Rights of an Audiophile

ok, i want to make up a list (a humorous list) of Laws of the Audiophile or something with that ring.

For example, when your friend compares your new SVS subwoofer to his Bazooka tubes in his Honda Civic, you have the right to flog him on the head and attach a bass shaker to his left foot...

except yours can be funny. got any, anyone? i know horned could think of some... when you get back Smile.gif

Audiophiles have the right to incur huge levels of debt, without prosecution, while pursuing their hobby.

Audiophiles have the right to "fail to respond" to any live human interaction when audio/video equipment is in use.

Audiophiles have the right to use, as they see fit, any of the following equipment tampering deterrents, alone, or in any combination thereof : electro-shock, razor wire, repellant chemicals, mechanical traps and barriers, and savage animals.

Rule Number 1

EVERYTHING makes a difference. Change the interconnects, sounds different. Change the speaker wire, sounds different. Change the power cord, sounds different. Insert a power conditioner, sounds different. Place components on isolation device, sounds different. Paint edges of CD/DVD green, sounds different. Place Mpingo Discs® on top of components, sounds different. Put little Harmonix tuning dots® on your walls, sounds different. Corollary: any "audiophile" who fails to detect or refuses to acknowledge said differences will, by this action, abrogate all claims to audiophiledom and become the target of derision and ridicule.

Rule Number 2

TRUE Audiophiles acknowledge that it is an absolute statement of natural law that YOU CAN NOT HEAR WHAT YOU CAN NOT SEE. Closely related to rule number 1, above, the audiophile acknowledges that the ear - eye - brian triumvirate acts as a synergistic fusion of sensory and perceptual evaluation and analyzation. Thus, the occlusion or obstruction of visual input in the process of audio evaluation, as by blocking the ability of the audiophile to visually identify the device or effect under test , immediately renders any judgement made as to the sonic effects of the DUT null and void. Corollary: any "audiophile" who fails to acknowledge this statement of natural law and attempts to identify the DUT solely on the basis of listening will, by this action, abrogate all claims to audiophiledom and become the target of derision and ridicule.

Rule Number 3

MONEY CHANGES EVERYTHING: the Audiophile recognizes that there exists a cosmic karma between the quality of audio reproduction and the capital cost of the reproducing element. Investing large amounts of money into the purchase of an audio component is required to achieve good sound. In conjunction with rules number 1 and number 2, above, it can be seen that everything the audiophile does will change the sound of the system, that none of these changes can be detected in an unsighted test, and that ever larger sums of money must be applied to continue to improve the sound of the system.

However, an unavoidable fact of special relativity is that the greater the force of dollars applied to an audio component, the more asymtotic the approach to perfect reproduction becomes. Absolute perfection of audio reproduction is impossible, and would require an infinate amount of money invested over an infinately long time. In the equation F = MA , the linear relationship between F and MA exists only at relatively low values. Expanded into general relativity, it can be seen that the audio component's dollar mass will result in an actual warping of space and time in the vacinity of the component, curving the path of any audiophile that approaches within Roche's limit of the component into an unending spiral of increasingly ineffectual applications of money.

Double rotflmao. Ray, what are you doing hoisting another high-tech company off the ground? You need to be a columnist for an audio rag!!! Too darn funny!

Justin et al - yours were equally funny.

Now, back to the Bill of Audiophile Rights...

Audiophiles have political immunity from sound disturbance tickets.

Cabling for a new component shall not be less than 50% of the cost of that component.

Three laws of Audiophilia:

1. Change is constant. No system stays in the same configuration for more than a week or two. A reason will always exist to justify the need for another better component.

2. Audiophilia is a male thing. Sure, there are exceptions, but most women don't care how it works, how much power it has, or if it goes to eleven. They often DO appreciate good sound, but don't care why it sounds good. Not that women aren't welcome in this hobby, but they tend to shy away from it. Audiophilia should be a topic on The Man Show. That said.....

3. The size of said male audiophile's speakers are directly proportional to same audiophiles' perception of the size of his own penis.

Tom, behave yourself. (After Austin Powers movies.)

On the main subject:

Audiophiles have the right to play their favorite 40 cuts over and over and over again. This makes us little different than Top 40 AM radio in listening habits. But it sounds soooo good on the Klipsch.
