  1. You'll want to check with Al K on the subject of crossovers. He has a post in my 2-channel thread about Cornwall Modifications.
  2. Sorry, I thought the 650 was in the same league as my 850. Yamaha does weird things with their numbering. Let's see last year it was 2300 and 3300, now the 2nd and 3rd to top of line are 1400 and 2400. See, numbering wise is looks like a downgrade? Sorry for the confusion. Yeah, I'd stick with the 650, unless you really needed THX or the auto=-optimize. BTW, does that feature let you then 'tweak' the sound with the built-in parametric after you optimize? Or do you just have to stay with the settings it locks in?
  3. Thanks all for the good info, especially on sniping. I've decided not to bid on any khorns for now, regardless of condition, location or price. Reasons why: 1. Even my 4000 sq ft home does not have a room befitting the mighty khorns, there are either doorways within 4 ft of corner, or baseboard (radient) heat that cannot be moved. 2. Even though there is no WAF here, room layouts just would make it difficult for khorn and furniture placement. 3. Having just reread the Belgian Audio report on Cornwalls. 4. Since I setup and REALLY LISTENED to my Cornwalls in my new surroundings (Family room with very thick carpet and real 3/4" thick pine panelling) I did not fully appreciate the rich, warm sound of these speakers. Therefore, I'll continue my search for another pair of my beloved Corns. Guess I'll not graduate to the head of the class for a while, but from where I'm at it sounds pretty darned good! Thanks again. Michael
  4. Okay, so the fir ones in FL are right out. Too far, not nice cabinetry, questionable components. The OAK khorns in Muncie look do-able, but do I really need them for that price. I'm new at e-bay. Will they probably go for the 2750 BIN?, or do I need to play the bidding war? If so, according to what I've heard, that's really not a GOOD buy, other than that they are really close to me and I will be able to inspect/hear before buying. The other item is that my home is not really ideally suited to khorns. My family room does have 3/4 thick solid pine paneling, so the horns could sit against a REAL SOLID wall on one side, but I'd have to construct the fake half-walls. The other possible room has baseboard radient heat that protrudes about 2 1/2 inches from the wall. This would also make placement difficult. I have a basement room that could I could turn into a HT, with concrete block walls all the way around, but then I'd have to totally refinish the room and give acoustical treatment. In this area (heavy rains, sometimes flooding) I hesitate to put beloved khorns in a basement, even with dual sump pumps. See my predicament. I'd dearly love to own the flagship, can afford it, but maybe I'm just dreaming. Help me out IndyKlipschFan!
  5. Just bringing this back to the top. Aren't there any more Cornwall modifications that have been made? Thanks for input.
  6. very industrial (and industrious). it's a cool rock n roll look. nice job.
  7. Thanks for the mention and glad to help. Get yerself a RC7 for the center(yeah, you can mix em up okay) and YOU'LL BE SET! For the real reason why the Cornwalls are one of the best speakers ever designed for any price, read the following review: http://www.belgaudio.com/kcmap.htm I find if very illuminating reading!
  8. I've never heard of raw fir. Not much of cabinet grade, I suppose, since fir is a soft wood they make standard grade plywood and 2x4's out of. Would that be some type of utility grade cabinet? Even if they're mechanically in good shape, I'd have to drive to FL in truck to pick em up, then probably spend hours on a veneer project. The pair in Muncie sounds like a better deal. Would anyone have any particular feeling about a good price on these? Thanks for help.
  9. Thanks for the input gang. There are actually TWO sales though. The current Ebay listing w photo for the oak pair is in Indiana, very near to me. They look to be in excellent shape, but costly. The other pair is at $1600 in the Tampa area and I would have to have these pickup up sight unseen. If I can get detailed photos of woofer cone and xover, as well as all cabinet angles, would this help alleviate fears of a 'butchered' pair of khorns? Thanks for the help. I've only recently been drooling thinking about owning a pair of these babies. They almost seem easier to find than another pair of Cornwalls. In actuality, even my new home does not have a room with two suitable corners for khorns, so WHAT AM I THINKING!! HELP!
  10. how bout this pair? Muncie is about 45 min from Indy. Is this a fair price? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5711286156&category=61378&sspagename I have also been in contact with another owner who has a pair that failed to meet bid minimum. He says he'll take 800 each. They are in Tampa and I have a cousin there who could pick them up for me. In general, what is the price range depending on condition and finish? Thanks- looking forward to supplementing my Cornwalls! Hopefully you'll be able to welcome me to the next level very soon.
