  1. Oh lets see, where to start? Perhaps a decent phono preamp, or perhaps a phono preamp period. If I had the above I would like some Rush albums on vinyl. A couple of sheets of 3/4" birch plywood to make some speaker stands with would not go unnoticed. Maybe a wooden cabinet to house a silk tie collection. A used walnut end table. A GIANT sheet of paper on which to layout actual size a massive horn loaded subwoofer(for my neighbors listening pleasure). A nice pocket knife. A soldering iron. Also nice would be a Jade Bhudda statue. And don't forget some interconnects for the ol two channel setup Peace, Josh
  2. Those dogg speakers are the same as the ones that a White Van Co. tried to sell me outside a winn-dixie a few weeks ago. Being the kind of speaker that people in white vans drive around selling they propably sound like crap and are likely made with cheap parts and a cheap crossover or none at all. Here is the thread where they were mentioned. http://forums.klipsch.com/idealbb/view.asp?topicID=27012&sessionID={63DA8663-710D-40C1-B112-7E60794010B1} Peace, Josh
  3. Just got AOTC and LOTR. Lol, I went out and bought them last night at about 2 in the morning after reading this thread. The seismic charges did not seem to sound the same last night when I was watching with the volume kind of quiet. This morning however once my neighbors were off to work I cranked up the asteroid scene pretty loud. It may seem a little odd but I think it is the midrange that really makes or breaks this scene. In the theater there was enough presence in the midrange to shake things. The midrange has to be loud and clear, when I watched it this morning I had my heresies cranked way on up there. Even without a sub there seemed to be a nice amount(who says heresy Mk1 doesn't have much bass) of low end rumble, and when the seismic charge goes off when the two huge asteroids smash into each other WOW. You have to remember when you saw this in the theater there were likely huge JBL or Klipsch horn loaded THX rated speaker systems being played very loud. The movie thater that I used to work at had a JBL system, one time when we thought we were having trouble with one of the compression drivers(turned out to be our decoder) we went and switched drivers and that thing was huge, It weighed about 25 pounds . The wrench we were using kept jumping and sticking to the back of the driver. The scene where Anakin chops the poisinous worms up with his lightsabre is the same as it was in the theater. Peace, Josh
  4. I have never tried to roast marshmellows on a tube amp before, is this what they mean when they say that tubes have a "sweet" sound?? I do remember a (former) friend of my dads roasting an lp on top of my dads Dynaco st70 one time when I was little, would this have the same damping effect? All it seemed to dampen was my dads spirits, even though he usally does not thin his scotch with anything. I also have a clothes basket/tube cage I am not using right now(my as yet uncataloged collection of tubes is packed in tissue paper in a cardboard box) and I would be willing to sell this QUALITY cage for only 3570 japanese yen, shipping may cost extra but I assure you this is a quality unit, absolutely rust free. I am offering this unit without tubes, however I will propably list whats in my box of tubes once I have a chance to go through them all, I know I have a couple of Telefunken of the 12AX7,12AT7 variety as well as a number of RCA, GE, Raytheon, and Sylvania. Hopefully I will be able to go through my box of tubes when I go home for thanksgiving. Peace, Josh
  5. Nice, That looks pretty cool. About how much did those run you on parts? Lol, that extra baffle/brace should cut down on cabinet resonance I should think. How long did they take you to put together once you had the parts, wood cut etc? Peace, Josh
  6. "One reason they are used may be that they are more sensitive, all else being equal. If you half the resistance, and keep the input voltage the same, then you should get twice as much power out. It is only 3 dB." Don't forget(I'm sure you didn't) that every 3dB increase doubles the volume. Hence the decibel sytstem being exponential. Peace, Josh
  7. Some CD players are more picky than others about playing CDR media. In my not that all encompassing experience it helps to burn using "Disk at Once" instead of "Track at Once" also make sure to close out the session and not to write a multi-session disk, these settings depend on your burner and software. Sometimes even if you burn a CDR as an audio cd it is not quite up to the red book CD-DA standard. As for the age of CD players that will play burned CD's it varies widely, the JVC CD player that was my families first cd player has been able to play any brand of CDR that I've tried: pale blue green Memorex, bright blue expensive TDK, kinda blue FUJI and some silver looking thing my friend had. The JVC CD player is still my families main CD player, it was bought in 1990 or 91 and I would estimate it has been used about 2 to 4 hours a day since the early nineties and is still going strong. Not once have we had to take it in for service, not bad for over 10,000 hours. I wish my parents Sony reciever was that reliable Peace, Josh
