  1. I believe someone else posted pics of LS with factory full grills a long time ago, back around the turn of the century. IIRC it was accepted that they were in fact factory. I can't remember who knew about them.
  2. Dave, remember that M-Audio card I sent you? It was made specifically for this dubbing of LPs to CD. Ever tried it? It really kicks butt on this deal.
  3. I'm the one who bought this back in 04. It's true what they say, Fisher 500-C makes FM sound like a nice CD. I didn't have it very long, had too much stuff and sold it. Sure was nice.
  4. >>> "I would select the amplifier based on sound quality rather than the rated watts." What he said. Watts are sort of a non-issue around here. Probably 99% of the time you'll be running a fraction of a watt through them. consider high quality low powered amps for the Corns.
  5. That's funny, I was reading your thread and wondering if you knew Mike. Now we know there's a set of LSI, Corns and Khorns on the island. I did something similar with an SI-5 on AA's, an ipod and a pair of Heresys. Sounded good and amazed the others. Also used a laptop for source in addition to it running a Skype video connection to a guy in the Bay area. Was using a wireless net connection, running off the laptop battery. No big deal, plugged it all in and it worke.
  6. I had some really nice snowflake Cherry veneer for a DBB Cornscala project a couple years ago. Some of it just didn't want to cut clean no matter what. I was using a metal straightedgeto clamp the veneer on a piece of hardboard like Masonite. I tried to do the router thing but had tear-out, the grain was sort of wavy. I ended up using Norton 3X 220 sandpaper wrapped on a piece of plywood about 8" long. re-clamped the veneer on the hardboard with about 1/32" edge sticking out, gently sanded the edge to get rid of the roughness. Not talking about sanding it down the whole 1/32", just enough to get rid of tyhe whiskers and stuff on the edges. came out good. This was raw veneer from Certainly Wood, I know nothing about working with the paper backed stuff.
  7. >>> "I don't know, but I believe if you throw enough money at something, you'll eventually convince yourself that it sounds better!" LOL, Perzackly.
  8. It's kind of like restoring a car, start with a decent car and the job gets done and and it gets done a lot sooner.
  9. Member Bob Crites has an excellent replacement cast frame woofer http://cgi.ebay.com/Replacement-Woofer-Klipsch-Khorn-Cornwall-Belle-Pair-/370361466984?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Speakers_Subwoofers&hash=item563b438068 for a pair
  10. I'd have been afraid to leave long enough to get a different car. I can hear it now " Well this nice man came in and offered me $50 for them, you can frind some others can't you?" AAAAARRRRRRGGGGHHHHH....
  11. his speakers are '84 vintage, does that call for the rectangular copper badges? I still have some of the pie-slice emblems reproduced as a forum project back around the turn of the century. They're free for the asking but you have to send me USPS Priority mail postage and a mailing label so all I have to do is drop them in an envelope and send. Let me know via PM if you're interested.
  12. $10???? how many micro-seconds did it take to the wallet out?
  13. can you post the serial numbers so we can see what year they are? this would determine which badges they use. do they have grills?
  14. Look around for a TEAC AL-700P digi-amp. it's 3 channel, I have a tube pre feeding a mini-box feeding a 700P feeding a pair of Khorns and center Belle. Sounds good to me. And inexpensive too.
  15. I have a piece of that cane cloth #4134 32" wide and 13' long. $50 plus shipping from 85308.
  16. If the woofers have been reconed they're probably hosed as far as original performance goes. I mean, who knows what parts were used? Not to worry though, Bob Crites of this forum has two replacement woofers that are specifically made to replace the K-33. In fact, it was only a few years ago that you could could buy new K-33 from Klipsch for a very reasonable price, I think the ones I bought in 2002 were about $150 apiece. Also, used ones come up on ebay all the time. Even see some advertised here in the Garage Sale sectioon from time to time.
  17. sootshe, you LS look great. A very nice job by you or your cabinet guy. Or both.
  18. I have some cane left over from the Oak Belle project. How much do you need? I think there's enough to do a set of Corns, maybe more. Let me know if you're interested and I'll dig it out and measure. It would be a friendly, forum member price, not like retail. Tom
  19. Will, The signal to the woofer goes through the bobbin wound inductor. this is normally a vertically standing inductor, looks like a coil of copper wire. This part is not usually a source of problems but if the circuit is open there will no sound from the woofer. The crossovers should be labeled on a metal plate, possibly will have a "AA" on them. What do you see? The serial number was on a printed label glued to the back. Can you see that? The serial number is often stamped into the wood on the back edge of the top panel, can you see it there?
  20. the solvent for lacquer is lacquer thinner, doesn't matter how old the lacquer is. It re-dissolves easily. I used the stripper brushes available at HD, Lowes and similar places. If your wood is an open grain speciesyou might a pretty aggressive brush to dig the lacquer iout of the grain. Any brush, test it first to verify that it's not dissolved by the solvent/stripper in question.
  21. Don't start pulling it out till you verify it's bad. Find the wire that comes out of the lower section. Follow it to the crossover, loosen one of the screws a little, pull the wire off and test for resistance between the two wires. There should be continuity and about 4 Ohms resistance. If it's open, no continuity, there's likely a problem with the big woofer in the bottom section. There are replacements available at a very reasonable cost. Try it, come back and tell us what you found.. Will, where are you located?
  22. LS came with risers? Maybe it's old age but I don't recall that.
  23. >>> Price is not always an indicator of sound quality. Seems to a typo in the above. I think it was supposed to be "Price is frequently not an indicator of sound quality."
  24. Dude, you are doing some seriously nice work. And a lot of it too. What is the wood?
