  1. Congratulations. We've been there, too. My sympathy and respect to those who have endured other results.

  4. 1600 posts with a dial-up modem? THAT's loyalty!
  5. I agree on the 2" of pink styrofoam insulation from HD. Add one more inch on the bottom since our friends who ship sometimes are caught off guard by the weight and may elect to drop them suckerz instead of using their legs to rest them on the ground. Generally, they don't care about what is inside. If you did not pack well, it ain't their bloomin' fault. I'd probably feel the same way if I was in their shoes. You can put a label on the outside saying ELECTRONICS - FRAGILE. That may help.
  6. Divorce sale? They always get the last laugh.
  7. Gone. No longer available from me.

  10. Sorry to dig this thread out of the archives, but I got one of these today. The sound is, indeed, warm and very 70s. I am running a pair of Dynaco A-25 speakers. The mood is laid back - playing an old home-recording of a Dr. Demento show (must be about 18 years old on cassette) on a Sony TCKA3-ES. I am wondering what all the fuss is about regarding vintage audio. Just buy an old system, fill a glass, and enjoy. The point is music appreciation, not just gear. Here is the layout: Pioneer SX-737, Sony TCKA3-ES, Dynaco A-25. Not sophisticated, high-brow flea-watt, but plenty of soul. Retro, style, performance.
  11. The USA remains the most benevolent country in the world. We live in a great country, despite its flaws.
  12. I would imagine that, if you were looking for a "flat, uncolored" speaker, you probably do better with a good pair of JBL (monitors or domesticated versions of monitors) as they are more often used as studio monitors. In fact, 6moons used a pair of L100 to review the oft-mentioned Blueberry preamp. Just a thought.
  13. I had a pair of the 901 Series II once with the EQ. Now my basement room is small and I could not turn them up enough - the sound was deceptively high db. I once heard/saw a stage performance of two acoustic/electirc guitarists and I was amazed at the ability of the commercial version of the 901 to fill the stage with sound. The 901 is what it is - room filling sound that you will be challenged to over-drive, regardless of the amp. Excellent party speakers, IMO. If I had an opportunity to buy another pair cheap, I'd pounce. I regret selling mine, actually. They can fill a room effortlessly with a good amp. Imaging and critical listening - NO! Voluminous good sound - YES! Bose-bashers can bash the el-cheapo mass market stuff all they want. I will echo sentiment. But, the 901 stands on its own.
  14. Oh, that's $200 Canadian, isn't it? What is that in American? Seriously, that, at least, averages down your cost of all your K-horns. Congrats. I'm watching U-571 and I am wondering what four K-horns would sound like in the depth charge scene.
  15. Both are large. (What great comparison, huh?) The Altec horn can project natural voice extrememly well. HOWEVER, they are not quite the near-field home listening speaker. To get really good sound from mine, I have had to turn it up but I paid a price on good overall tone range. I don't know if an equalizer would have helped. You may do better with Cornwalls, since they were designed as a home speaker. The Altec is a domesticated commercial speaker.
  16. How does a wire connector come loose on an expensive 90 lb. speaker? What quality is the spade connector(?) on those speakers? I once bought a nice set of bookshelf speakers that had a rattle on one bass speaker. I bought them cheap and when I opened it, I found a dribble of hardened glue that had dried while hanging millimeters from the cone. Plucked it off and had a nice set of speakers until I sold them. Crappy workmanship happens. I figure it must be too expsnsive to test listen to every speaker before shipping. Hence, overhead replacement costs.
  17. What? You didn't get the "With Tubes Option?" Cheapskate.
  18. Why doesn't Craig send one of his VRDs to 6moons for serious review? I heard the mod-ed Dyna IIIs at Gary's and I believe that if the VRD bests it, we should see some throwdown in the the hoity-toity audio circles. Let's hear another one for Michigan.
  19. You guys are being really harsh on a new eBay seller. There are a lot of dum people out there who paint their speaker cabinets (i.e., customizing). It does not detract from a potentially terrific HT setup. I once had a Quartet/Academy setup and the sound was awsome - almost not needing a subwoofer.
  20. You got a gem. I have a NAD 7250PE in my office and you think that 430 has a good tuner? This NAD has the best tuner I have ever had in my house. My HK430 is somewhere in storage.
  21. Once owned a "bass module." Junky bass IMO. Sold. Once owned a pair of 901 Series II with the EQ. Unbelievable power in my small basement. Sold. Currently, Bose 301 lower surround (Realistic Minimus 7 upper surrounds). They sound great in that duty. Want a Wave in the boudoir someday - great sound for the size. Not a Bose hater...I just won't overpay for 'em. I have listened at the Bose room at the mall. Impressive for hard surfaced walls and floor when you depend on reverberation to fill in the middle ranges. The salesman are well-trained.
  22. I love the smell of pi. But why are you in CA?
