  1. As a general term no unless the caps are in the 50's or earlier. They rarely test bad even after decades of use and are still serviceable. The ones I have found that push replacing caps and crossovers on forums are mostly the sellers of caps and crossovers. Absolutely nothing wrong with doing so just because but do not expect a significant difference if you like the way the speakers sound now. I have experimented with coupling caps in tube amplifiers using different brands and their are differences in the sound for those that are critical listener's but that does not mean different ones are going to sound better. More like different is what I would describe it. If one decides to replace crossover caps I advise to keep the old ones in case you do not like the way new ones sound. Then there is always other brands to try but it takes a lot of time and $ swapping in and out and taking time to listen when you go down that rabbit hole. Again as other have said "if it ain't broke don't try and fix it."
  2. There is a lot of restorers of equipment from the 60's and beyond that do not believe in replacing all the electrolytic caps but only the ones with high ESR resistance. I am in the camp they need replacing being the manufacturer of electrolytic caps in the data sheets describe the life span of their caps are generally 15 years. I do not want an old electrolytic cap that test good today to fail next week being 15 years old.
  3. Electrolytic caps are the ones called wet not film caps which are in the signal path of most crossover networks. Film caps are considered dry being nothing more than metal plates separated by some type of material. Generally referred to as some type of plastic. The old style capacitors use paper as an insulator between the 2 separate metal plates which requires oil on the paper to prevent the paper absorbing moister from the air shorting the plates together.
  4. I agree. The ones in electronic devices that have a life span are electrolytic which do need replacing in 20 year old equipment. The film caps in very old equipment that are paper film caps do fail but we are talking equipment in the 50's or older which will not apply to crossover caps as a rule.
  5. Film caps in crossovers seldom fail or deteriorate to the point they need replacing. I realize this is a very controversial subject on this forum but technicians seldom replace film caps in electronic devices. Certainly if one replaces them the speakers will sound different but that is generally the case when one swaps different new brand of caps in a crossover as well. My personal advice is if you like the sound now do not try to fix something that is not broken.
  6. Hard to go wrong with Amazon refund policy. No like send back. Also they hold their value very well on the used market. I think you will be surprised at the level of sound produced by a SE tube amplifier. The EL-34 tube family is one of my favorites. It would be hard for me to talk about the retail market of amplifiers being a diy'er. All my many amplifiers are ones I have built. The last retail amp I tried a few years back I gave to my brother. It was a Yamaha. Maybe just the wrong Yamaha but it did not impress me at all but then I believe I only paid $400 for it. I am sure the more expensive ones would sound great.
  7. Either one would be a good choice but for an entirely different sound SE. The thing is one would have to spend much more for a SS amplifier to get the quality of sound in a tube amplifier. This is from someone who has 30 or more amplifiers at the present time both tube and SS. Most of my SS ones are First Watt clones which retail in the thousands. This one is highly reviewed. https://www.amazon.com/BOYUU-Hi-Fi-Stereo-Amplifier-Single-end/dp/B07L4GL63N/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?crid=21ZGDGM8E1AZJ&dchild=1&keywords=tube+amplifier+stereo&qid=1611866460&sprefix=tube+amp%2Caps%2C227&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUFLRUFDVzM1REVTTEgmZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTAxNDQ2MTgyWlpTNjY1VzkzWUU3JmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTA5MzU4MThNVFFTWEdONzVGMU0md2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGYmYWN0aW9uPWNsaWNrUmVkaXJlY3QmZG9Ob3RMb2dDbGljaz10cnVl And for push pull consider this one. https://www.amazon.com/BOYUU-MT-34-Intergrated-Amplifier-Push-pull/dp/B07L3HQ425/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?crid=21ZGDGM8E1AZJ&dchild=1&keywords=tube+amplifier+stereo&qid=1611866523&sprefix=tube+amp%2Caps%2C227&sr=8-2-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUExUVpCUE9WSzEzVTNHJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwNzI5ODIzRkw3TkVCOTU3QkoyJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTA5MzQ0MDIxUzVZNjlBSFNXOTM5JndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==
  8. To see what you have been missing in sound try a tube amplifier. Cheapest alternative for great sound with LaScala's. Some of the Chinese ones are great deals right now. Amazon
  9. Parts express sells the adapter which works great with no drilling. No change of crossover is necessary. When it comes to horns bigger is better. The 511b is one of the few really big horns that will work with 1" drivers.
