  1. Propably so, However I would seriously consider trying a power amplifier more along the lines of what would be used in a prosound or studio setup. The crown amp in the link below is more like what I was thinking of, http://www.americanmusical.com/item.asp?UID=2003012922301602&menu=0303&keyword=AAPA1&item=CRO+XLS202A Although they are no longer made the RA-100 amplifier made by Alesis is a great little power amp and even though it is only 75wpc @8ohms it is propably more than you need to get your KLF's to earsplitting volumes, the alesis has the added bonus of not being fan cooled(it has 2 massive heatsinks), sometimes you would be suprised at how annoying an extra fan can be. *Edit* I thought it over and specifically an amp designed as a "studio" amplifier is propably going to have a cleaner sound at lower volumes then a PA amp, PA amps generally being designed to be clean when they are at or near max power. Peace, Josh

  3. m00n, Good idea. I think I will crank up the ol HiFi and pop the top off a cold one and listen to some tunes. btw, you mentioned Harmon Kardon receivers on the avs thread. I do have the little HK/430 which I love dearly but I'm not really into the home theater thing that much. As it is right now I don't have any use for the surround channels on my yammy anyway. Propably instead of going the route of a bigger better receiver I will follow the path of small tube amps for a two channel setup. Unfortunately not anytime soon seeing as how I'm a student living off of loans right now, this will change in less then a year when I graduate as I go from having no money to oweing great gobs of it to eventually having money once I am rich and famous. Now as I was saying, how about that beer Peace, Josh

  5. Tom, I think deans point is that the caps are so old they propably would no longer be up to spec so any measurements he did would likely be off. Neat looking speakers btw Peace, Josh

  7. The opinion of many people here on the forum is that the KSW subs are a little on the "sloppy" side of things. I doubt that A single KSW-15 would be able to keep up with the speed of the LaScalas. Peace, Josh
  8. John, After listening to my heresies the past couple of days with the specific intent to pay attention to the treble I came to a sort of a conclusion(to my ears anyway). At lower volumes the heresy seems well balanced, it is only as I get into the upper 90dBs range that the treble sounds too hot. My only slightly educated guess is that this is due to the same reason some recievers have a loudness button. As the volume drops off our ability to hear the treble and bass frequencies diminishes, I believe that this is called the "equal loudness curve" or something similar. Now that I think about it I'm kind of worried that I would lose some of the detail I am used to at lower volumes, I don't always listen at 100dB usually somewhere in the mid 80's. I may still try your first mod since it is easily reversible. Also I realize that you are doing this to match the timbre of your beautiful LaScalas, a "problem" I don't have. Happy listening. Peace, Josh

Then he can take that guy over to his place and knock his socks off. ---------------- Yeah, I sent a PM to that guy in merritt island. Maybe I will have a chance to go over there and listen to his rockets, lol. He said he went from RF3 based 7.1 to the rocket 7.1, from what I've seen down in odds and mods the RF3 doesn't even come close to the kind of monsters that Q-man has at his place. This reminds me however that I never got in contact with the other orlando area klipschers. You are all welcome to PM me here and we can see if we can figure out a time when you can come over and listen to my system(such as it is). Peace, Josh

  11. I think that personally I would start out with something like the bottlehead foreplay preamp such as Erik mentioned in his post. I would think the Foreplay would be more of a worthwhile investment then these other amps. Not to mention the foreplay preamp includes a chassis that doesn't look like leftover from some kids failure of a science project. Just my $0.02 Peace, Josh
  12. "Good bye Krell, hello S-5". Yeah right. Peace, Josh
  13. I bet that shanling can do .5 past lightspeed. Nice looking amps. Peace, Josh
  14. Hmm, Coffee and music in one unit, just add a toilet and I would never have to leave. Peace, Josh
  15. Wow, I guess I'm kinda lucky in that my apartment complex is built out of what appears to be concrete block with a thick layer of plaster over it. I talked to my next door neighbor (who's actually a friend of mine and goes to my college) and from what he said I think I have to be hitting upwards of 100dB or so for him to even tell I'm listening to music at all. Peace, Josh
  16. Very interesting John, I've been thinking for a little while that my heresies are just slightly(and I mean barely) brighter than is comfortable at higher volumes. I'll definitely think about this one. Peace, Josh
  17. hmm, Kinda reminds me of this basshorn, http://www.vt52.com/diy/myprojects/speakers/bass/bass.htm Is it just me or does the squawker horn look a little taller than a standard heresy midrange? Definitely not a heresy motorboard for the squawker/tweeter. Also the woofer looks kinda small for a 12", but then again the angle of the pic is really messing with my head It looks like some nice work on the cabinet though. Peace, Josh btw, wouldn't a "time aligned" setup with a three way like the heresy components have issues with the tweeter reflecting off of the top of the cabinet?
  18. fec, I am by no means an expert in these matters but from what I have heard the size of the box for the heresy and the fact that it is a sealed box help to limit the excursion of the woofer, the airtight box acting as a cushion behind the woofer to help keep it from bottoming out.. I think this is true for the K-22- type woofers although I believe there is an industrial version of the heresy that is ported and has a different woofer. Like I said' I'm no expert and someoneelse can propably chime in with some more specific info. Peace, Josh btw, welcome to the forum.

  20. I opened up my 1981 heresies awhile back to look at the crossover, drivers etc. Something I thought was kind of odd was that the back panel is only 1/2" thick and not 3/4 like the rest of the cabinet. When I am playing music at a decent volume(90dB or so) I can feel the back of the cabinet vibrating, even more than the motorboard. I have been thinking about putting new binding posts on for some time now and I thought I might kill two birds with one stone so to speak. I'm guessing I could cut some new backs out of 3/4" birch and put the new binding posts on those so I could keep the original back pieces totaly stock if I ever wanted to change back. What kind of binding posts would you people recommend and do you think a thicker back could improve the sound(tighten up the bass, more definition)?? Any comments would be surely appreciated. Peace, Josh
  21. wow, that's twice what I payed for my SC1 on ebay. I guess they are an authorized klipsch dealer?? Peace, Josh
  22. Running that reciever will propably be fine with the rf5 speakers. As sensitive as the rf5's are I doubt that you would come even close to using all of that power, with my heresies I get about 108dB with around 24 watts. Also running an amplifier that is underpowered can damage your speakers as much as overpowering them. Check out this article from jbl for more info http://www.jblpro.com/pub/technote/lowpower.pdf Peace, Josh
  23. Not really, The BB does this every once in awhile. It kind of forgets that people have logged out. Peace, Josh
