The incoming cannonball shots are fantastic. Carl. ---------------- The cannon shots sound great on my setup, too. I own it. Being retired military helps me appreciate the "relationship" and leadership aspects of the movie. I suspect some civilians might have trouble understanding those parts of the movie. Like "Last Samurai" for a lot of the same reasons. Thought the battle scenes in "Windtalkers" sounded pretty good, also.
  2. Ceiling mount! Why didn't I think of that! Just bought a Panasonic PT-LM1U projector, why not mount it to fire movies up at the ceiling! If you try that with Choruses, remember they weigh about #89 apiece.
  3. czilla, Short version, I love Klipsch speakers because they make my hair stand on end. Drama! Their dynamic response is hard to beat, and classical music begs for dynamic response from a speaker! Another writer alluded that Klipsch gets panned by the "audiophiles" because PKW wouldn't "play the game". All the more reason to buy Klipsch! Isn't there enough BS in the world.... Now the tough part; the right Klipsch for your bedroom! I'm only going to speak from what I've personally owned and lived with, klipsch-wise: Thought I saw a recommendation for Heresy 1's; my take is they might sit a little low and not fire high enough over the bed. KG4's might be small enough to place on your dresser, and they usually aren't to expensive to come by. Make sure your dresser is sturdy, the KG4 is not light and with enough power fed through it might "walk". The possible downside of the KG4 for you might be that they are not the ideal classical music speaker. Rock listeners love 'em. As always, audition before you buy. Chorus II's should be tall enough to fire the midrange and high to you. Half of the bass comes out the rear, so that might work, too. The Chorus II excels at classical! My favorite thing is to crank up the Haenssler-Laudatte CD of Helmuth Rilling and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau's rendition of Bach's Cantata BWV 82 "Ich habe genug". You might just acquire a taste for Bach and Haendel! Toscanini conducting Beethoven's 9th ain't at all bad either. Of all the speakers I have owned, the Chorus IIs are by far my favorite. Downside of the Chorus II is that putting them in a small room is like caging a 800lb gorilla. The Forte's and Choruses really seem to like a large room to show you what they can really do! Hopefully, some of the other forum members can give you other opinions/recommendations for specific Klipsch speakers for your situation. Would be nice to hear from owners of the smaller speakers as well.

They had very short cantilevers (the shaft the stylus is on) which was good for DJ backcuing. Most models also had a weighted brush out front, which helped dampen the effects of warped records. I highly recommend them! ---------------- Now that's a blast from the past! I used a 681 way back when and it sure sounded great!

Leo Also, after I found out how much distortion a good power filter eliminates, I wondered if just the AC filter would have been almost as effective. ---------------- Question about the Blackgate mod: What value volts and mf is the cap you are going to replace? Upgraded several caps in a Marantz 2220b receiver I used to own. Used mainly Samhwas (cheaply and readily available here in S. Korea) and Nichicons here and there. Generally when I replaced a stiffener electrolytic I raised the mf value around 50% and used the highest voltage rating the physical size would permit. Also replaced a pair of electrolytics in the amp sound path with polys. The improvement from all this was noticeably more detail and staging, cleaner highs, better transients and the elimination of popping the receiver used to have. The 2220b sounded so good that when it was time to replace it, I sent it to my family to decide who would keep it. Couldn't bear letting it go to a stranger! In the electrolytic world, Blackgate (see my avatar) is the top dog. If I ever decide to toy with my 2385, it will get the Blackgate$ it deserves!

The Chorus II is my next purchase and I wonder if anyone had any comments about that model?? Thanks, Jerry ---------------- I've owned Heresy 1's KG4's and my recently acquired Chorus II's. The Chorus is easily my favorite for it's open, airy and powerful reproduction.

I have been out of touch with the TT world for a long while. I know Ortofon's were good at one time but I have been dormant in this (TT) world for too long and would appreciate some recommendations. Thanks. Jim ---------------- When I put my Thorens TT back into action, I'm looking to go with a Grado Gold. http://www.needledoctor.com/s.nl/c.ACCT106601/sc.2/category.374/it.A/id.248/.f No personal experience with one, though...so would like to hear if anyone in the forum has an opinion

