  1. Survive...... finish 2 preamps, possibly build a new set of speakers. Maybe build a 300b amp. Maybe. Work on, and actually use my former money pit Jeep. Do the 400 things around the house I have not done after doing the previous 500 that I, yes, have actually done. It never ends.
  2. I tried the magic eraser trick to clean the stylus and it definitely made a difference. I listened to several records this morning and had better results. Not perfect, but better. I used a dry microfiber on the records before I played them as well. It took care of the dust on the surface, but I’m not sure how far down into the grooves these get. I probably need to invest in a good record cleaning device and a brush for the stylus. I also watched a few videos on setting up and adjusting a deck. The tone arm on this deck is pretty basic. The adjustments can be made, just not in fine increments as far as I can tell. I will keep reading and try to get the most out of this deck, but I need to remember that I bought this to see if I liked vinyl, not as the only player I will ever own. I do like it, so I need to start researching the features and prices of what is out there. Maybe VPi will take a kidney as payment?
  3. Ok, that is gone. The cartridge is a Ortofon om5e. It was installed at the factory and is supposed to be adjusted (allegedly). I may try to adjust by ear but I need to familiarize myself with the potential adjustments and methods of gauging. It is a stand alone preamp that can be set for either MM or MC. The om5e is a MM cartridge, the pre is set for MM. it is never that easy for me. Thanks for the replies. I will do some searching.
  4. I have had a collection of Vinyl that I had for years, but have not had a functional turntable for at least a decade. I decided it was time to put the vinyl to use and picked up a Pro-ject elemental turntable. It gets good reviews and I got a good deal on it new from partsconnexion. Well that was several months ago and it had sat ever since. Over the holidays I finally ordered a pro-ject phono box preamp so could actually get this setup spinning (sorry). The first vinyl I listened to was Miles Davis live evil, it sounded pretty good. I have been exclusively cd for ever because I could not stand the added noise of vinyl, but this sounded really good. There is really something to the sound. I threw on Traffic and it sounded good, but not like the CD. There is some detail there, but there is a little distortion. I attributed this to the record being as old as I am. I ordered a couple of brand new records to really check this setup out. I ordered two records who’s cd sibling are in the player often so I am familiar. The first is a single that has four songs. It contains a track with a guitar section that I really enjoy. It was unlistenable on the vinyl. It was as if I had kicked on a distortion pedal. It was that bad. The next night I played the other new record. It is a 180 gram pressing, which I did not know when I ordered it, but it makes sense because the cd version is hd. This sounded ok, but again there is just too much distortion. Some elements of the songs sound great, while others sound terrible. I know this is a “budget” deck, but I did not expect distorted sound. I have thought about upgrading the cart, but I’m not sure how far I want to go upgrading this one before I should have just upgraded the whole deck. I’m a little torn because I hear the potential that is there. Am I expecting too much out of this setup? I know there are at least a few vinyl gurus here that might have some thoughts.
  5. This is what I use to trim the edges. It cuts flush and then the edge requires light sanding. When cutting across the grain though, do not end the cut at the end of the panel. Start at both ends and finish in the middle. Certain species like to tear at the end of the cut down the grain. When cutting with the grain it won’t matter. I vote for tung oil as well. You have better control over the luster. If you are worried about someone setting a drink on your beautiful completed speakers I would invite that person to enjoy viewing them from outside looking through a window. Then lock the door.
  6. I think they look great! Any build information, or photos? Are you going to stain, veneer or paint? Plans for drivers and networks?
  7. @Marvel Google found these for me a few days ago when I began to hatch this plan. The description is similar to what you described. They look cool, but they are tall. Either way a nice looking project.
  8. I too, could not pass up the price of a pair of these. I do not own Cornwall’s so I will probably be building a cab for these. I am thinking something like with a similar volume to a Cornscala cab that houses only the woofer. I am hoping to be able to alter the shape of the cab a little to push these into a smaller footprint and bring the heil closer to ear height. (I need to do a ton of reading, I know there is more to it than just internal volume, but any advice would be appreciated.) I was lucky enough to be able to acquire some ess amt monitors several years ago that needed a few minor repairs to be perfect. That project spawned my interest in diy, and I have building ever since. These speakers have been seeing daily use in some form in our house for as long as we have owned them. The heil really is special. Interesting note about the ess design. The heil is “housed” on top of a TL cabinet in a separated enclosure. Oxblood speaker fabric hides the Heils. The top enclosure is open on the sides, the front and the back. The top directly above the heil is closed off with hardboard panel. I am curious if this top panel was used to control the dispersion, or if it was used because the designer knew someone would be unable to resist placing a drink on top of these speakers while dancing the night away.
  9. I think the price is fair considering these will protect your RCAs grime dust and smoke. However, the fact that these will protect your RCAs from fat, is simply priceless.
  10. They do sound good. So far I like them better than the de-120s. The Daytona are a little less harsh at points and add some three dimensionality to some passages. I was running the de-120s at -3dbs, so far I am running these at full speed. I need to build some proper mounts and align them with the mid diaphragm, but so far these are great.
  11. Impatiently awaiting the next couple installments!
  12. @codewritinfool and @Hornographic All of the parts have been delivered to their new owners in the STL area. I got to meet codewritinfool and hornohraphic when I delivers the parts. Super nice guys. It’s great to get a chance to meet other forum members in person. Pleas be be sure to post some pictures of your projects.
  13. Those look perfect! Any plans to do any midrange horns? Is it even possible with your tooling? please say yes.
  14. I finally got around to ordering a pair of these. I wish I had ordered them while they were on sale. They should be here Friday so I should have some impressions over the weekend.
  15. @joessportster Joe, I saw your thread this morning. If I wasn’t in preamp hell right now I would consider them. That’s a great deal!
  16. One of these days I need to try some big power on my LS clones. At a couple hundred watts you may be able to hear them in STL!
  17. Thank you! I definitely did not want to hide that fact that these were horns. All the lines and curves that make up the different horns are visually appealing. I did not want to hide the mechanics of the design.
  18. All the parts are sold! good luck to the buyers with their projects.
  19. The PD-5VH and CT-125 tweeters have been sold. the K401s, baffles and A-4500 networks are still available. thanks.
  20. I happened upon that sale looking for the eclipse crossover for my my mint AMT-1s. I have always wanted to build something that utilizes the great heil. Because they really are great, or amazing. I think builders have had issues mating these to a bass bin that will do them justice. Hmmmm.
