechanical, and bares closer resemblance to the original recording. No electronics other than the recording equipment are in the way of the actual music, and no electronics are needed to pick up a signal off a vinyl record. Modern digital can get very damn close though, and I am close enough with my current digital front end, that I trade for the convenience. DAC's are no longer much of a shortcoming, so long as you have a very good one. The biggest shortcoming with most peoples digital front ends is the digital source, which is just as important as the DAC. What does the best vinyl playback do better sonically, than the best digital? The most obvious difference is the ability to create a true spooky realistic holographic image. An image with quiet space all around and behind the artist, as if there is an actual presence in the room with you. The best vinyl rigs do this. The best digital gets close, but not quite as good. Another thing is resolution. Biggest being ambient resolution. You get tons of this with the best vinyl rigs. Not as much or as obvious with the best digital. This is all just MO based on some brainstorming, and what I have heard listening to some very high end sources. YMMV.
  14. This one should get your attention.... This is said to compete with the PS Audio DS, PDX, KillerDAC, PD, etc. and only $750! https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=2&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CCUQFjABahUKEwjFoLDj-rLHAhUG0oAKHSmSAJQ&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.gieseler.com.au%2Fpage2%2Findex.html&ei=2VDTVYXQI4akgwSppIKgCQ&usg=AFQjCNEvQz_RzOtQ0rwzWzLakXDRSnMIAg&bvm=bv.99804247,d.eXY
