slovell
Anyone have any opinions/recommendations for new turntables in the $1000 price range? Thanks, Sam [H]
jason str
You cant go wrong buying a decent Thorens, they should have something in your price range. http://www.thorens.com/home.html
Hifi jim
I've read great things about Clearaudio's Emotion. The Marantz table is very similar and made by Clearaudio. I've never seen or heard these tables though.
USNRET
I bought the Pro_Ject RM5-SE at that price from the Needle Doctor. Better available maybe, probably but it sure beat the heck out of the Technics SL-M2 I had! Only issue I have is finding (paying for) a custom built cover for it. oldtimer
What was the M2? Comparable in price? I still use "my first turntable " SL-D2 which was 100 back in 1979, and less now.
USNRET
What was the M2? Comparable in price? I still use "my first turntable " SL-D2 which was 100 back in 1979, and less now. I picked up the SL-M2 at a tent sale the military had in Okinawa in the early '80s and then invested mega bucks in a cartridge. I paid more than twice the price of the TT for the cart. It wasn't until a person from C-List bought it that I found out it was a POS (my personal opinion!), he very soon became a friend and we shared equipment to check out. My friend told me it was bad, I bought the Pro_Ject and then had to whole heartedly agree. Perhaps my M2 was the worst of the lot built, perhaps it was the best who knows. Pretty it was; actually still is. Edit: I searched this forum and found a thread about the M2, certainly no disrespect intended. Being from a AAFES tent sale, mine was probably defective from the start. http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://community.klipsch.com/forums/storage/4/1025557/Technics%2520SL-M2.jpg&imgrefurl=http://community.klipsch.com/forums/t/101691.aspx&h=225&w=300&sz=9&tbnid=yjftzIOQ5rlD0M:&tbnh=87&tbnw=116&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dtechnics%2Bsl-m2&hl=en&usg=__TBCzJWF9ExyzIEJ-B3048oljMsA=&ei=hxyXS9ixD86NlAfujaScDQ&sa=X&oi=image_result&resnum=4&ct=image&ved=0CBIQ9QEwAw
oldtimer
What do you know I'm in that thread! Still don't know much about it but cartridge/tonearm synergy is important.
jhoak
I've read great things about Clearaudio's Emotion. The Marantz table is very similar and made by Clearaudio. I've never seen or heard these tables though. I have one of the Emotions. It is a very nice table. I've been through a few tables over the years and this is clearly (no pun intended) the best one I've had. At the moment I have a cheapo cartridge (Shure M97xe) mounted while I decide whether to get my CA Aurum Beta retipped or just buy something new. If you can find a nice used one or drop the additional coin for a new one I can highly recommend an Emotion.
rplace
Scrape up 400 more bucks or get this guy to come down in price. If you are patient you can get them in the 1000-1200 range but this one has nice upgrade to the arm. Not sure about the feet, but the guy has great feedback so I take him at his word. Great table for the money they get in the used market. http://www.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?anlgtabl&1272652475&/Basis-1400-Incognito-Rega-Arm-
oldtimer
This one is practically new and you will not do better for the price. The seller also seems to have a for sale listing of the same table at $1150. If I were in the money I would look long and hard at snapping this up. http://cgi.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/auc.pl?anlgtabl&1268448219
kaiser SET say
Anyone have any opinions/recommendations for new turntables in the $1000 price range? Thanks, Sam Many good suggestions on here already Sam. For $1000 new I would look to the Thorens TD 295Mk Project RM-5 w/Blue point Music Hall MMF 5.1 Rega P3-24 in Blk Sota Moonbeam Techniques SL1210M5G (Direct Drive) There are some nice leaps in the $1000.00 to $1500.00 range and then you have Audiogon.com which can net you a lot for your money if it's a well rated trader;-) Best of luck, I just bought a brand new table and it was a tremendous jump from my Music Hall MMF 2.2 w/Grado Red (See signature and avatar, as well it should be for 6 times the price[])
