  1. It all really comes down to if one is not happy with their new Klipsch speakers because of being too bright either get rid of them with a loss or tailor the sound with L-pads. I hate to think of someone getting rid of such wonderful speakers when simply installing some L-pads will solve the too bright problem. Being too bright is a common complaint with horn speakers. Probably more to do with their room then anything else.
  2. Look at the often criticized AL network. A case of throwing in more parts with the consequences they intel. I like simple.
  3. An L-pad is nothing more then 2 resistors. The adjustable L-pad is one fixed resistor and one variable resistor. Basic simplest electronic component. You can make a resistor yourself at home with a carbon pencil and piece of paper. Autotransformers or transformers have significant more amounts of inductance and capacitance then a resistor. You have significant amounts of phase shift of the signal with an autotransformer. Some of the crossover networks on the old heritage lines have the + and - leads reversed going to the speaker because of this. In other words the signal has shifted significant enough to be close to 180 degrees from the input signal. The engineers at Klipsch have been using discrete L-pads for attenuation for years in all their products which should be enough said. You are not going to introduce anything that you can hear installing an L-pad other then the desired result of tailoring the sound for your room and taste. Install on the mids and highs and you can achieve more bass with reduction of efficiency of course. The biggest problem though is the highs where most install a L-pad because of the horn being too bright for their taste. It works and is cheap. Easy enough to remove as well.

I think it would be better if one does not like the sound they are hearing with their Klipsch speaker to use L-pads to tame a high frequency they cannot live with then to get rid of their Klipsch speakers. It is a cheap solution that solves the problem that improves the sound to the owners ear in their room. No crossover is a one size fits all in any speaker. Those that play with active crossover tailoring the sound to fit their taste can attest to this.

  6. Would not call it distortion and the effect of resistance changes may effect the amount of attenuation but at such a small amount not anything audible. Even an autotransformer has resistance as well as capacitance but neither are significant enough to be meaningful. Electrical engineers get down to specifics and tradeoffs and the ones at Klipsch now do not think it meaningful enough to matter by their chose of discrete l-pad networks. There are electrical engineers who participate on this forum who could say more on this subject and specifics of how much and the effects between different ways of attenuation. There are very few speaker manufactures that use anything other then L-pads, either discrete are adjustable for attenuation. I am sure there are exceptions like most everything. The one negative of an adjustable L-pad is what happens to all controls is that over time they can be a problem but we are talking 15 years and a shot of deoxit cures that.

  8. I am not familiar with this type but if it works it may be OK but not for me when a couple of resistors do the same thing. Even an autotransformer is cheaper than it.
  9. Dr doom. He has become a publicity seeker more than anything else lately. I know plenty people now that have had the virus including people over 70 with no real problems. Just a more severe flu than normal. I mentioned my best friend dying after catching the virus but the truth be told he probably had other health issues that contributed to his dying. Went through my grandson's college the first few weeks without any serious problems. Appears to be serious mostly for the elderly with other health issues. I think it is time to get back to normal wbut taking more caution. I plan on still wearing a mask when shopping myself as Japan has been doing for decades before covid. Took my Johnson and Johnson vaccination but still being cautious because of age and health issues even though thinking I may have already had it and been vaccinated as well.
  10. I would say yes, only a resistor network something that Klipsch uses now for attenuation in their speakers. Autotransformers have not been used by Klipsch for years. Where confusion lies is discrete vs variable L-pads. I would say discrete is somewhat better in the long wrong but nothing to lose any sleep over. One could use a variable L-pad to find the right network by measuring and then use a discrete network if you are concerned.

  13. Unless I am wrong when you put resistors in parallel, the speaker is considered a resistor, the resistance the amplifier sees will be lower then the speakers nominal resistance. Am I wrong Mike? I first heard of putting a resistor in parallel with the speaker was from Nelson Pass on one of his amplifiers that ran best with a 8 ohm speaker and a customer had 16 ohm speakers and the amplifier did not perform as it was intended. After placing an 16ohm resistor in parallel with the speaker everything worked as intended and the customer was happy. Unless I am mistaken it was a low power Firstwatt amplifier.
  14. Short across it anyway. Could be when a signal reaches it that it opens too early. Never know.
  15. Just came to me. Not as quick thinking as I use to be. If the polyswitch is bad, open it would be the problem of low highs since all the sound would be going through the 100ohm resistor and also changing the crossover frequency. Easy to check with ohmmeter or even just jump across the polyswitch with a jumper wire.
  16. Learn something every day. I just googled RDE 50 and came up with a ceramic capacitor that Mouser and Digikey sells. If that is the case then the circuit should be just a protection circuit which does make sense. No help for OP.
  17. You might try removing the RDE50 and 100 ohm resistor and see what effect that has. I had to do some searching to find out exactly what a RDE 50 is and what I find is it is a ceramic capacitor. Never seen that symbol before and not listed in an electronic symbol book I have. Anyways the circuit looks like it may be some kind of attenuation network. Might be just for frequencies above the human hearing range but not exactly sure what frequency without the value of capacitor stated. Worth a try anyways. Will not hurt anything. Not part of the crossover frequency network.
  18. You cannot do that with the original Klipsch design crossovers without upsetting the crossover frequencies. ALK sells crossovers that can be done that way.
  19. Easy to do with L-pads from parts express. Directions come with L-pad. You will need two, one for each channel. Just remember center pin goes to positive + of the driver.   21. The EL34 kit uses good parts and iron. Should sound excellent when assembled. Not much choice these days for someone wanting learn and build a tube kit. I lived in the day when there were many choices. I even assembled a television kit in the 60's. Good luck finding a television kit these days. Looks like a good way for someone to get into diy electronics and be rewarded with excellent sound.

  23. I highly recommend what Mustang said. I do not think moving the crossover point has any bearing on what you are hearing. I would recommend these. https://www.parts-express.com/L-Pad-15W-Mono-3-8-Shaft-8-Ohm-260-248 Easy peasy to install. Center pin goes to horn. If either one of the other pins hooked up wrong the L-pad will just be in reverse. Increase the wattage if you want but 15 watt is plenty good enough. Tweeter never sees a continuous 15 watts, doubtful even a peak 5 watts. The driver for the horn is the culprit. Needs some attenuation to suit your taste.