  8. Stephen, I had some problems early on with texture curruption(it looked like the worst .jpg ever)in opengl but subsequent driver versions seemed to fix it. The anti aliasing also does funny things in some games, it makes the menus unuseable in the first Starsiege Tribes so I tend to leave AA off. Peace, Josh
  9. BerndH, Not sure yet as to what I might build. I do enjoy diy though. Any good links on basshorn plans/theory? Peace, Josh
  10. Happy birthday Kain, Try and stay out of trouble ok Don't worry Max you're not old, just wiser than us youngins. Peace, Josh
  11. I wouldn't say that XP was a bad operating system, just not a free one. I've been running it for a year straight and can litterally count on one hand the number of times it crashed. I also know why it crashed and it is my fault. It seems that my video card(ATI radeon 8500 64MB DDR dual out) did not like running two monitors at one time with an opengl game(Tribes2 or JK2) fullscreen on one monitor and the windows desktop still on the other. While that did not actually kill anything, it merely slowed things down a bit. When I paused the game and right clicked on the desktop to disable my extra monitor to free up resources, thats when I got the famous BSOD Other than my video card not one thing has crashed my computer requiring a reboot. My system is not that bad either though. win XP professional ATI radeon 8500 w/two 17" monitors Tyan S2460 motherboard Dual AMD 1.4Ghz processors 768MB registered ECC DDR SDRAM And some other stuff that doesn't really make windows run faster or slower so it is irrelevant. win XP does take some getting used to though, it seems to have a wizard for everything, not like the ol win NT4 I've got on my PII 233 or win 98SE on my PIII 750. All legal copies by the way, not that I payed for them though, It's just a matter of being in the right place at the right time Lol I've propably got enough EMI in my place to scramble transmissions on mars. Oh well time to get some sleep. Peace, Josh
  12. All I've heard of the synergy system is the KSC-C1 center channel. It does an admirable job. It sounds clean and accurate. It comes in black Too bad I normally listen to two channel music. Peace, Josh
  13. I think you may be a little off on that one Doc. The normally credited reason for DTS sounding superior to DD5.1 is the FACT that DTS usually uses a data rate of 1.5Mbps as opposed to the 640Kbps which is the maximum stated data rate for DD5.1 DTS and DD5.1 are both compression codecs just like mp3 or WMA. DTS was first released on Jurassic Park DD5.1 was for film AND hdtv broadcast. For information on DTS and DD5.1 look here http://www.dolby.com/ and here http://www.dtsonline.com/ Oh well just my 2 cents(gets off of soapbox) Peace, Josh
  14. btw, prodj what do you have in your system?? Peace, Josh
  15. I sure hope it never ends. step 1. Upgrade system. step 2. Realize your system sounds great. step 3. Buy music for your great system. step 4. One day you want something just a little bit better. step 5.Repeat steps 1 through 4. Thats usually the way it goes around here I think an Eico or Scott is propably in my future. Unfortunately though I know that student loans are also in my future so I might not be able to have those tubes any time soon. I've also been thinking about building my own horn loaded sub. I don't really miss that low frequency stuff right now(I don't care what anybody says the heresy has plenty of bass) but I would enjoy having a massive horn loaded monster to show off as well as to listen to. Oh well I guess the trick is to control your upgraditis and make informed purchases, and not be an impulse buyer. Impulse buying can really hurt you if you aren't careful. btw, good luck on building those speakers, it sounds like a load of fun Peace, Josh
  16. C&S I believe that to actually bi-amp you would need a preamp with an active crossover to split your signal into high and low to send to seperate amps, these amps would then separately power the woofer and mid-tweeter. The obvious advantage to this would be your ability to have an amp with much greater power for your low frequency and a smaller amp for your high's. I have never heard this in a Hi-fi setup, my only experience is with my Gallien-Krueger electric bass amp which has 380 watts for the low's and 50 watts for the high's. http://www.gallien-krueger.com/PRODUCTS/HEADS/700RB/700rb.html I'm guessing that bi-wiring means that the passive crossover in your speakers has to work less to seperate the high's and low's, it would just have to roll off any unwanted frequencies. As mentioned I would check and make sure your amp can handle the load of wiring that way. Peace, Josh
