I spoke to Erik several months ago...he's fine. Been busy with school and with the minor repairs to his house from last year's hurricane, and he's over the forum and just doesn't bother with it anymore. He's pretty much assured me he won't be missed around here...

I had a TOTL Yamaha KX-930 3-head cassette deck that sounded stellar, but later developed major transport failure, so was sold as is. Back in the mid '80s I purchased a new Nakamichi DRAGON 3-head autoreverse deck and also recorded all my LPs onto TDK SA, MA, and Maxell equivalent cassettes (Dolby C, natch). After 25 years, these cassettes still sound as good as the day they were recorded! I'm still in awe after listening to my tape of Dire Straits Brothers In Arms (from my Denon DP-62L manual 'table and Stanton 981HZS MM cartridge) on my current Nakamichi DR-1...WOW! You'd think you were listening to a CD if it weren't for the occassional audible tick and pop. The only prerecorded cassettes I own are a few digital recordings from InSync Labs of various piano works, dubbed to TDK SAs using Dolby C from a bank of Nakamichi MR-1s (I believe) in their studio. Very good, but not the end-all in sound quality IMHO. It's true, though...it is all about the source material. My cassettes are all stored upright in their cases in my bedroom closet away from dust and heat. I see no reason why they can't last another 25 years or more!

Seems many Klipsch owners love vintage harman/kardon Twin-Powered receivers (from what I've read here). So the 930, if in good condition, should be perfect for the task at hand (and a keeper for any of your audio systems).

I've heard how these old harman/kardon Twin-Powered receivers are awesome with Klipsch, but why exactly? Because of their dual power supplies? Are they high-current designs? What makes these particular late '70s receivers so special? When I was searching years ago, these vintage h/k models (430, 730, etc) were dirt cheap, but I never bought one... I do have a fabulous '78 Sansui G-7000 Pure Power DC receiver that made my RB-75s sing extremely well, though...

Can't go wrong with the 5.5s. My kid bro had a pair years ago that he loved for his HT use. He only sold 'em to fund his DIY horn project back then.

I believe it's just a redbook CD player with HDCD capabilities...but I could be wrong.

I can't comment on any comparisons on the components you mentioned, but I do own Will's stereo Baldwin 6L6 power amp and it's a wonderful sounding piece of equipment! I'm confident Will's modded Baldwin monoblocks are also quite capable of making your Fortes sing, as are the Horn monos with either preamps. There's no easy answer to your question...good luck with whatever component you decide on. And welcome to the Klipsch Forums![]

Truly impressive, Ron. The transformation between what you bought and what you now have before you is totally remarkable, thanks to a great bargain and a lot of hard work and elbow grease! The smile that must be on your face everytime you fire these decorators up is probably insurmountable, knowing what a steal they were and what they have now become. Did you have to doing anything special to the associated Carver/Sony components other than give 'em a good cleaning? I'm familiar with older Carver Corp. equipment since I've owned quite a few in the past, but that amp is a complete mystery to me...can you shed any light on its specs and performance?

Great story as always, Dave. Has anyone heard from DrBill lately? As I recall, he was also quite gifted at refurbishing/rebuilding vacuum tube amps...true?

I'm also giving my BEZ and Baldwin tube gear a much needed rest and reusing my trusty ol' Sansui G-7000 stereo receiver from '78. I hafta admit, I'm truly enjoying SS again, and this definately isn't your ordinary receiver, which borrowed much of its amplifier circuitry from Sansui's TOTL amp designs back in the day.

My system went thru recent changes (due to financial circumstances beyond my control)...my beloved RB-75s are no more, but kohill is now providing a good home for them. So I'm back to using my Triangle Electroacoustique Zephyr towers, which are quite decent for older entry-level models from the French manufacturer.
