  1. I have no more time to waste debating with Zen's saying I have clairvoyant speculation. He does not want to hear what I think of his resorting to name calling like a teenager saying whatever. Very childish that can turn vicious name calling I like to think I am above.
  2. You are missing good old common sense and your logic and reason leans more to politics. I also know which news organizations you depend on, since you did not mention them, you take as gospel as well. I have read the the letters you quote and disagree with what you take as fact. You will find doctors that disagree on the cure of any illness. Lawyers get in court and disagree with the facts viciously. It all depends on which side you are on on how you view the facts. I vehemently disagree with your opinion on what is the truth and fact. Nothing personal but just as our country is very divided right now you are on one side and I am on the other.
  3. No need to but I do agree with what you said but I feel it may be fading fast.
  4. And who exactly do you consider respected news organizations? Are these the same news organizations that lied to us over and over quoting "reliable sources have said?" I consider your opinions a skewed political perspective. imo
  5. And who exactly is the judge on what is disinformation? I am sure in Russia it would be the Communist party. Now it seems in the USA on social media forums it is going to be the Democrat party. Now can you understand why censorship is wrong? Probably not.
  6. Information should not be banned or deleted if we are to have a democracy ever again. Everyone has to weigh the benefits vs the risk with any medicine or medical procedure. Censorship is very dangerous.
  7. Nothing beats the quickness and dynamics of horns. That was the deciding factor on buying my LaScala's and retiring my 901's. Horns have that live sound. Go to any concert and the main speakers you are going to see will be horns. Not everyone likes the live sound in their home so that is the reason that many prefer conventional speakers.
  8. I hope no one starts throwing rocks at me but the first speakers that sounded great to me were some Bose 901 series11 with 200 watts per channel driving them. I was into rock being played loud and they worked for me until I bought my LaScala's. I still have the Bose 901's after getting them from my son who had them stored away and was not using them. I checked the speakers and they are still in good shape and and have not deteriorated as some of the later versions were prone to do.
  9. I do not see how it could be anything other then the voice coil. The voice coil is what burns out when they blow. Know this from experience. You should have a 5 watt tweeter when you switch.
  10. I am not a big fan of tone controls but they do have advantages to tailor the sound for ones taste and room. I will not throw rocks at a system with tone controls. Too bright sound is a common problem with horns. At least it is a common complaint with horns. Just as tone controls are out of favor so is speaker controls, actually l-pads, they are out of favor as well. More people would be more happy with their horns if they included as way of turning down the high frequencies with controls. Simple problem to solve using after market L-pads. Not complicated to install.
  11. Changing caps will help sometimes. The reason is probably that some caps roll off the highs more then others. L-pads are what your really need for shrill highs though. The difference between name brand resistors is almost if not a non-issue. Reason being they are so simple they are hard to screw up. You can make a resistor with a piece of paper and a carbon pencil at home. Try and measure if you do not believe.
  12. The old electrolytic will last longer then most think. I routinely replace all of them when restoring old electronics just because they do have a life limit of 15 years. Most trouble will be in the hard working PS section though. Film caps will hardly ever just outright fail. Just does not happen. Replacing old ones will sound different but that is also the case trying different new brands as well. The old saying "if it ain't broke why try and fix it" applies. In other words if you are satisfied with the sound you have just leave alone. One exception with the old oil filled ones laying on their side. If they leak replace them. Many on this forum are like those buying a Harley Davidson motorcycle. After purchasing a new one they go back to the store every weekend buying something new and different for their bike. At least that is what my best friend said who was a manager of a Harley, Suzuki store. When a Suzuki was sold they never saw them again.
  13. Tragic but not everyone should own a gun or for that matter a drivers license either. That being said accidents happen with guns, motorcycles, cars and most anything else mechanical. Woofers statement about finger off trigger is super important with the relatively new striker fire pistols without a safety, Glock and clones. Not that uncommon for law enforcement officers shooting themselves in leg putting their Glock in holster with trigger hanging up on hold down strap.
  14. It gets a little more complicated when a transformer is involved then just measuring impedance of parallel resistors. Those that build and repair tube gear understand this from the impedance of an output transformer. When you measure the impedance of a transformer, an auto-transformer is a transformer, there is the one measurement with just a ohmmeter. Then there is the impedance when one considers the audio signal. Anyone that reads the specs of a tube output transformer understands this. For example this Edcor transformer that is rated at 5K ohms. https://www.edcorusa.com/gxse10-5k But if one measures it with an ohmmeter you will see 187ohms which is called DCR or the resistance at a dc voltage. https://www.edcorusa.com/gxse10-5k The self banned former member of this forum Al at ALK Engineering explains the concept of using a swamping resistor better then what you will find on the forum. No matter what is thought of Al he is a very talented, but very opinionated, individual who if memory serves me correct has an engineering degree so is to be respected. This is not to say the standard Klipsch crossovers are any worse or maybe even better. Just and alternative concept that allows adjusting attenuation using an auto-transformer forgoing using an L-pad along with the auto-transformer to tailor the sound.