  17. John, Are these heresies going to be implemented into your existing system? Rear channels maybe? btw, I'm Bruce's son Josh, I came with him to hear your system a while back. I remember you mentioned getting some heresies at the time. The heresy is great speaker(for something thats not the size of a small fridge) I hope you get those working. Peace, Josh
  18. Prepare for Blasphemy I have always been partial to the JBL 4311 studio monitors. A friend of mine has a pair of the Sansui speakers and compared to theJBL's they seem to have a less defined midrange. In some ways I like the sound of JBL's over the heresies at lower volumes but I think that the sensitivity of the Heresies and their ability to play cleanly at LOUD volumes helps them win out over the 4311's. Although I still really wish I had a pair of the 4311's. It is still difficult to compare these speakers as you said due to the fact that they each have their own strengths and weaknesses. Thinking about it I've been comparing apples to oranges and grapefruit so to speak, my heresies are running off my ss yamaha HTR-5540, my dad's jbl 4311's sound great on his dynaco ST-70, and my friends sansui are on a cheap optimus receiver from ratshack None the less I would give the JBL's a listen if you can over there in Greece. these are on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=800825669 Oh well just my two cents. btw, are those heresy 2's that you have, seeing as how the components are mounted on the front of the baffle? Mine are rear mounted and I was curious as to the difference. Peace, Josh
  19. Ahh yes the frozen north. I was born in Madison Wisconsin and I have many fond memories of it being snowy out. Lol, when my sister and I were little we'd beg our mom to let us go outside to play in the snow. My mom's rule was only if it got above zero degrees ferenheit What were we thinking?? I can't imagine just wanting to run around all the time when it's only 2 degrees out. A heritage only store would be a great idea. You should start one right here in orlando. It's certainly the sunny south We might get a little competition from the "Sound Advice" stores, but we should be able to muscle them out of some turf There is also all the tourists in town for disney, if we could set up shop at downtown disney that would be awesome. There are already is a highend guitar store as well as the huge Virgin records store at downtown disney I'm sure your Heritage only store would fit right in. Just think $rich$ people are coming to disney and you get them to listen to a Pair of Khorns, and they can buy them on the spot and have them shipped to their home. Oh well to bad I'm asleep most of the day(darn class schedule) or I'd enjoy the beautiful weather a little more Peace, Josh
  20. You can cement them in parking lots as speed bumps More to come... Peace, Josh
  21. Hopefully your finger will get better. I guess it could be worse. My dad cut his finger on a computer chassis one day at work and had to get about 9 stitches He couldn't play guitar for about a month. Congrats on the gear, maybe you can get your pre-amp to work or find a different one. We had a sony 5disc at work and it lasted forever. Peace, Josh
  22. I also really love the guitar sounds on "Heaven" from The Rolling Stones "Tattoo You" and lets not forget "Jessies Girl" by Rick Springfield. Earlier today I was blasting out The Smiths album "Strangeways Here We Come" I love the song on there "Girlfriend in a Coma" I was also crankin up the volume on Blues traveler's "Straight on till morning". I got to see BT this summer and man what an incredible show, those guys rock Last but not least The King, thats right ladies and gentlemen, I like Elvis Elvis just deserves to be played loud. Peace, Josh
  23. Basketcase by Greenday Yeah real loud!! Also Vital Signs by Rush Peace, Josh
  24. Lol, I get enough sleep but it is at odd times. I've got class from 5pm to 9pm inthe evening and computer lab from 5am to 9am in the morning. I even have class on friday and saturday night yuck!! I tend to sleep about 4 hours at night and around 3 hours during the day. I just put some music playing on my '81 heresies and I take a nap If you feel rested you're propably ok with the amount of sleep you get. My friends mom used to be up at three in the morning cooking, painting, vaccuming etc. And and my friend said his mom was always like this. Just try and stay healthy, a sick DJ is a terrible thing Peace, Josh
  25. Those definately sound like heresies. The measurements are the same as mine. But its propably a 12" woofer and not a 10" They are an 8 ohm speaker, I can't remember what the other specs are right now but I'm sure somebody on here does Mine came with the right side(as you face the back of the speaker) of the terminals marked red, but I think they are usually blank. Great speakers btw. Peace, Josh
