  1. This is a good timing/bad timing kind of thing. As I was selling off collection of vintage speakers (that seemed to multiply like rabbits via Craigslist) in preparation for moving to warmer climes for at least part of the year, I came across Chorus II's at a price just too good to pass up. Finally broke the news to the wife that yes, I still have too many speakers. Survived that relatively unscathed-I guess she does have me figured out. But as I peruse various UHaul and other purveyors of cardboard boxes, I'm not finding what I need. In the worse case scenario, I guess I could put them in the back of the Explorer but that will of course mean I'll have to leave clothes or the dog behind-and I'm not really anxious to do that. Any suggestions/alternatives that come to mind would be appreciated.
  2. Yes, I hope they rectify this asap. It is a real valuable resource to which I often refer.
  3. Well just before I rekindled my love affair with vintage audio, I purchased a large screen tv (2 years ago). At the same time I purchased a Sony home receiver because I had been happy with my previous "ES" purchase. Fast forward to now and I'm getting ready to retire and relocate. I have a SW12-II thats been setting unused a great deal of the time over the last 20 years (virtually unused for reasons I won't go into here). In any event I wanted to hook up the sub to the new receiver and in the fine print discover that while I can use a (2-channel setting), it won't interact with the sub in that mode. (Darn or worse). My question them becomes, is this just a bad choice in equipment (feels likely) or is this a common issue. If I want to purchase a new receiver that will utilize the subs properly in 2 channel mode. Any and all advice welcome and appreciated. I will keep my vintage system(s) as they are but want a HT that uses at least one sub and which can also play streaming music to the system when I'm in that room. Thanks Del

  5. What part of Arizona? I'll be retiring to Green Valley, South of Tucson then?
  6. I've had three pieces restored thus far and have been happy with each. One had an intermittent problem remaining but we finally figured it out. We have a great vintage shop here with the common exception that it takes a long time for them to get to your piece (4-6 months often). One intriguing observation is that the Pioneer SX-1250 that I've had recapped, sounds exactly like the one I recently acquired that hasn't been. Trying to figure out if this is good or bad. Leaning toward good because I really like the sound. Any thoughts?
  7. Very nice! I like the concept and the execution. A friend with a woodworking shop has signed up to make me a couple of exact replicas for the risers, but this idea of using them without the factory risers is starting to sound appealing. I may do both as an experiment-since my impending retirement is going to give me some time to tinker-and to which I'm looking forward.
  8. Wow, I did track down that thread and am impressed, amazed and nearly convinced to give that a go. Thanks for sharing. Much appreciated.

    Are we alone?

