  1. The Music Box in Wellesley, Mass Was one of the first (maybe the very first).klipsch delears . They were also said to be the first hi fi store also. Mr bell the owner turned me on to khorns when i wasd a kid. He was so in to the hi fi thing that he took a pair of khorns, marantz amp and ampex tape deck to the worlds fair in 59 or 60 to truly demo sereo to the world. I think it was a set he sold to a good freind in Boston. One of these days I will post the story that was printed in a early hifi mag. Sadly the Music Box closed in the early 90,s when Mr bell retired to Maine. They were the only klipsch delear in the Boston area up tell the early 80,s or late 70,s whern tweeters ect became a Klipsch delear. Mr Bell's music box was so in to khorns that they would put your name on a plaque and add it to there khorn wall ownes wall.I always wanted my name up. But back then khorns were just $$$ out of my reach. He son was the lead singer in some local famous Boston based bands and had a few pairs of old bet up lascalas that he toured with. I always wanted my name up. But back then khorns were just $$$ out of my reach. Anyway the music boxed sold a lot of early klipsch stuff. I wonder if there are recordes still around on the amount sold? Sure would be cool to talk to My Bell about khorns.
  2. I love my Benchmark DAC 1. I have 2 one right now one feeds my studio moniters when I am mixing in the digital world. The other is set up in my Home khorn room hot wired to a old Nak oms7. This Dac 1 has trully taking over in the pro recording World replacing many 3 grand plus converters. Many feel there is nothing better and a lot of a mastering enginers use them.
  3. Hello all just back from Vacation and I see a old set of Cornwalls are stirring things up a bit. Pretty cool and in Boston ,I live only 20 miles from Boston. They look like 61 Cornwalls. My 62 has the pie logo. plus I think it has a letter in front of the #. My 60 cornwall is # 118 dated April 15 1960. Hope this helps date them.
  4. The Nakamichi oms 7 are great decks and can befound cheap on ebay they have nice converters and were built like tanks.
  5. when was the first pie logo used? my guess is around 61-62 my 62 cornwall has the silver lined pie logo my 68 has the clear I think the clear pie logo was used only in 67-68 years . my. Alos kilpsch maight have used whatever logo was on hand . so you might see earlier logos used after new versions. maybe the new logo were plasced on top of the old ones when refilling the logo bin?
  6. I would tend to leave the shorthorn all orig if you can. They look real nice to me for vintage short horns. I would think the value would go down if they were refished and the grills changed. You could always make new front panels and keep the orig ones foe resale later. I once refinshed a 63 fender strat to look new. Yhe orig sunburst finsh was a bit worn and faded I end up turning a 10- 15 guitar in to 5 grand . I like my klipsh Orig I always pass on refinsh vintage ones on ebay.
  7. drivers 60 cornwall. I do not know of anyone that has nos rebuild kits for the Ev klipsch 15. If I find some I let you guys know of them. I am also looking for Nos rebuild kits for The Stevens trusonic 15's. I 2 blown ones and one that is badly torn.
  8. greg928s4 Yes! I do have all three matched early klipsch stereo set up with 59 klipsch brocher showing this set up. the model h and short horn are set up to match the khorn output of 104 db's at 3 feet. i attached a pic of the early cornwall like your shorthorn.
  9. greg928s4, I just looked at your short horns pics they are nice. My 59 shorthorn is the same as yours right down to the front id tag, drivers, finish and grill cloth. I also have a matching early rear port cornwall with the same front grill, drivers and fiish as your early shorthorn. I think late short horns are more rare than the early ones . That late tag is pretty cool. btw my 59 shorthorn came from klipsch with a model h and khorn all set up with crossovers to match the output of the khorn .They were sold together by klipsch for center channel stereo. with the khorn taking care of the low end the shorthorn foe one side and the model h in the center. All three speakers have the same finsh and grill cloth as your 59. They came with a klipsh stereo hook up gudied showing the three diffrent speaker working together. klipsch was offering the shorthorn and model H as stereo upgrades to ad to the mono khorn back in the late 50,s and early 60,s pretty cool. I think the short horn has one of the best looking front grills Klipsch ever had. and the eraly cornwall used the same one. i was thinking of using my shorthorn front panel on a early Cornwall clone to match cornwall.
  10. Black lac is about the simplest paint to touch up. real lacure the stuff klipsch used comes in one finsh only. wen un buffed it is a satin finsh when dulled buy sanding it is flater and when buffed it become semigloss or with lots of buffing high gloss. It is real easy to touch small areas with a brush then wet sand and hand rub. The lacure will melt into itself and become one with the old finsh. Try doing a internet search under guitar refinshing and you will find some sites that will sell you real lacure in a small can or spray can. Many states have outlawed Automotive lacure but some still sell it.
  11. just rember the dbx driverrack converts all audio to digital before cossing over the signal ect. i have one for my big pay. it ok when i am in a hurry and want a ok stereo 3 way cross over. but when i want that anolog punch I just would use it at all. I think a tru anolog crossowver made with high quitly parts would be nice for khorns. the old aAhley crossowvers can be modified for cheap with beter parts for good hifi sound. To me any many other modern dbx is crap. They made some good stuff back in the 80,s. but nother new I like. the old dbx compresser were nice and still are but even they cant reprodusce somthing close.
