InVeNtOR wrote, "i also would like to know why people think "post count" = intelligence. . . . i personally believe high posts counts means you like to talk to people on here, not your constantly giving sound advice." I agree with you about the high post count. I once responded to a newbie Khorn owner's question about a squawker that didn't squawk (If interested, the full reply is attached as a pdf). A self-appointed expert (who shall remain nameless) replied as follows: " DizRotus can you lighten up with the Bob Crite's endorsements........I personally like Bob....but you tend to have a degrading tone in your posts...I seen a lot of things over the last 8500 posts...stick around and you will know what I mean. AND, know one ever said the squawker was the only thing not working.....the HF fuses should be checked before we start recommending crossover swaps" I mean, criticizing a recommendation to consult Bob Crites. How self-important can one be? I ignored the bloviating bore.
  2. Please excuse my ignorance. I don't watch "Storage Wars," so I don't know how these things work. Did your brother-in-law know the contents prior to bidding? I certainly hope so. That's a lot of money to pay for what could be a locked storage unit full of dirty laundry, or worse. In any case, its a great score for you on the speaker and the bother-in-law.
  3. IMHO, the best digital beats the best analog. The controversy is stoked by the reality that a lot of vinyl recordings are very good, while a lot of digital recordings are very bad. Again, IMHO, what keeps good vinyl around is the fact that many of the performances and recordings were excellent and they can only be found on vinyl. If I had a vinyl pressing (or analog tape) of such a performance/recording, I would play it back on the best analog equipment available and preserve it in the best digital format available. As indicated by Artto's excellent post, there's nothing inherently superior about dragging a tiny diamond over bumpy plastic and playing it back through RIAA equalization. At its best, it deteriorates each time you play it. At least excellent vinyl recordings start great and then deteriorate. Bad performances, poorly recorded in a compressed digital format start out bad and stay that way. A metaphor comes to mind. An excellent recording of an excellent performance of great music is more enjoyable if played through a clock radio than a poor (compressed) recording of a poor performance of inferior music played through one of the the absolute best audio reproduction systems, for example, Artto's. Obviously, the best scenario is an excellent recording of an excellent performance of excellent music played back through Artto's excellent system in his optimized listening space (but that's a whole other topic). The best digital or the best analog will both sound excellent, at first. Over time, the analog, whether vinyl or magnetic tape, will deteriorate. Nonetheless, reasonable people will continue to fan the analog versus digital debate. It's fair to like what you like. I hope we can agree that the message (the music) is more important than the medium (vinyl vs digital, tube vs SS, zip cord vs boutique wire, Klipsch vs Bose, etc.) and just enjoy good music, whatever you define that to be. It's not the paper or the ink that make Lincoln's Gettysburg Address memorable, it's the content.

"many moons ago i posted an ad from ebay, i believe, and the original author was none too happy that i did. long and short, i apologized and the matter was settled between the two parties, me and him......UNTIL a fellow forum member got involved and blew it out of proportion. something that was none of his business......just saying." Was the eBay seller upset that you posted the eBay ad? If so, I fail to see why an eBay seller would be upset about the additional exposure. Perhaps I'm totally misunderstanding the scenario.
  5. " . . . through the jokes." Don't you just love auto-misspell?
  6. With the plenum removed from the dog house, removal of the accessible drivers would permit access to the front of the other drivers through the holes.
  7. " what part of I WANT THEM doesn't he understand" Russ- I feel your pain. On a Friday evening I replied to a post by a Forum member (I'd personally met him earlier) who was selling Cornwalls. I said, "I'll take them." I was on my way out the door to run the concession stand at my son's high school football game. I figured we'd conclude the deal when I got home. When I got home, I was surprised to find out my forum "friend" sold them to another Forum member. In this case, the OP was not a Forum regular. "I want them" was not interpreted as accepting his offer. The temptation of Craigslist followers in a bidding war was too much to resist. In a strange coincidence, some time later I spent a pleasant evening with the Forum member who bought the Cornwalls. It all worked out for the best, as I bought La Scalas from Michael Colter instead. As my late mother used to say, "If it's right it'll work out. If it didn't work out, it wasn't right." ON ANOTHER NOTE Thanks again for the badges. My son is still enjoying the Heresy pair I gave him for his graduation from George Washington U. Now he wears a badge as a D.C. police officer. He was probably safer while in Afghanistan.

