Do tube amps like Mcintosh mc 75 and the like really sound better.

Recommended Posts

I would like to know because i am thinking about buying the mcintosh 60th anniversary tube system. Two mc 75 monobloc amps and a tube preamp that is part of the deal.My current amp is a yamaha mx-1.which has 200w per channel. The tube amps only have 75 watts each.

A short, simple answer from me would be.... Yes. They will sound a LOT better than your current Yamaha. Really, they will. Tube Pre, tube amps and Klipsch speakers..... usually a great match for music.

That's a nice amp you bought. It runs in class A for the first ten watts, which you'll probably never exceed.

If you ever get a chance to hear some OTL amps, I'd suggest you give them a listen.

I had a most favorable experience with some although they didn't have enough power for me (4 watts).

Now that your older question is over, I'd side with Artto in that, let someone else take the depreciation. In other words, I'd say no way to buy the anniversary stuff unless you have deep pockets and wanted it for some vanity purposes.

Sounds like you made a good choice [Y]

IMHO, absof'inglootly, hands down, the tube sound is superior to solid state.

Currently I have more than one system of each, and I'll take the tube sound any day, over SS. My 2 main music listening systems play through VRD and MC60 amps. Only my vintage Luxman C05 and it's matching amp come close to competeing with the tubed systems.

My amps are 60 watt mono's. I've never had to use more than 10% that capacity (based on dial turn) to shake the foundation and rattle the windows. But then of course, my speakers are Heritage, e.g. Khorns and Cornwalls.