  10. I thought you may have considered the F8 over the J2. Supposedly same signature in sound with improvements. Then I am sure you will enjoy your J2 being it is one of the most popular FW designs. https://www.firstwatt.com/f8.html
  11. There are 2 new videos of interviews of Nelson Pass by Steve Guttenberg available now on youtube. Steve has high praise for the Cornwall 1V's on both videos along with good knowledge from the master Nelson Pass. Especially on the perspective of sound among the high end market. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vAnYRdXatRo&ab_channel=SteveGuttenbergAudiophiliac https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pp-i97bc8AQ&ab_channel=SteveGuttenbergAudiophiliac
  12. Dave's been a long time member and moderator and it is pretty obvious since first starting this thread there has been new developments. I do not particular like the drama going on in this type of thread. Dave has contributed much to this forum and it's success over the years and I do not like to see him leave this way. I hate to see friction among the staff that run this forum but I do not think it appropriate to make it public on this forum. I also do not like the idea of a private BS section among a few on a Klipsch speaker forum. And I am glad it no longer exist. That kind of thing is better had on a general social media site of which there are many. This forum should be only about Klipsch speakers and the gear that is associated to make them work. Anything else should be addressed in the lounge section for all to see. Dave I hope you change your mind again and participate when some time has past for you to get over whatever it is that is going on behind the curtain. There are many that will miss you including myself.
  13. Having never heard the Hypex's I cannot argue with you about how they sound. The technical part of me still says class A is the most linear of all the classes and that does not mean all other classes can and do sound great if implemented right. Since diving into class A sound the last 10 years I looked down on class A/B until my last amplifier build a 150 watt class A/B amplifier. It incorporates all the improvements in circuitry in class A/B over the years. Outstanding sound. Much the same can be said for my TPA3255 amplifier, outstanding sound. All that being said the most satisfying sound for me is one of my tube amplifiers.
  14. I think there must be something wrong with the software you used to rip or something that you did or did not do. I say this because I download MP3 320 files all the time and yes they are not quiet as good as the CD but are not offensive in any way and are acceptable to listen to.
  15. I am pretty sure the price is for a pair and Amazon is showing in stock.
  16. Terrible news. So sorry to hear about it. RIP
  17. I do not think you will go wrong with any of the Klipsch options available with what you have described. https://www.amazon.com/Klipsch-Reference-Floorstanding-Cerametallic-Ebony/dp/B00TT430L4/ref=sr_1_7_sspa?crid=4HP9YN4R14M8&dchild=1&keywords=klipsch+speakers&qid=1611060828&rnid=2941120011&s=electronics&sprefix=klip%2Caps%2C648&sr=1-7-spons&psc=1&smid=A3MHJLSLQR2CVH&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUExWjIyMFhOOEVXSjg0JmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwNzY0NTE0MTVPS1RCTDVUVEc0SCZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwNzEyNTEzMjM3M1RRODBKMTNPVSZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX210ZiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU= Just one option in your price range new. For more go to Amazon and type Klipsch speakers.
  18. First thought Richie is a variac of some sort. Is there any name or product number on it? I have never seen a variac with a big cap in it though. Anyway it appears to be a test instrument of some sort. Probably specifically made for a specialized piece of equipment.
  19. For me a pound a year. At least until the last couple of years where a pound has lasted 2 years. Always used 60/40 and never a problem for me. I keep and use flux on repair work and big wire and components when necessary. Does help tremendously and may be a useful product for those that have not done or do not do a lot of soldering.
  20. Glad you decided to stay Dave.
  21. I agree, why even post this thread if you are leaving this forum. If you are leaving the forum why the shock of not being a moderator. Does not make sense Dave. Just politely accept the results of your post of leaving the forum and the consequences of it.
  22. Mallette no offense but it should not be unknown to you from some of your recent post. This is a Klipsch forum not a general social media forum. Personally I believe Travis has done a lot to clean up this forum where it is not just for a few but for more newbie's to participate and post. I have been a lurker for many years without joining fearing attacks from some of the favored members who ruined it for anyone that disagreed with them. I think the changes the last few years are better for the Klipsch name and represents the company better. I could be wrong about Travis being the driving force for changes but I think I am right and I welcome the changes. Instead of posting to try and cause controversy by starting this thread just accept the change and contribute in a positive way in the future. In the future you welcome the change of not being a moderator. Naturally no one likes to be fired and they feel angry at first but it might be the best thing that has happened to you.
  23. The diy amp camp amplifier does sound really good for what it cost to build when one considers it is a class A amplifier. The Amp Camp is a single ended amplifier which I call more the culmination of most of the Zen series of diy amplifiers with one output transistor only. Nelson called it hearing one transistor clapping.