  9. Don't forget Clarence. He was a piece of work.
  10. Apparently not. In my opinion, it's best to ignore the knuckleheads. They soon get bored and slither away. Or, you could personally reply to each immature and ignorant post, thus providing the miscreant a larger platform from which to chest thump and spew bile. It's said, "Ignorance is bliss." If that's true, if we ignore the ignorant, may we all enjoy bliss.
  11. "The LaScala type cabinet in the first post was built out of 9-ply oak in 1978 and was vented about ten years ago." Dennis, Am I correct that the La Scala was vented using a modified K43 and ports like those in the bass reflex mod you designed? If that's not correct, how was it vented before, and will the PPSL unit be vented in the same manner? In any case, I look forward to the rest of your thread.
  12. +1 [y] Not to mention, it's behind Wal-Mart.
  13. You're correct. Have you started the car?
  14. As I type this, I'm enjoying Buffalo Springfiled, For What It's Worth, which is much more than FREE or $130.
  15. I know there can't be too many photos, especially when nudity is involved.
  16. The driver is 5". The CT125 next to the cube gives you a sense of the small size.
  17. A couple of weeks ago, an old friend from college (The "old" part is redundant. It’s like saying , “I saw an old Corvair.” Is there another kind?) GAVE me a pair of these vintage Auratone 5RC speakers, as well as a pair of Koss headphones. I immediately gave the phones to my son, who says they’re great. I didn’t pay attention to the model number on the Koss, just re-gifted them to my son. I had charged my friend $130 to repair some crappy mini-blinds (also redundant) in his office. When I returned the repaired blinds and took his check, he presented me with the speakers, the headphones and some CDs. I set the speakers aside and just now got around to putting power to them using an un-refurbished HK730. These little suckers are amazing. Naturally, I Googled “Auratone” and found what a windfall I’d received. The photo attached to this post is from the Google search. It shows how they hook together for easy transport. The photos attached to subsequent posts are the actual speakers. I guess it’s because it’s Sunday. I felt so guilty I went to PayPal and refunded the $130. I sent the following email: Dave, I've refunded your $130 via PayPal. Those little speakers are worth more than that. I don't know how I'll use them, but I love them; you can't have them back. Also, Ross likes the headphones.
  18. +1 The value must be calculated from the purchase price plus the cost to have a capable technician confirm their operating condition.
  19. I failed to mention that Claude is a professional photographer. I expect photos won't be a problem. Claude's avatar shows a few bricks in the wall.
  20. Free is possible. Less than $300 delivered is unlikely. Good luck.
  21. As I've said before, the 4 Speakerlab SKhorns (factory built, plywood, aluminum 350s and T-35s) used in a DJ biz in the 70s played so loud and clear the SPLs were dangerous. The SKs were 8 ohm, so 2 per channel created a 4 ohm load to the Dynaco 400, which put out 300 watts/channel into 4 ohms. One time a woman called to book a return engagement. When I quoted a price, she asked, "Does that include the drummer?" It was all I could do to convince her there had not been a live drummer the first time. She'd never before experienced that much horn loaded sound in such a relatively small space. In addition to accelerating my high frequency hearing loss, all that SS power regularly fried the voice coils of the T-35s. I could call EV on Monday and a new diaphragm and an invoice for $11.00 would arrive in time for the next weekend's gig. I mailed a lot of checks to 600 Cecil St., Buchanan, MI. Those were the days.
