I would try it for $150 if it's working.

Marantz PM-6

150,000yen

Description

The Integrated Amplifier which adopted the design of separate

amplifier SC-6 and SM-6.

Pure Class-A 30W+30W by the stream composition

of whole page perfect push pull DC. Freshness is high and switching distortion

etc. is the power which is not generated theoretically.

moreover, even a

switchpoint comes out and a modification is also possible to AB class 120 W/ch.

Since the difference of the sound by change is contracted, the high speed high

fT transistor which fully attained wide band-ization for cut-off frequency with

90MHz is adopted as the power stage. Switching distortion called weak point of

AB class was suppressed to the relative minimum, and it is delicate and, and

yet, is finished in powerful AB class amplifier.

The control amplifier

part also serves as a Low-TIM design with the power amplifier part, and a

nakedness property is improved by the material selected carefully and the

proficient circuitry. The amount of NF was reduced and the distortion on Hearing

impression was banished.

A power-source part is filled up with the newly

developed 22,000-micro F super audio capacitor and a special resin, and the

compact transformer which took heat-resistant measures is adopted as it.

Furthermore, the heat pipe with high effectiveness was carried in the

heat-dissipation organization, and the high exothermic at the time of a pure

Class-A operation is cooled in it.

In order to raise the quality of a

disk play, the straight DC switchpoint to which phone amplifier is direct

connected to the power stage is equipped.

For this reason, the transistor

which also attains to channel 13 stone of one side is used for the

Low-noise-izing of each block, a raise in an S/N ratio, and MC head amplifier

handling a detailed signal, and it polishes even on the level which is fully

worthy also as a single article.

Moreover, a phone input switchpoint is

equipped with the cartridge loading selector of 27kohm, 47kohm, and 100kohm, and

any cartridges are supported.

The design of a right-and-left

independency is adopted as a tone control circuit. Moreover, 2 point variable

type is adopted as a loudness circuitry, and two kinds, +8dB and +4dB, can be

chosen as it in 100Hz.

Speaker change-over-switch loading in which a

simultaneous play and a change are possible.

Subsonic-Filter adoption

which cuts unnecessary super-low-pass one.

Mutual dubbing circuitry

loading by the two decks.

Oh yeah, I'd love to try that with my Heresy III's! [8-|]

There's got to be someone here that has experience with this amp? [:)]

Hey Rick, you have to keep in mind, our friend QK lives on the other side of the world and gets gear that we don't. Not surprising.

QK, I would open it up and make sure nothing is leaking, like the capacitors and if it looks good, try it!

Keep us posted,

dennie,

yes the gear that comes here is usually japanese.

lots of technics,Kenwood, sony and bla bla bullshit midfi units.

but these marantz esotecs are rarely seen.

I saw pm6 about 4 yrs ago in the hifi market store and it got sold the same day.

but I am surprised at the ignorance of forum dudes.I thought they'd instantly jump in on this.but people don't know esotecs.

surely the guy using it says its in fully operational form n scratchless.

I'm gonna get it whatever the state.

its a classic !!!!!

and its 2nd from their top models. highest being pm8 which eats the marantz pm94 for breakfast !!!!!! period . go figure

The specks show 100 volts ac, unless we jumped to another unit. Do you have 100 volts ac? I wouldn't run old gear in an over voltage situation.

Quad, it is not ignorance, it is a lack of experience for the majority of folks here. This Esotec is over thirty years old, and was very rarely sold in the US(on a relative basis.) The lack of significant sales, and the lack of response from Klipsch owners is to be expected.

That said, I have the led readout integrated, and know three other folks who have Esotec gear. They are uniformly excellant, and work quite well with Klipsch. Buy your friend's amp with confidence it will play well with Klipsch.

Quad,

$150.00 seems like not a lot of $$$ for a rare classic piece. If fully functional and cosmetically unscarred, I say go for it and try it out.

Definitely plenty more power than your 2230.

buy it! these are very nice units. I have esotec units (an SM6 and SC6) and they are truely representatives of the top of the marantz line at the time, which was near the very end of the golden age of marantz. tony

btw this, quoted from classic-audio.com, a good site for info about marantz (and pretty much any other golden age audio brand):

"The "inheritors of the crown"

Around the time of transition to ownership by Philips of the Netherlands, Marantz produced the Esotec series.

This series was, for the most part, a cosmetic rebuild of the high-end products in the 1977 through 1980 product lines, with the notable exception of a brand new turntable design, the TT1000, and the SD7 tape deck. These units were the beginning of a very high end series - there are other Esotec units that appeared in the years immediately following the introduction of the ones I'll introduce you to on this page.

These components were very good candidates for a differentiated high-end line; they offered the highest fidelity of any set of components Marantz had ever produced, and in addition, outperformed virtually anything else on the market at that time, various audiophile myths and competitor's claims notwithstanding. "Specsmanship", the supposed art of twisting specifications around to make your product look better, was not something Marantz had to participate in; using the most conservative measurement techniques, allowing for considerable headroom, and on top of all this, specifying for the minimum performance of production-line units meant that the Esotec models (and the original models which are electronically identical as noted below) were so good that they literally had no peer as a consumer product line."
