jayu969
I just purchased a set of older Heresy's that need some work. No labels so no finish to match. I am thinking either Mahagony or Veneer. I may keep or may resell. I am thinking that Mahagony matter be better for resale if I decided to. Thoughts? Thanks, Jay
jayu969
I meant to say Mahogany or Cherry.

jayu969
If the choices were widened what would you select? Turns out that the veneer price is not too different.
Fizik
I like the mahogany, but I had also looked into this recently for someone recently and like the rosewood and zebra wood veneers as well.

Schu
I always felt Koa was "like mahogany" but much much better.
jayu969
Went with Mahogany as the place I buy from with good prices did not carry Koa. Speakers are prepped and ready. I will post of separate thread soon on my new restoration.
fuzzydog
Mahagony can look nice, but i'm partial to Cherry for its warm rich tone.
BamaMike
I chose red birch and stained cherry (Watco Danish Oil). Love how they came out. With the red birch (which is not very RED to begin with), one can pretty much stain to a wide variety of colors.

Looks like a nice color.

This really looks nice, but why would you choose birch over cherry if you were going for the cherry color?

Well... fair question, I guess. Being that it was my very first veneer job, my wife (and partner on this project) and I chose red birch for price and looks knowing we could achieve something "cherry-ish" with stain. That's my best answer and I'm sticking to it! LOL

jason str
A coat of wax works well with Mahogany for a natural look, no need to stain unless you don't like how it looks.
jayu969
Thanks jason str! I am trying to decide how to finish them. Think once I get the veneer on I will make my decision. Veneer should arrive tomorrow and I will likely start tomorrow or Friday and likely get them veneered this by end of the weekend.
jason str
A coat of wax will keep the wood the same color, just protect it. Oil will darken the finish. Clear stain with a poly or lacquer finish will also darken the finish similar to oil.
Marvel
You can also use a beeswax furniture polish too. It will protect the wood somewhat, but can easily be removed with naptha or similar if you want to try something else. The carpenter/cabinet maker where I used to work would used it on many project and it made a nice finish. Bruce
oldred
I never used bees wax.... Tried something called Briwax....what I prefer is Minwax Wax.....2 coats the last on is done then spritzing water on then using auto polisher to finish. Comes out nice. G.E.M.