  15. The TI 3255 board is an excellent sounding affordable class D amplifier. With a better PS it will only sound better especially for the lower bass. It takes a good PS with some reserve to have solid good bass.
  16. All long threads start wandering to different trails. Normal event.
  17. A low class ride is better than a high class walk any day of the week.
  18. A principle often overlooked these days when so much is expected as a given. You are like everything else in a free market " what someone else is willing to pay." Like a used car when people are trying to sell it say "the book says my car is worth so and so." The response is always books do not write a check. The car or any other product is worth only what someone is willing to pay. I would have liked your Dad. Great post for Fathers day.
  19. Perhaps the new production tubes just need some more hours on them. Tubes do need some break-in time. I prefer NOS and buy them whenever I can price wise and availability. The main difference is not so much sound but longevity from all that I have read on the web. The tubes of old did not all sound the same from brand to brand much as is with the new production ones.
  20. Especially with this virus circling the globe. My best who was never sick caught Covid and was dead less than a week later. Tomorrow is not promised to any of us.
  21. I should also mention the old lady next door, younger then me, is extremely on the other side of the fence but it does not makes us less friends. She is so opinionated we do not discuss it anymore but I take her garbage can to the street every week and visit her when she is in the hospital. She knows she can depend on me when she needs me even though we disagree. This is the way it is supposed to be in a democracy.
  22. First everyone hears differently so there is no one size fits all. This is from my own personal experience. Years ago I built all the published schematics I could find for the LaScala speakers along with some designs of my own. We are talking 30 or more with many hours listening to each one. No extreme measurements as Langston has done which is an enjoyable endeavor I have done with other electronic equipment charting measurements. To me ditching the autotransformer made for better sound with my equipment and room. I contributed to better sound of not using iron for attenuation as being the phase shift. There was one LaScala crossover, cannot remember the exact one, that the engineers at Klipsch could not decide if reversing the leads at the crossover was the correct thing to do. The were sent out one way and a few years later it was determined the leads should be reversed to compensate for the phase shift. After doing all that work I decided to just build an AA network with the autotransformer using decent parts to leave in my LaScala's. Good enough is the way I figured it and when they are passed down my sons will not have trouble selling them being stock. L-pad discrete resistor attenuation or autotransformer? The fact is a resistor is the less offensive electronic component. PS: I do not listen myself with the stock LaScala network, mid horn or tweeter. What I have made sits on top of my speakers only using the bass bin of the LaScala. Easily switchable to stock for selling at a later date. That is if one of my sons do not keep them. The crossover network does not include an autotransformer.
  23. I am on the other side of the fence feeling the same way about the extreme other channels of which you know who. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with having opposing views. Having opposing views is what makes America great and a democracy. I just cannot understand why there is so much hostility now if someone does not agree with you. Sickening and terrible people turning against one another. Some of my best friends of my adult life did not agree with me on so many issues. It did not make us less good friends. We even enjoyed debating each other on the issues of our country. Where has love of our fellow man gone?
  24. Great you took the time to do so much research and testing of autotransformers. PWK was very opinionated and a proficient writer. At the time of his choosing an autotransformer tube amplifiers ruled with low output so it is my belief, and many others, that the main reason for choosing an autotransformer is low to minimum power loss. As Dean stated there are negatives of using an autotransformer, the main one I do not like is the phase shift that naturally occurs using iron. Most all if not all speaker manufacturers have ditched the autotransformer in passive crossovers with discrete l-pad for attenuation. Does the job much cheaper and with amplifiers these day's watt savings is a mute point. Klipsch as well. Many many years since the went to discrete l-pad for attenuation over an autotransformer. There is one famous company that uses an autotransformer in their SS amplifiers, not speakers, is McIntosh.
  25. I've never seen so many help wanted signs at so many business' right now in the small community I live in. Plenty of jobs and no one to fill them. My brother needed repairs done to his car and called his local independent shop he has been using about bringing it in. The owner said do not bring it to him because many of his employee's are at home getting more money and benefits for not working than showing up for work. That says a lot of the state of affairs of our country and inflation.
