  1. will pair nicely with your heresys'. it's an easily tweakable amp if you so choose. changing power cord, interconnects & speaker cables can produce great improvements too. have fun & be sure to keep us in the loop with your impressions
  2. I had the a35's hooked to a 15watt marantz ss & was real nice. then a friend came over with his musical paradise 301 & those little guys jumped to life like I'd never heard before. been hooked on tubes ever since.
  3. I was unaware that there are 3different crites tweeters. I'll have to look deeper into how they differ from each other. I just want to find out if anyone is using something other than the crites or b&c drivers & what their impressions are
  4. I know I want to use the fastrac hf horn but was wondering if anyone has used driver other than b&c & what the results were I don't like the reviews of the crites tweeters. many people are describing tham as too sharp. they'll be working with fastrac cornwall horn & a55g drivers
  5. I agree with your critera. then definitely dynaco a50 should be on the list somewhere
  6. the rough spot down the throat I would sand down but I'm not sure if there would be any gain in sound quality from smoothing the inner surface of the horn; that being said, if there is something to be gained then make sure to put the same finish on all the horns to avoid an imbalance. there's no need to make any changes to the crossovers cause you're not actually changing anything. you probably would have to make a change if you were switching from cast metal to plastic horns or vice versa
  7. I hope they mean top 10 easiest speakers to sell on ebay! the kids love the white cones of the ns-10 almost as much as the orange rubber surrounds of cervin vegas. or sansui's "the more speakers we can jam into a cabinet the better" philosophy with the sp5000 & up models. I think both marantz & jbl experimented with painting their cabinets bright blue for a couple of years. if they mean great sounding vintage speakers where is anything from tannoy with the dual concentric drivers? the legendary pioneer hpm 100's, sanus faber monitors & I bet I'm missing quite a few others. sorry, not trying to be a hater but even now I'm surprised how many vintage speakers are still popular from gimick or slick advertising from back in the day that still lives on (realistic mach l), but I will be the first to admid I've also heard many vintage speakers that blew me away with their dynamics & sound quality. magnepan mglll, cornwall, lascalla, altec model 19, IMF tls80, tannoy monitor gold 15" & a couple others that I can't remember their name or models
  8. I heard a jazz quartet in a 500 seat hall designed for non amplifed shows & it was amazing, like nothing I've ever heard before. I really do need to get down to our symphony to experience a full orchestra in its intended environment
  9. I see no need to grind down the ridge inside the horn. look how the horn mounts to the back side of the motorboard, the horn sides are about 45* angle but hit the motor board cutout which is now a 90* angle. I would think that has more potential to interfere with the soundwave than the tiny ridge from assembling the horn
  10. I'm not familiar with your amp but I'm not sure if you can put el34's in place of kt88's. you can usually swap kt100's for 88's or if amp runs on el34's you can switch to 6L6. check with the manufacturer to see what other tube types are interchangeable without having to do any mods to the amp
  11. many times it's not the cable but the power supply of the pc that is "dirtying" the signal. check out musical paradise mp-u1 I see a few others have mentioned the usb regen already
  12. what's your initial impression of the new drivers? slight or big difference or improvement on the sound compared to the k55v's? I'm thinking of using the a55g in my cornscalla build
  13. I highly suggest going to your local audio store & have a listen to a few different amps on the same pair of speakers & bring some of your favourite lp's/cd's with you. you want to get a feel of the different tube types & how they differ from one another. when you know what tube type you like then you can start comparing amps.
  14. I'm going to guess your office/listening area isn't bigger than 12x20 so a 10wpc tube amp is plenty. klipsch speakers are so efficient they need very little tube power to drive them. might I suggest looking into musical paradise mp-301 (6.5 wpc). it uses 6L6 or el34 power tubes & I personally think it has a much better sound than the couple of yaquin amps I've heard
  15. I know exactly what you mean by compromise, my listening room is supposed to be the dining room with no back wall, just open into the family room. the mirror is easy enough to take down when listening put back up when done. measurements are a good starting point but like a few others said earlier trust how you like the sound. sit & listen to one of your reference songs with the window exposed then again covered. the sound bounces off drywall on one side at a different speed than off glass (forgive my non-expert simple description) making the first reflections hit your ears at different times causing an imbalance from the listening position. careful adding extra layers cause it could "deaden" the room. I love how panels in the first reflection position make the soundstage so much wider
  16. 4 pages of replies & I can't believe no one has said anything about the big mirror above the audio rack. take it down & have a listen, I guarantee your perception of vocals will change. while you're at it remove the two glass top tables on the wall with the window. any glass surface in the room will cause havoc with reflections. also try an experiment with 1 panel (diffuser/absorbition combo) behind the audio rack. my room is similar to yours & that panel really made an improvement in depth of soundstage & vocals seem to fill the wall all the way up to the ceiling. hanging a heavy blanket to block the window while listening to music will also help big time
  17. nice. looks just like what's in the cornwall 1's. better news for me is uline has a warehouse 20 mins away from me
  18. I'm building a pair of cornscallas is there something better than roxul from big box store?
  19. what is the proper material to line the inside of the cabinets?
  20. thanks endo. I'm going to meet with a cabinet builder who's also an audiophile. he recommends using a certain plywood for the cabinet (to get the stiffness & density needed) & then doing a veneer of my choice for the finished look I'm after I'll keep you all posted on my progress
  21. I'm actually planning to build cornwalls from the ground up. I've decided not to modify or molest the original cornwall 1's. do you think hardwood maple 3/4" plywood could be a good substitute for baltic birtch? I can get cabinet grade here in Canada real easy. or mdf with veneer?
  22. is that why they switched to mdf? no voids, more consistent quality control & less expensive? even any of us spending extra for a couple sheets of baltic birtch ply can't be assured there won't be unacceptable voids if the factory was having those exact problems.
  23. are all klipsch cabinets made from baltic birtch? why?
  24. alot of japaneese gear found its way into the USA via military personnel stationed overseas. most of this gear was made for the us voltage, others had a us/europe voltage switch. alot of the gear had different names or model #'s or colour than what was exported to the US market & because of that there is little to no info on that gear
  25. rectifers do make a difference in the sound. they shouldn't but they do. my mp dac2 has a switch to allow me to use 5 or 6 watt rectifers. I went to a guy in town & spent about $80 for 6 different ones, sylvania, rca, rogers, marconni. short, tall, fat, skinny. each has a different quality to the bottom end (different degrees of loose to tight) the ones I liked in my system I took to a friends place who has the same dac & the sound was totally different. different amps, speakers, room size...they'll all make a difference. buy a bunch & experiment, that's the fun of tube rolling. the ones you don't like, resell or trade with a friend for something different.
