  1. Well, it's 11 pm on a saturday night. I'm sitting in the backyard with citronella torches aglow, I just got through listening to Miles Davis "Miles Kind of Blue".... Good stuff....my friends. Before I came in to refresh myself, I switched to my local NPR station which carries "Jazz with Bob Parlocha" in which "Bob" is playing some crazy sounding mainstream stuff. Though, as i'm typing this, he has put on some Cannonball Adderly. So....outside I must go... Enjoy your music, my friends. Regards, John.
  2. Forever, if you don't overdrive them or expose them to extreme climactic conditions. Some of the best loudspeakers I own, are 30 years + old. They just don't make them all like they used to. IMO. Regards, John.
  3. I hear what your saying. It appears sort of scandalist, doesn't it? Though...it seems to me that it has to be. I guess, that in order for any corporation to succeed and grow in todays' marketplace, they need a competitive edge. (Thus multi-million dollar advertising campains and glamorized marketing tecniques) Par for the course, I say. Tagging a particular production line as reference or Monitor seems to be all too commercial and common, but if it keeps this great company afloat, then i'm all for it. The company has changed gears, but it still remains...so what are you gonna do? Fred has alot of business sense and his partners have a consistently solid background with decent quarterly profits. Big business on the rise. IMHO, From every manufacture...the "flagship" models seem to offer the most material related expenditures as opposed to their second or third series counterparts.FWIW. (Though that may vary given the advent and implementation of newer, cheaper technology) IMO. Initilizing a custumer base and expanding upon it until the market subsides is the growing trend. I think that is where "milkin' it" and trimmimg production overhead comes into play. Take a good, reasonable afforable production piece and run with it until it turns a bad quarter, then dump it. Granted, that isn't nessisarily any one companys' business model, it sure seems to fit the growing trend from a consumers perspective. Just my 2 1/2 cents. Enjoy your music at whatever cost..... I love my Klipsch! Regards, John.
  4. Does anyone know what the difference is between the SW-8 series 1 and series 2 subwoofers? Regards, John.
  5. Great posts, John. Excellent answers, gentlemen... On a side note... This is where my belief in the benefits of bi-wiring come into play. Please. Correct me if i'm wrong. Back EMF not returned or seen through the HF section of a seperated network allows for less distortion thus giving heightened clarity with upper level harmonic information not being lost or distorted....basically. Among other theoreticals, this is what I consider to be viable proof of bi-wiring benefits. Am I nuts, or is there something to that? Regards, John.
  6. Great story..though I don't like beer very much. It is so true on many levels. Thanks. Substitute beer for Rum-n-Coke and then I can relate completely. Regards, John. P.S. I like my golf balls. (par for the course) One of them is going to be 13 on Monday. God...Do I feel old. Is 32 considered..old?
  7. Hey Gil. Looks like we posted at the same time. Though, since i'm a slow typist (45 WPM), I think you beat me to the chase. I support what Gil said......except for the related issue of the Forte2 being the best direct radiator. Ha. I must go with the Forte 1 on that issue. Regards, John.
  8. I wouldn't worry about cabinet placement but like Bill said, Keep them at least a foot from the rear wall. So, if that means removing the cabinet backs as they appear behind the enclosures then I would do so if it wouldn't compromise the intregrity of the cabinet your putting them in. Compared to Khorns.......well it's kinda like apples and oranges. There is something to be said about the realiskm of the bass articulation that a folded horn can reproduce. It's uncanny. And, you would be surprised at the amount of valuble information thats available below 4000Hz. The key word here being .....undertones. It's all about the harmonics. Regards, John.
  9. Craig- I got it from a local guy, whom I have been dealing with for a couple of years, now. He's been repairing stereo gear for 30+ years and does a great job, but he refuses to do any "mods" what-so-ever. Heh.... I love my new garage. Just wish I had room for at least ONE car in there. I'll keep a close eye on it, brother. Really don't want to see it self-destruct before I really get a chance to enjoy it. Regards, John.
