  1. randog, a friend of mine recently ahd his sub start humming. Even without the inputs connected,it started as soon as it was plugged in. He called Tech Support, and was told that it was probably due to a screw that might have came loose inside. He gave my friend directions on how to take it apart and fix. He did so and it fixed the hum,but then discovered that the amp was fried. So best bet would be call Tech and explain problem and maybe they can help. ------------------ Jerry CP RULZ ------------ Mains: KG 5.5 Rears: KG 3.5 Center: KLF-C7 Subs: (2) Antique wooden coffins with (3) 12" Advents in each Receiver: HK AVR-80 DD Processor: HK ADP-303 DTS Processor: Rotel RDA 985 AudioControl Phase Coupled Activator Series Three DVD: Toshiba 4109X Laserdisc: Yamaha CDV-W901 5 CH Amp(for subs): Rotel RB-985 Single Cass Deck: HK TD-420 Dual Cass Deck: HK DC-520
  2. I'm HK all the way! I wouldn't have it any other way. They are marvelous with Klipsch! Don't be fooled by the low wattage specs of their units. They can really push a system. Like Montique said,it may be lower, but is pure clean power. I've recently hooked up the 120 & 220 for a couple of friends and think they are still making fantastic products. I think Denon is very good. But have always been happy with HK,so will stick with them. ------------------ Jerry CP RULZ ------------ Mains: KG 5.5 Rears: KG 3.5 Center: KLF-C7 Subs: (2) Antique wooden coffins with (3) 12" Advents in each Receiver: HK AVR-80 DD Processor: HK ADP-303 DTS Processor: Rotel RDA 985 AudioControl Phase Coupled Activator Series Three DVD: Toshiba 4109X Laserdisc: Yamaha CDV-W901 5 CH Amp(for subs): Rotel RB-985 Single Cass Deck: HK TD-420 Dual Cass Deck: HK DC-520
  3. Miron, When deciding on speakers, you need to ask yourself how you are going to use them. Movies vs. HT. That's the 1st thing I ask friends when they are searching for speakers. Paradigm really kicks butt for HT.But when it comes to pure musical enjoyment, they suck! Klipsch handles both very well. I just recently helped set-up an expensive HT system for a guy's new house. It has Paradigm. It was awesome! Actually had the ceiling tiles moving. But the highs were a little flat. I've been listening to Klipsch horns for about 5 yrs now and IMO think they are the best! ------------------ Jerry CP RULZ ------------ Mains: KG 5.5 Rears: KG 3.5 Center: KLF-C7 Subs: (2) Antique wooden coffins with (3) 12" Advents in each Receiver: HK AVR-80 DD Processor: HK ADP-303 DTS Processor: Rotel RDA 985 AudioControl Phase Coupled Activator Series Three DVD: Toshiba 4109X Laserdisc: Yamaha CDV-W901 5 CH Amp(for subs): Rotel RB-985 Single Cass Deck: HK TD-420 Dual Cass Deck: HK DC-520
  4. The KLF-C7 is also a good match for the KG series. I just got mine about 2 months ago to match my KG 3.5s. ------------------ Jerry CP RULZ ------------ Mains: KG 5.5 Rears: KG 3.5 Center: KLF-C7 Subs: (2) Antique wooden coffins with (3) 12" Advents in each Receiver: HK AVR-80 DD Processor: HK ADP-303 DTS Processor: Rotel RDA 985 AudioControl Phase Coupled Activator Series Three DVD: Toshiba 4109X Laserdisc: Yamaha CDV-W901 5 CH Amp(for subs): Rotel RB-985 Single Cass Deck: HK TD-420 Dual Cass Deck: HK DC-520
  5. Like HornEd, I prefer full-range speakers as surrounds on side walls facing each other and behind listening area. Mine are about 2 ft behind my couch. I've had this set-up for several years and love it. ------------------ Jerry CP RULZ ------------ Mains: KG 5.5 Rears: KG 3.5 Center: KLF-C7 Subs: (2) Antique wooden coffins with (3) 12" Advents in each Receiver: HK AVR-80 DD Processor: HK ADP-303 DTS Processor: Rotel RDA 985 AudioControl Phase Coupled Activator Series Three DVD: Toshiba 4109X Laserdisc: Yamaha CDV-W901 5 CH Amp(for subs): Rotel RB-985 Single Cass Deck: HK TD-420 Dual Cass Deck: HK DC-520