  11. Hey slammin! I had that FZ album memorized, how bout 'she had some bovine persperation on her upper lip area and she said, "Just get me WASTED, you're halfway there, cause when my mind's messed up, then my body don't care..."' It's all in the mind... personally, I enjoy a little Miles for those smooth moments, the timbre of that horn is just toooo cooool!
  12. Trey, I am a professional photographer in Indianapolis. Although I still use film cameras, my processor scans my film and hi-res (20MB) scans are excellent. I you can gather some products and need photographs taken professionally, I will offer my services to the Klipsch Forum at no charge to you. My way of saying thanks! Just PM or email me. Michael
  13. keep grinnin', like Wavy Gravy (from Woodstock) said WE MUST BE IN HEAVEN MAN!!!
  14. Old PA guy trick (Trey- tell us if this is advised or if it is true) We used to use this to check for polarity (phasing) when hooking up multiple sub bins for Discos. Take a 'D' cell battery 1.5 volts only and touch the woofer wires to it with proper polarity. The woofer will 'thump' once when you touch the wire to battery. If polarity is correct, the woofer will thrust outwards (away from spider and magnet).
  15. Hello HDBRbuilder, Thanks as always for the history lessons! I really enjoy your personal input into the producion process. Quick question- in the early factories, did a worker really 'build' 3-5 LaScalas in a day? Perhaps the factory used to be much smaller, but I can't imagine a single guy going through all the manufacturing steps as a lone carpenter/assembler. Or was it really a production line of specialized laborers who built an 'average' of 3-5 per day as a shop? Just trying to visualize the process. Michael
  16. keep the spacing between speakers narrow as you have it and definitely angle them in towards sweet spot. this also keeps reflections off the side walls in smaller rooms.
  17. Agree with coker- get the CENTER first. It's absolutely critical for HT listening. You can use whatever you have lying about for temp surrounds, but you cannot live without a center channel. Buy the baddest one you can afford. I highly recommend the RC7 wwoooooohhhooooooo
  18. sorry RB3II's in blond Maple veneer.
  19. Congrats! Those look in great shape. Love those Corns!
  20. As all Sci Fi fans know, the answer to the Ultimate Question... Of Life The Universe and Everything.. is forty-two thanks to Douglas Adams Hitchhikers Guide to the Universe
  21. Get a receiver that has Dolby Digital 5.1 as a minimum. That way you can at least use some of the 'surround' modes for your music listening and upgrade to home theatre soon with the addition of (in order of importance) center and rear speakers. Depending on your room size and listening preferences, your budget will probably allow 50 watts or so per channel. Look for power rated as: 50 watts per channel 20-20,000Hz, .05% THD (distortion) with all channels driven. Any lesser rating like "at 1 kHz with 1% distortion" means that it's probably about 1/2 to 2/3 the REAL power rating. It's really not critical cause it takes DOUBLE the power to make 3 decibels difference, which is a barely noticable difference. I'd stick to Sony, Yamaha, Denon, or Pioneer. At that price point you probably WONT get a phono input if that is important to you. Shop around and give us a buzz with what you've found. We're here to help.
  22. Buy em unless they're trash. Be prepared for 'eau de bar' that funky smokey/beer aroma that permeates all gear housed at bars for any length of time. Horn drivers can be repaired and Woofers reconed at very reasonable prices. You need not buy new/replacement drivers from the manufacturer. Look for local PA/guitar amp repair facilities in your area for repairs. ROCK ON!
  23. Your 'sine-wave' test may be fooling you. Sine waves are pretty and smooth, like violin notes. Linkin Park ROCKS! So your 'test' and real sound sources are entirely different. IMO you're overdriving your sub when playing music. It depends a lot on your source material. During HT use, normal movies only hit those really killer low notes once in a while, unless you're watching EARTHQUAKE! Your ROCK music has those notes several times in each measure and today's musicians have lots of tech toys to add harmonics, fuzz, etc to those notes. ?? Does Linkin's Bass player use a 5 or 6 string Bass? If so, then he's hitting notes much lower than 32 Hz (open E on normal bass gtr). For the time being, turn it down a bit until you can get a really killer sub rig.
  24. PistolPete did the same thing with his Yamaha 3300 receiver. Posted it on Klipsch Forum, then sold it on Ebay without getting back to timely posts on the Forum. Don't bother.