  10. TS- Thanks again. I'll use extreme caution. I haven't set it up, yet. Tommorrow, after work, I was going to mess around and hook her up to a few old Klipsch. I have a few tube offerings to compare it with. My running tube gear consists of a Jolida 202A, Lafayette LR800, Heathkit AA-32, Don McGohan (M-G) WA-325, Stromburg Carlson Signet 22, and Signet 33. It should be interesting. I'm excited. I would have set it all up tonight, but I had to go a 2nd job after I came home from my 1st one. You know.....one of those days. Mind awake, body beat. Regards, John
  11. Gil- I appreciate the assistance. That's all I was getting, too. Today is my lucky day, though. Looks like I got my answer. Mr. TS Lamp Works- Thank you very much. That is what I like to hear. Good stuff. My '57 Khorns are gonna love it. Yeah. I'm very glad to get this kind of insight. It was more than I could have hoped for. Thanks again. It's a beautiful piece, with it's tan and gold bakelight knobs and it's "Scott Stereomaster gold" faceplate. (is that where Scott got it's signiture color from?) Ha Ha Cleanest chassis i've seen with not a dent or scratch to be found, either inside or out. I was happy to find that 5 of the 6 12ax7s are Mullards. Joy... Only 2 little issues with it. It has a modified on/off toggle switch and it's missing one gold piece of trim of the top of the faceplate. The switch doesn't bother me and the trim is replaceable, so i'm good to go. About destroying it by driving it without internal modification..... I do understand conceptually why this is an issue, but if it was brought up slowly on a variac and benchtested by a tech for 3 hours, then isn't it safe to assume it's "ready for action", so to speak? Just curious. I do plan on a rebuild, but it won't be right away. Regards, John
  12. Fini..... Yeah..... Hurrah.... ..... ..... What this place needs is a good round of you, me, Clu, and BBB. Remember them 'ole days? Sigh... Demented, deranged, denatured, denotative, connotative, correlated, congested, and all the fun stuff in between. After all, it's all about the context, right? Given each individuals' differing views, is it not true that most anything can be misconstrued if taken out of context? Anything..... Or for that matter, anything can be seen from multiple facets given the nature of context that is implied or represented. IMHO. It really comes down to "knowing" the individual and where they are coming from, given their particular disposition. Only then can we honestly comprehend the true nature of their words or actions. Just a thought. Seems to me, that most people are well aware of the nature in which they respond to a post, blatent or otherwise. How couldn't they be? It's not like we don't have time to re-think our responses prior to pushing the submit button. Real life doesn't afford us that luxury. Why shouldn't we attempt to correct our interpersonal shortcomings when given the opportunity to in a place such as this? I, for one, will be the first to admit that i'm no angel. But....I make a great attempt to be as civil and personable as possible when given the opportunity. Let's keep this place civil so that we may continue to patronize it. Our Klipsch BB is an oasis of friendship and knowledge that has endured longer than most and can continue to thrive if stick together. Regards, John.
  13. Hello all, I just picked up a beautiful old Bell amp today and i'm having trouble finding any information on it. Stereophonic High Fidelity Amplifier Model 3DT Bell Sound Systems Inc. Tube compliment; 6- 12ax7a. 4- 6v6gt 1- 5u4g Anybody familiar with it? Regards, John.
  14. I think the Fortes offer up the best bang for the buck. IMHO. The Quartet, Fortes, Forte2, Chorus, and Chorus2 are all some incredible speakers and should definately be considered. I own them all and definately get the most musical satisfaction, overall, from the Forte 1s. (though, it really becomes dependant on the front end your using) Secondarily, I think KG 4.5s and Cornwalls do some amazing things. Otherwise.... KG-4 SB-3 KSF-10.5 They all have attributes which shouldn't be overlooked. That being said, I'm currently running a Reference 7, 7 channel HT and a pair of '57 Khorns in 12x15 room. That, IMO, is the best of both worlds if your budget could allow. Good luck with your quest for great audio. Regards, John.