  6. Personally,I would love to try bass shakers with my system. I am one of the odd movie watchers that would rather feel the LFE during a movie. That is why I have never bought a powered sub. Hearing the walls rumbling doesn't impress me unless I can feel it. I mean,be honest, a home theater is all about putting us into the action. What good is it if we can't feel the explosions or the footsteps of the t-rex? Lately,I've been toying with the idea of actually installing subs under couch. Already, one coffin is sitting right against back of couch and other is in middle of room. So already I'm getting enough bass! Some of you have mentioned the cheaper bass shakers, but has anybody tried Clark's Tactile Transducers? I was wondering if they are worth the high price? ------------------ Jerry CP RULZ ------------ Mains: KG 5.5 Rears: KG 3.5 Center: KLF-C7 Subs: (2) Antique wooden coffins with (3) 12" Advents in each Receiver: HK AVR-80 DD Processor: HK ADP-303 DTS Processor: Rotel RDA 985 AudioControl Phase Coupled Activator Series Three DVD: Toshiba 4109X Laserdisc: Yamaha CDV-W901 5 CH Amp(for subs): Rotel RB-985 Single Cass Deck: HK TD-420 Dual Cass Deck: HK DC-520
  7. Mike, I don't know off hand what rating it is. It has been so long since I hooked them up. I'll have to check when I go home tonight. It's something I never paid attention to when I got it, just saw that I could hook up the lights to it and bought some adapters so I could run all 4 lights off it. It's got a switch on front so all come on at once. ------------------ Jerry CP RULZ ------------ Mains: KG 5.5 Rears: KG 3.5 Center: KLF-C7 Receiver: HK AVR-80 DD Processor: HK ADP-303 DTS Processor: Rotel RDA 985 AudioControl Phase Coupled Activator Series Three DVD: Toshiba 4109X Laserdisc: Yamaha CDV-W901 5 CH Amp(for subs): Rotel RB-985 Single Cass Deck: HK TD-420 Dual Cass Deck: HK DC-520
  8. I have neon lights on top of my entertainment center. I bought the 12 volt supply you mentioned at Radio Shack. It has one hookup,so I bought some y-adapters and have 4 lights running off the box. Have had them several years and have had no problems with them hooked up this way. ------------------ Jerry CP RULZ ------------ Mains: KG 5.5 Rears: KG 3.5 Center: KLF-C7 Receiver: HK AVR-80 DD Processor: HK ADP-303 DTS Processor: Rotel RDA 985 AudioControl Phase Coupled Activator Series Three DVD: Toshiba 4109X Laserdisc: Yamaha CDV-W901 5 CH Amp(for subs): Rotel RB-985 Single Cass Deck: HK TD-420 Dual Cass Deck: HK DC-520
  9. For everyone out there besides me that doesn't have DVD-A,it's still worth picking up some discs. Awhile back I got Metallica's Black album. I can still enjoy the DD 5.1 track on it until I upgrade. I just got the new Telarc recording of Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture done by Eric Kunzel & the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra. One side has the DVD-A stereo and surround mixes. The other side includes DTS,PCM stereo, and MP3. I've been listening to the DTS track. SIMPLY AMAZING!! The original Telarc recording was a landmark cd. But doesn't hold a candle to this new recording IMHO. Also includes tracks not on the original. If you have DTS,pick this up. You won't regret it. I ordered it on the Telarc website. ------------------ Jerry CP RULZ ------------ Mains: KG 5.5 Rears: KG 3.5 Center: KLF-C7 Receiver: HK AVR-80 DD Processor: HK ADP-303 DTS Processor: Rotel RDA 985 AudioControl Phase Coupled Activator Series Three DVD: Toshiba 4109X Laserdisc: Yamaha CDV-W901 5 CH Amp(for subs): Rotel RB-985 Single Cass Deck: HK TD-420 Dual Cass Deck: HK DC-520