Basically what I get from the dish, some DVD, my one PS2, basically a combination, but with that said, I don't really need a 5.1 setup at this time, I could even wait a couple of years. The room is a good 17x17. Bottom line, I'm looking for a good stereo. Possibly $200 for the fronts, $200 for the sub, $150 for the reciever. ---------------- My previous system (now upgraded) was built at about your budget level. Klipsch KG4's: $250 for the pair from ebay. Something like these: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=61378&item=5713187214&rd=1 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=61378&item=5712874175&rd=1 KG4.2's are another possibility: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=61378&item=5713039693&rd=1 (unfortunately, this guy won't ship) Marantz 2220b receiver: about $120 from ebay (would suggest going to a a little more wattage if you can afford it, though not absolutely necessary for 17x17). Here's a possibility: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=50596&item=5712892242&rd=1 No subwoofer. If you go this route, you might find the KG4's in combination with Marantz SS put out enough bass without one. This is all vintage equipment, so you'll want to shop WITH CARE. At the risk of attracting flames, I doubt that there are many AFFORDABLE used SS receivers that can match 1970's era Marantz for build quality, reliability and sound. IMHO a magical (budget) match with vintage Klipsch.
  9. Okay, I'll confess! I own a Bose Acoustic Wave Radio and when used as an "instant patio party boombox", it is hard to beat! I drag the box cross country for this role...... Interesting that they used a folded horn for the bass, isn't it?! Would I pay $1000 for one new? Don't think so! $4-500 on ebay is more like it.... Wish Klipsch made a competing product with the flexibility, portability, style and output of the Acoustic Wave. If they ever decide to may I suggest it play DVDs and MP3's. So, in short, I'm happy with the AWR, but not with the value per $$$.
  10. Earlier this year my girlfriend came to visit me from Taegu while I was on a business trip to Seoul. Guess what I was doing when she walked up to the front of my hotel? Loading (with great effort) my newly purchased ChorusII's into the back of my VW Golf! Mind you, she has never said a WORD about this purchase, however ever since then, I have noticed an upward creep in the price and quantity of the designer skirts, shoes, etc., that she has asked me to buy for her! Good thing she is worth it! I have not yet computed the final price of my audio upgrade!
  11. "Say YES YES YES!" Ben Kingsley in Sexy Beast portrayed one of the toughest gangsters I can remember in cinema! I've got 20+ gangster/mafia films. My HT system is still 2 channel (with ChorusII's, I'm not convinced I need more yet). Some of the movies that shine on my system are: Casino (especially the opening scene with the Bach intro) Saving Private Ryan True Lies The Killing Fields (I thought the mortars were incoming to my living room) Master and Commander, the Far Side of the World (cannon shots) The Last Samurai (battle Scenes. visually stunning tribute to Kurosawa) I'm going to rewatch Ran by Kurosawa to hear if its sound matches the stunning visual. And finally folks, the greatest movie EVER made, (drum roll please): Joe's Apartment I ask you, what can match cockroaches singing Funk, Surf, C&W etc for a total movie experience!

Sorry to give you this advise but save your thousand until you can get what you desire. If you neeed something until then spend $400-$500 on a standard direct view." I wholeheartedly agree with this post. If you attempt to buy anything other than a 4:3 basic TV right now, you will pay dearly for what you get. A few years back I had a similar issue - I needed a display, but knowing about HD being around the corner, and associated changes that would come with the arrival of HD has me saying NO to any HD or expensive displays, until economies of scale take hold on HD products (which will happen once everything goes HD). In two or three years, you will be glad you did. I would peruse your local paper and find a nice used 32-35" direct view 4:3 set (you will find these CHEAP), and live with it for 3 years. I have a feeling that no matter what you purchase now, you'll find MUCH BETTER size and performance in a display in 3 years.....and spend much less $$$$ in an attempt to find the top of the price/performance curve at that time. It's like computers were 5 years ago: You buy one, the unit is worth half of what you paid a month later, and units with much better performance hit the market right afterwards. Now that PC's are doing what most people need (processor speed wars aren't so important now, because even the more basic units do almost everything - even video), the pace of changes/improvements are slowing, and the prices are less volatile. I intend to wait until such phenomena occurs in the HDTV arena, then I'll persue the video display. Anything I buy now will be replaced in 3 years anyway. ---------------- I agree with Audio Nectar 100%. Plus my 2 cents: Among the current conventional direct view TV's I haven't seen anything (including current Sony's) that beats the picture I'm getting from my 1996 KV27VT5 Trinitron. I'd like to find a 32' or 36' old Trinitron, but they aren't easy to come by over here in Korea (land of Samsung and LG), and the people that do have them aren't about to give them up! Makes you think.....

When I went shopping for used speakers in Seoul, the competition to my Chorus' were usually 2 to 4 times as expensive.
  16. Just got some Chorus II's and I feel like throwing a party! Eviction Schmeviction....!!!!! So where are my fellow (non-korean) Klipschers in the "Land of Not Quite Right" (S. Korea) to help break them in right? Ray still needs to change his avatar!
  17. Russian music. I can only pick out two themes: A. Vodka Nightmare. B. Lost in an Oriental Swamp.
  18. Just bought a pair in Seoul and do they sound great. But of course, tinkerer that I am, I won't be able to leave them alone. Anyone (like Trey) have a crossover schematic? P/N 09000641111 CH2 WAL OIL S/N 41821, 41822 7779 Any info appreciated!

That some critic finds fantasy battle between Orks and Elves more compelling than an accurate depiction of real men and real events tells us more about those critics than it does about The Alamo movie. You know, when ole Travis sent his pleas for help from the Alamo and signed one "God and Texas. Victory or Death" he wasn't posing or making a photo opprotunity. He was dead serious, as he proved. That was amazing behavior and some folks today, especially the often effete Journalism majors that end up reviewing movies, just won't accept that. CAN'T accept that lest they have to examine their own shallow values and find them wanting. And who wants to do that? ---------------- I'm here in Korea with our troops and guess what folks? The Army has to offer them money to extend their tours over here! I've talked with more than a few of them who can't wait to get over to Iraq or Afghanistan to do the job they signed up for.
  20. The improvement I have noted from the KG-4 parts upgrade was mainly in the area of detail. Oddly enough, off-axis sound improved as well. However, I'm in Seoul right now and there is a set of walnut Chorus II's at an audio boutique calling to me....
  21. On your advice (given some while back) I replaced the Iron core inductors in my KG-4 crossover with air core and am quite happy with the results. Was definitely challenging stuffing those upgraded parts on that little board!
  22. Understand the GAF. Strategies help (sometimes). My plan for now is that should I move into different apartment, my KG-4s will be augmented by Forte II's or Chorus II's. "Sweetheart look! The KG's grew up, got married and decided to have little ones of their own!...."

  24. Rewired the internals of my KG-4's with Oehlbach Silverstream and thought I got a little better definition out of it.
