geepers those nice clean college-owned LSI's in CA went for only $660?!!??!?!

I know...when I tell folks you can get LaScala's for 400 - 800 they want to send me thru a trap door or hang me if I don't say 1200 - 1600.

There's a pair that started at 1400 and I emailed the seller a few times and explained the market...after a few re-list...he sold them with only one bidder for 600.

Obviously you have to factor shipping costs in there. It seems that $300 is what several on that list are charging for shipping. If they were picked up locally that's a different story but $300 is a lot to tack onto the actual item's cost.

"Here's a really nice pair that just sold for 355 "

You mean that trashed pair?

The water-damaged veneer is splintered all across the woofer horn, and the tweeter is hanging by one mounting screw, the ever popular AL networks.

Thanks, I passed.

To quote that emminent philosopher FogHorn LegHorn: "I keep my feathers numbered for just such an occasion!"

I can only hope that someone has to sell a minty pair of LS II's, that I could afford to buy. (Still out of my range for now.) Those are the speakers I lust after the most, no corners for Khorns. But to think that the market for ALL assets, including used stereo equipment, has not fallen precipitously is naive. Stocks, Housing, Commodities have all gotten their clocks cleaned. Do folks even realize that oil was DOWN for the year in 2008?

The issue is "Seller's in Denial". My house is worth X because I paid Y for it. No, your house is worth what someone else will pay you for it and not a penny more. As the recession continues to deepen, I hope that the Forum members have kept their powder dry to take advantage of offerings that will surely come their way. Not hoping for difficult times for others but perhaps some good opportunities for those here.

So true.....

Then we have the enablers....these are folks who paid Y+ (current owners) and want to see all like items bought and sold at the price they paid...as a result...the prospective seller who inquires for a starting sell price gets a price in the insurance apprasial realm...and winds up relisting and cutting prices until the item finally sells at current market prices....which have been in decline for almost 2 years.

I lost a few good deals that were local to me because the seller got confused by suggested value's that were not supported by facts.

yes but I want to artifically inflate the value of my collection so I don't feel so bad about life....Sad

My insurance company did throw a fit when I listed MSRP/ replacement value on household goods which I have to maintain a current list every year (with photos of any object which would cost in excess of $500 to replace.....). We negotiated and settled on exemplars of the speakers used, but in mint condition. I can live with that.

I wouldn't call this artifical inflation.....folks pay what they pay.....

I paid 149K for my house in 1999. In 2007 it was worth 550K. In 2008 it dropped to 485K. In 2009, dropped again to 435K. I'm still OK.

But, had you bought my house in 2007 for 550K (I had a door knocker offer 525K in cash), you would be feeling pretty bad right now at 435K.

I agree that $300 shipping is a substantial factor. Certainly gives an edge for those in a reasonable local pickup radius.

What I'm wondering though, isn't $300 for shipping those big rascals a reasonable shipping price?

Anyone shipped LaScalas lately? What did you spend?

IMO the raw birch with the metal trim from Baldwinsville N.Y. were suspect. Spoke to the owner on the phone. He hadn't used them in years since his DJ business closed. I asked him if he could look in the bass bin and confirm that they were infact k 43's. He said the bottom screws were so rusted he couldn't get them out. Also 1 tweeter not working.
