thebes
Tried it with this song 8 years ago to mixed results. It's a silly , but fun little thing. Simply add a line or two of the lyrics then pass it along until the song is done. I'll get it started: "A long, long time ago . . . I can still remember how that music . . . used to make me smile. And I knew if I had my chance . . . that I could make those people dance . . . and maybe they'd be happy for a while. But....

And do you believe in rock n' roll can music save your mortal soul and can you teach me how to dance real slow..........
RT FAN
did you write the Book of Love and do you have faith in God above if the bible tells you so do you believe in rock & roll can music save your mortal soul and can you teach me how to dance real slow When I was in college one of the bars always played this song around 2 or 3 in the morning on Saturday nights and the whole place would sing along and dance on the tables. Where did I misplace those brain cells??
thebes
Now we're getting it going. Also helps that there's more than two stanzas, unlike most pop songs. Let's continue on: Well, I know that you're in love with himCause I saw you dancin' in the gymYou both kicked off your shoesMan, I dig those rhythm and blues... thebes
Poor, poor sad Thebes. Doomed to sing alone. Don't scare me none. I can hum a tune so I'll just finish this myself I was a lonely teenage broncin' buckWith a pink carnation and a pickup truckBut I knew I was out of luckThe day the music diedI started singin'[Chorus]

thebes
Glad it brings back memories John. That's what the thread's about. Obvious Mick Jagger reference here: Now, for ten years we've been on our ownAnd moss grows fat on a rolling stoneBut, that's not how it used to beWhen the jester sang for the king and queenIn a coat he borrowed from James DeanAnd a voice that came from you and me

thebes
Thanks for pitching in Mr. Android. This has gotta be a Beatles reference: And while Lenin read a book on MarxThe quartet practiced in the parkAnd we sang dirges in the darkThe day the music diedWe were singin'

thebes
Another Stones reference and obviously the Byrds "8 Miles High", but not sure what he's getting at here: Helter skelter in a summer swelterThe birds flew off with a fallout shelterEight miles high and falling fastIt landed foul on the grassThe players tried for a forward passWith the jester on the sidelines in a cast
markgod
Here is an explanation for the lyrics http://understandingamericanpie.com/ This is really quite an interesting site and comments much about the history of rock & roll and the american youth and how it's hope for the search of an American uptopian society died . thebes
Very cool site Mark. Not buying all he's saying (hey there would be no debate if I just swallowed his views whole) but interesting and probably pretty close to what McLean was striving for. Ah but back on task: The players tried for a forward passWith the jester on the sidelines in a castNow the half-time air was sweet perfumeWhile sergeants played a marching tuneWe all got up to danceOh, but we never got the chance
markgod
Cause the players tried to take the field The marching band refused to yield Do you recall what was revealed The day the music died
thebes
Looks like we are singing a duet Mark: Oh, and there we were all in one placeA generation lost in spaceWith no time left to start againSo come on Jack be nimble, Jack be quickJack Flash sat on a candlestickCause fire is the devil's only friend