  12. Well, The bad news speakers is gone trash was picked up with it in it. The early khorn was out side for almost a week\ and the trash came yesterday. I had my freind have his brother inlaw go back and look and it was gone. The khorn was a early one as it had the basball plate shaped woofer door and the large cap early crossover. he said the crossover looked just like my 51 crossover. right down to the wooden coils. Dame I wish he had called me when he was down in the keys. Anyone in the BIG PINE KEY area might want to keep a eye out at the local dump or land fill it might be there. btw early khorns usaly came as one unit not pairs as all was mono back then. I wonder what was powering them and did they chuck that also!.
  13. A good freind just came back from the florida keys. the house across the street was being cleaned out and they had put a early Khorn out for the trash. It is a very early one from the 50,s. It has a large stevens trusonic mid horn with the rare all wood mid horn. It might be a 40 or ealy 50 khorn. He could not read the serial no as there is a lot of wood panels stacked against it. I am trying to get his brother in law who live close by to get the speaker and maybe ship to Boston. If he wont deal with it I will post the address and anyone in the keys is welcome to get it. As of today it is still there. Btw my freind knows the difrence between a early and later khorn. I think it has the same horn lens that the 47 that was being ofred has. Anyway I hope someone gets it if I can't get it shipped.
  14. Just got a cool pair of orig 63 horzontal la scalas. I found them right hear on the klipsch site almost 6 mounth ago, took a while to iron ou the deal. The cabnets are made of fir painted black with the mid and high horns siting on top of the bas cab,. I think they use the same mounting board as found on the d type khorn. bas cab is a about the same size as the botom two part pro la scal. They have that cool early pro look I love.
  15. Dark side of the Moon on have speed Mastered record
  16. "The bass horn even needs to be changed a little, but that doesn't cost much. You need to buy a few T-nuts and and wood screws and eliminate the woofer mounting board." No change in the bass horn is needed if you keep the stock wood /glass midhorn. i thought the bass horn mounting board is also the phase plug so getting rid of it will just muck up the sound and probly drop out put. To me updating a real vintage khorn from the Golden age will just kill the sound. The early mid horn is just so much warmer and detailed sounding compared to than the later plastic and metal horns. On day will find the early khorns price riseover that of later ones( supply and demand) as more hear the early ones. Just look what hapend to Fender Strats and Gibson les pauls from that from that a age. you can buy one for leess than 15 grand and some are over a 100 grand. It's a good time to pick up vintage khorn before they rise in Value.
  17. I have tried all the soild state Marshall amps ect and not one even comes close to my 69 and 67 marshalls (50 and super 100 watt) not even close. I have tried them side by side through the same cabnets from orig 4x12 to old jensen cabs. hell not even the new reishue marshalls come close.
  18. The early khorn from the 50's have the same bass output as later ones.It was a early 60's cab that may have less output. But I am not so sure about that. I have 4 khorns from the 50 and they all blow away any lascala. As far as tone I like the smother sound of the early khorns drivers and midhorn ect. to me any many other s they are the holly grail of khorns. built back before price cuts cheapend the drivers buld and crossovers. dont let anyone full you. The early khorns rock. of all my khorns and lascalas the stock 51 sound the best
  19. Gilbert, Yes my oldest ve bus is a famed 23 window sunroof. Infact it is one of the rarest of them all being a 52 ,as it is from the first 6 mounths of production. It is also know as a barndoor model having the extra large rear engine lid (pre 55). The early bus price's are going through the roof latly. I have not seen a early bus like mine for sale in 5 years so I can't say what it is worth these days. The closest. I think a early 23 window barndoor in real nice restored shape wopuld bring 30- 75 grand. A all orig unrestored one in mint sahpe would bring big bucks as the bus collecters are starting to search for orig ones that havent been messed with. I do Know of one 52 23 window that has only 18k on it and is trully mint. It must be worth a bit today. I bought all my buses when they were cheap luckly. nice thing about the old buses is the can move alot of vintage Klipsch at once. just wish they had the power of my (know becoming vintage) 900 turbo Saabs. But then were would be the fun in climbing a long hill with the dead cranking be. Somethimes slow is good.
  20. How about the old jbl 2482 2"driver I have a few lying around left over form my old horn load Pa.
  21. I am no deadhead but I do have 6 old vw buses(from 52 to 85). Having vw buses put you in contact with many deadheads as alot of my freinds are. From what I am told live dead was always the best . Try to find a live tape that not to far off from the master(or better yet burn or recoded to tape a copy from a master. Many dehadehead taspers recorded with nice nakamich decks so sound quilty can be high. The dead back in the day had a very nice sound sytem live with a separt pa for each instrument ect. the also sent live pa feeds to taspers to mixin with live mikes. I heard the deasd 3 times 76, 78 and and 80 back then the did have a very nice live sound.
  22. HDBRbuilder got it right, first true stero demo at a WORLD FAIR. which was a pretty big deal in it day. Never ment to mean worlds first stereo demo I think bell labs and or Western Electric did that in the 30,s or earlier.
  23. My biggest problem with the new bose system is the fact that the electronics and amp moduel sit on the floor with the input jacks facing up. I think just one spilled beer would tost the whole sytem. I thought that alone made it a toy that costs way to much. The selling point Bose makes is that the sound volume dosn't change through out the room. who how they do that.