And is the absence of evidence, evidence of absence or just incomplete data?
  10. I see it is now at 1.11 million in the first week! I'm constantly reminded that everyone has different musical tastes. Last Friday we had our annual staff lunchtime Halloween Party. No liquor as we are a substance abuse treatment center among other things. I have numerous times over the years had each staff member give me the name of a song that is meaningful in some way to them. Then I play them and whoever can identify, the song, and who suggested it wins $5.00. Creates a lot of competition among a group that is not competitive normally. This time we had a huge carpeted conference room to work with and I dragged my newly acquired Chorus II's there so I could really turn up the volume and get a feel for them –– while showing them off to some of the staff who are interested in such. I can't tell you the diversity of musical tastes represented, most was pretty middle of the road, lots of rock, some show tunes even a couple of rap "songs". But all in all it is very well received and enjoyable for everybody. As in music, art and love, there is just no accounting for taste-and that's probably a good thing.
  11. No affiliation, just in my neighborhood. Been on CL a week or so. http://omaha.craigslist.org/ele/5289699826.html
  12. I think this is true of anybody with a store front. It's a challenge particularly with consignment. Often the seller wants a certain net and after the cut for the store, the price is too high. I have had stuff on consignment and it didn't sell just because of this. In retrospect I should have taken this fact into consideration. Bottom line is the store has to make a profit too. I certainly have purchased from vintage stores and am glad they are available.
  13. I was in the store yesterday when a young guy and his wife were picking up those poorly laminated grille-less Heresy's and a small vintage receiver. He was very knowledgable, reads this forum and has big refinishing plans for the speakers. It was great to see. It's one of the great things about having a vintage dealer in the area.
  14. While I think like in any online debate some posts are more interesting and useful than others, some posts are largely being made to score points. On the other hand, I do enjoy the passion that envelopes the whole debate and is one of the things that attract me to this forum and the personalities represented here. I assume most of us here have a passion for music-though that sometimes gets lost in the details. Just my thoughts, others mileage will vary.
  15. Yes, I agree. This is a very decent price, Locally, they sell for $1500 if they are recapped and as much as $1000 if they are original in good condition. I guy in Des Moines has a true New Old Stock like with boxes, etc. for $1750.00. Prices do continue to go up it seems. I actually have two-one recapped and one original and they sound identical which is an interesting topic in its own right from my perspective. Listening to one now. It's definitely the sound of my youth.
  16. Hey, let's not make too strong a connection between lunatics and guys in their sixties!
  17. I get to this store once or twice a week. Great guy who has taught me a lot and sold me some items as well. Has some good technicians who like most are quite busy. As Duder says stands behind his stuff. Also some of it is there on consignment which impacts the prices, but if you make an offer he will listen. Well worth the visit. For some reason, Heresy's sell for more in this area than most others I have seen. It is a great place to hang out and meet others with similar interests.
  18. Roy was very special. I love the Black and White concert DVD, etc. Interesting to read about him. He was a pretty savvy businessman, great loss to music. One of my first 45's was "Pretty Woman".
  19. Well you will do what you want. But just so you know what you are missing get something anything to raise your speakers up so the centre of the mid horn in at your seated ear level play with the toe in to adjust for this new location and angle of the horns and then you can compare what you hear to listening to the speakers sitting down on the floor on the factory riser. Factory is not always better. This make a big difference especially with speakers like the CF3/4 where the mid horn is so very low it fires at your knees and that is just poor design. The KG configuration with the horn up above the two vertically stacked woofers is a much better cabinet option because it get the mid horn up to your seated ear level where it should be. Tilting mid and tweeter either up or down skews the sound stage and image it is not natural and your brain can figure out whats happening. Have fun experimenting and enjoy your speakers. Best regards Moray James. . I will do that for sure. Much appreciated!
  20. While I like and will consider the Skylan idea-though my heart leans toward getting these back as close to original as possible. The other factor which my friends in the Philanthropic Foundation world call "proportionality", which is to say, the stands would cost what I paid for the Chorus II's.
  21. Thanks a lot, that is a very innovative idea which holds a lot of promise in my mind. I will definitely consider that.
  22. TV last night wasn't doing much for me, so I pulled up Craigslist for about the 10th time yesterday. Just 43 minutes earlier someone had posted a pair of Black Chorus II's for a reasonable price. After a few minutes of texting we agreed on a deal and I picked them up this morning and have them humming along in my office until I can work up the courage to take them home. Grilles are perfect as are the badges. Frankly the bases are chipped pretty badly. The paint has just been rubbed thin and off in a few spots, but no dings or gouges. I'm guessing it would be pretty simple to get someone to rebuild the bases new and since I need some paint, I can make it all match pretty well. I had been waiting for Walnut versions, but couldn't pass these up. Any advice on this line of thinking, any source for someone who might build bases, and the specific paint Klipsch used on these. I also have a similar vintage THX certified Klipsch home theatre whose pieces could use the same paint. Seems like I read a post where someone posted the specific paint, but have been unable to locate it so far. Thanks in advance. Del
  23. dtel and Tarheel win !!!!!! Bring them back! Im notifying the wife right now If my reality was only as good as my memory, things would have been perfect. At least in the Midwest, Vietnam notwithstanding, I think the 60's culture that started on the West Coast, really didn't arrive until the 70's,
  24. Those were the days. Still can be found if you know where to look!