  10. avman-to play sacd's on standard cd players, the discs have to be the Hybrid format, which consists of the 2 ch stereo layer. All of the Telarc releases are Hybrid. I learned the hard way. I bought a couple from Amazon that was advertised as Hybrid. But when I got them and put them in,they wouldn't even load. I could have sent them back, but decided to keep them until I upgrade to sacd. ------------------ Jerry CP RULZ ------------ Mains: KG 5.5 Rears: KG 3.5 Center: KLF-C7 Receiver: HK AVR-80 DD Processor: HK ADP-303 DTS Processor: Rotel RDA 985 AudioControl Phase Coupled Activator Series Three DVD: Toshiba 4109X Laserdisc: Yamaha CDV-W901 5 CH Amp(for subs): Rotel RB-985 Single Cass Deck: HK TD-420 Dual Cass Deck: HK DC-520
  11. Doug, your comment about switching speaker setting to small makes me think twice about new receivers.I always get confused on how people have things setup. My HK AVR 80 has 6 CH direct inputs,so when I'm watching movies,it bypasses all processing inside. I've been playing around with my system since adding the KG 5.5's and C7. In the setup menu, I switch the subwoofer to off, which throws bass back into mains. An LFE signal still goes to subs. There are so many things to look at! beemer, I agree to try them out to see if they appeal to you in your environment. When setting up systems for friends, the first thing I do with the sub is turn the crossover setting all the way down. This will give you more punch without having the walls vibrating and rumbling. That's why I doubt I'll ever buy a powered sub. Have a good box made and have a your own crossover setup. ------------------ Jerry CP RULZ ------------ Mains: KG 5.5 Rears: KG 3.5 Center: KLF-C7 Receiver: HK AVR-80 DD Processor: HK ADP-303 DTS Processor: Rotel RDA 985 AudioControl Phase Coupled Activator Series Three DVD: Toshiba 4109X Laserdisc: Yamaha CDV-W901 5 CH Amp(for subs): Rotel RB-985 Single Cass Deck: HK TD-420 Dual Cass Deck: HK DC-520
  12. Harman Kardon has always been top notch in my book! The new 8000 has got the THX certification,so that says alot. If I'm correct, they haven't had any certified since the AVR 80 several years ago. And that is a hell of a receiver! ------------------ Jerry CP RULZ ------------ Mains: KG 5.5 Rears: KG 3.5 Center: KLF-C7 Receiver: HK AVR-80 DD Processor: HK ADP-303 DTS Processor: Rotel RDA 985 AudioControl Phase Coupled Activator Series Three DVD: Toshiba 4109X Laserdisc: Yamaha CDV-W901 5 CH Amp(for subs): Rotel RB-985 Single Cass Deck: HK TD-420 Dual Cass Deck: HK DC-520
  13. Thats me! The coffin man! Yeah, the 27" tv looks strange in that big. I plan on having the new Toshiba 42" TheaterWide this spring. It's amazing how well HK and Klipsch goes together. 14. After getting my speakers replaced with all Klipsch,I took some pics of the whole entertainment center. It was custom built to my specs. It was designed to handle future components and a 40" TheaterWide Toshiba. Since they quit making them, I discovered that the new 42" model will fit. ------------------ Jerry CP RULZ ------------ Mains: KG 5.5 Rears: KG 3.5 Center: KLF-C7 Receiver: HK AVR-80 DD Processor: HK ADP-303 DTS Processor: Rotel RDA 985 AudioControl Phase Coupled Activator Series Three DVD: Toshiba 4109X Laserdisc: Yamaha CDV-W901 5 CH Amp(for subs): Rotel RB-985 Single Cass Deck: HK TD-420 Dual Cass Deck: HK DC-520
  15. I was just wondering what the deal is with the C7's? Did Klipsch dump a big load to distributers or what? There's a ton of them on ebay for around the $300 range. Considering they retailed for $600,I was curious why so many are popping up on bid sites for such low costs. I have one coming, and might but another in a couple of months. That way when I'm ready to upgrade to 6.1, I'll have the extra speaker already. ------------------ Jerry CP RULZ
  16. I live in a trailer,so have a small HT area as well. From the back of couch to wall is less than 3 ft. The rear speakers are against the walls in corners. Right now they are a pair of JBL floorstanding speakers. But within the next week or so,I'm moving my KG 3.5's to surrounds. Can't wait to horns all the way around! ------------------ Jerry CP RULZ