  15. Hello my fellow music lovers. During these warm summer months, I enjoy setting up various 2 channel rigs in my backyard. Nothing crazy and elaborate, mind you, just an old stereo, turntable, and a pair of speakers. I like to see what various combinations will sound like in an outdoor venue. Plus, I really dig my backyard. I often set the stereo and turntable on my deck with the speakers on the ground.(always on stands of some sorts) Then I set up my camp chair in the sweet spot and proceed to kick out the jams. Generally, it is an evening event for me. With sunset being a starting point and starlight finishing it off. I guess it's just the right atmosphere for me to really appreciate some good tunes. My back yard has a surrounding 30' tall canopy of trees, that offer up a large opening for me in the center. (very nice for stargazing) I also enjoy watching a local family of bats have their evening meal as I spin some vinyl. Cheap entertainment..Ha Ha. It's something else. They swoop entirely too close to me as Wynton M, Cannonball, or whoever play their thing. They seem to move in concert with whatever i'm playing. It's kinda freaky, but neat at the same time. Almost like they feel the beat and move in harmony to it. Huh... I always enjoy it....but my girlfriends don't ever seem to care for it...... Go figure Ha Ha Ha Do any of you drag a system outside for fun and if so, what gear do you use? Regards, John
  16. Party at Craigs. I've been trying to make it over there for the last year and a half. heh... Regards, John P.S. I also, hear he has all the good stuff. Man....I wish I had some.
  17. Harmonic Synthesis As the richness and quality of a musical note depend only on the proportions in which different harmonics enter, it will be clear that the blending of harmonics to make a good musical tone is as important as the newspaper advertisements tell us that the blending of teas and tobaccos is. Let us then try to discover the art of making our musical instruments blend their own harmonics in such a way as to give us the particular quality of tone that our musical taste demands. Sir James Jeans. (1937) Regards, John.
  18. Diana Kralll or Ella Fitzgerald. They melt my soul and liquefy my innards. Juicy, baby....... Regards, John.
  19. Ha Ha... Those of us in the know, have a pretty good idea where Fini is. He he he..... I suspect he's some where towards the end. But one never can tell. I, on the other hand, am right here half in the bag from a good night out at the local pub. A rarity for me...... 6 rum and cokes and a shot of Jack, later, have put me in a rare mood. Here's a couple of questions that i'm sick of hearing..... 1. Ohhh my.....does it get even bigger? 2. Are you on Enzyte(sp) ? 3. So...if you wear size 13's, does that directly relate to the size of your *****? 4. Can you please be gentle? Ahhhhhhhh...... To be a thirty year old with the knowledge and skill to satisify most curiosities. Good times.... good times.... Ha Ha Ha Ha..... eat your heart out, you old farts. J/K.....mostly.. REgards, John, the unquestionable man about town in these parts. Post Script: Hi Clu.....How do you do? Post, Post script: Hi Fini.....How do YOU do? Post, post, post script: Hi BBB..... what the hell is your real name? Ha Ha Ha Ha Send me a PM, i'm been wondering that for the past couple of years? We should get together and party... as it were.....
  20. Ha Ha Ha Good one, Trey.... My sentiments exactly. I have Khorns, Cornwalls, and RF7s in a 12x15 room. Sounds great. IMO. The key here was treating the room acoustically. In such a small space, early 2nd and 3rd order reflections coupled with standing waves are a primary concern. I suggest tapestries and/or acoustical panels for the wall that will be in front of the speakers. Also, treating the walls immediately adjacent to each speaker will greatly improve imaging. Putting plants in the corners can help keep the bass from loading up in each corner. If there is a drop ceiling, replace the existing panels with an acoustically superior panel or "floating ceiling" for better results, yet. If no drop ceiling exists, consider implementing one. Either way, they should sound great. Enjoy. Regards, John.
  21. Hey fellas! You that know me, already know that I could carry on about cable theory and fact until the cows come home, but....I won't. Not today. What I will say, though, is 2 ten dollar words. Dialectric. Termination. There ya go. You guys can chew on that for a bit. Ha Ha. Now, somebody owes me 20 bucks. BTW. Great story, Andy. I think I know a few of those guys. Regards, John
  22. Marantz.... heh. I got a few of them 'round here. Love 'em I do. Let me say this about Mr. Marantz... That ex-racer, chef extraordinare has built some good amps that will never be forgotten.