  17. Thanks! I imagine as time passes, there will be more options available. I might upgrade receiver later in year, and will keep my eye open on Sony and others. Hopefully Harmon Kardon comes out with something. I love HK and would hate to go with anything else. But I will keep options open. ------------------ Jerry CP RULZ
  18. Carl, have you ever tried turning your surrounds in toward each other? I see you have them toed in. Thats how I did mine to start. But tried different methods. And found having them behind you a couple of feet and pointing at each other, rather than the listener, produced a better result. If you haven't, try it. Get the Video essential set-up disc, and adjust the speakers levels and see what you think. ------------------ Jerry CP RULZ
  19. I'm not familiar with the MonsterBass 400 Interconnects. But, most typically, when you hook up a sub, you use the coaxial cables with RCA ends. From sub-out to the sub. It sends the signal before it is powered. If it is a custom built sub (like mine), I go from sub-out to the amp using coaxial. Then from the amplifaction, the powered signal travels to sub via speake wire. The heavier the gauge, the better. I have all 12 gauge in my system. I have a friend that has and old pair of Ohm's that he has 10 gauge wire. Pretty hefty stuff! To help you out, would recommend the Monster hookup. In my personal experience,2 coaxial cables butted together won't hurt any. Got to local Radio Shack and get Female/Female adapter. This will allow you to butt to cables together. ------------------ Jerry CP RULZ
  20. Correct, you have to use a Optical or Coaxial digital cable for the DD & DTS signal. These surround formats encode the channels into one digital bitstream to be transferred to the processor to be decoded. From everything I've read in magazines, use the coaxial digital cable if your player has it. In the early days of DD, they always talked about optical. But after time, they claimed that coaxial digital is better. Even though many dvd players have onboard DD decoding, I wouldn't use it. The digital-to-analog converters are most often better in receivers and stand alone processors than the player. ------------------ Jerry CP RULZ
  21. Does anyone out there have both DVD-A & SACD? If so,how do you ahev them hooked up? Considering most receviers only have one set up 6 CH inputs. Until they have players that decode both, or have a 6 CH input to bypass another processor, I can't see how anybody could have both. Like I have my DTS bypassing through my DD processor before my receiver. ------------------ Jerry CP RULZ
  22. The plugs you are talking about, are they attached to the bare wire. They make what they call Banana plugs to hook wire to. This allows for easy hookups. That way,if you ever need to unhook the system for anything, it saves a lot of time and hassle. Some of the older cheap speakers had cables with plugs that ran inside the speaker to a small power unit. Many new speakers have amps built-in,so you run cable, rather than speaker wire, from receiver to speaker. This is best if there is a great distance to travel. ------------------ Jerry CP RULZ
  23. A lot depends on what you are listening to. I have always found Paradigm speakers to be kick-*** for home theater. But when it comes to music enjoyment, they SUCK! I have yet to demo Klipsch Reference series, but have heard & read many good things. ------------------ Jerry CP RULZ
  24. I've always assumed that most receivers had level controls for each speaker independently. My HK AVR80 does. Goes from -10db to +10db. I was just messing with it the other day to push the subs a little more. With the seperates I have, there are several ways for me to adjust bass. ------------------ Jerry CP RULZ
  25. PointSource-we'll have to hook up. I live down in Van Wert. So we aren't too far apart. Very interested in hearing other's systems. ------------------ Jerry CP RULZ
