Whats wrong with this theater?

I would have never believed it until I saw those pictures. Very unusual. Normally, folks with the enthusiasm and capital to build a dedicated home theater such as this, would also have had the insight to do some research on quality speakers and subwoofer(s). Its like driving a racing car with a lawn mower engine. What a waste of a great room.

Something tells me this BOSE setup could be a temporary solution until the real speakers arrive.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

But then again, how many of us have been bitten by the BOSE marketing bug? Ill admit, I fell victim until I did more research and speaker comparisons. Some of us (to include myself) had to learn the hard way.

Awww, maan, how could he do that? I also cannot imagine those itty-bitty little Bose cubes could really fill a room that size with even halfway decent sound. What he spent on the Bose Loststyle 50 system he has listed, he could have easily bought himself a complete Reference 3 package (pair RF-3, pair RS-3, one or perhaps two RC-3s and perhaps an SVS PCi 20-39 or KSW-12 sub) with a decent reciever that would have been much much superior in sound quality. Also, I still think it would have looked very nice in that room.

I can gureentee that if I have moved into that house, the first thing to go would be the Bose and my Klipsch would go in!

The room is large. It probably doesn't get much louder than a transistor radio. Of course, that's not surprising, since Bose drivers are just about identical to those found in a transistor radio!

I can't possibly imagine what this guy was thinking. Actually, I don't think he was thinking at all.

He's filling over 3000 sq ft with this:

I don't want to sound like a dick, but maybe that's just what he wanted. Maybe he doesn't like floorstanding speakers, or whatnot. Maybe he's REAL old and doesn't like loud music or movies. He may just like sutble effects and the BLOSE is what his ears could handle. He could be one of the die hards with BLOSE and if it's new and BLOSE it's the best. Know what I mean? I have seen it over and over again in all aspects of things, cars, computers, etc. Some people don't care and get what the "media" or "salesman" suggest and say is the best. I heard the BLOSE demo at Fry's with the little super cubes or whatever they are called, and they got pretty loud and sounded ok I guess, I didn't know much at the time, but they are WAY too overpriced and probably don't have much of a lifespan with that little cube design.

To each his own I guess, his projector, screen and "theatre" are 110% better than what I have, but I have better speakers 9.gif , maybe Video is his thang not music. 2.gif

Orange Peel

" Maybe he's REAL old and doesn't like loud music or movies. "

Or maybe he has put together a system that looks and sounds better than 98% of the Home Theatres in North America and is sufficiently proud of it to show it off on a web page. He might even have the intelligence to understand that not everyone will agree with his choices but be able to accept that any who choose otherwise might still be safely allowed to cross the street unaided.

I am curious - Where did you get the notion that only the young are intelligent enough to appreciate quality sound "loud" or otherwise ?

Your post implies that this fellow has bought into Bose's advertising hype and therefore has lost the ability to think critically. I would suggest that the quote above indicates that you have lost the ability to think critically and bought into the old = stupid myth .

I happen to believe that intelligence has little to with mileage. How the F*** do you think so many of us old farts manage to get to be old farts? Some of us even display the intelligence to choose the type of speakers that you love - ( Oh now I remember !! I went to the Klipsch dealer after my caregiver read me an article from 17 Magazine about some great speakers - DOH!! - I would never of thought of that at my age!).

I was being sarcastic about the REAL old, I know not all older folks like quiet classical music, etc, I'm not that dumb. I was just trying to say that everyone has different tastes and he may like Bose, some don't and some do. We have no idea what his motives were for buying what he did, and whatnot, so I was just trying to stick up for him so to speak. There's no need to get all bent out of shape. I didn't mean any harm or flame on older folks. Wisdom comes with age, I know this, and I was NEVER implying since someone is older they all of sudden become stupid and can't think for themselves. I apalogize if you took it that way. For all WE know he may be 21 years old and likes Bose, so he put it in his theatre. People were just bashing him/her for buying Bose and having such a great theatre and wasting it with them, that I was just trying to help the person out a little. Guess it didn't work huh?

Should we all email him and tell him how bad his system sucks. You know, just to make him feel great.

I went to the mall of america once and there was a bose store so I went in to look around. I go in and they beg you to go to the presentation. I said I just wanted to look around and the lady was like no it will only take 15 minutes. So I go in the HT room they have set up. They have the bose cubes for the center and rears. In the front they have these big *** speakers that are 2'X18"X6' (W,D,H). I was like, whatever. So they do there presentation. It was like nature sounds and alittle bit of symphony music. The whole time saying how great the sound was and how cool it is to listen to a bug fly around the room. I was almost ready to stand up and say that this is crap and any 5 channnel stereo can do this. Well later on a guy walks out and pulls up a present box and shows that the little receiver was hiding under there, then he pulls out the sub from behind the lazyboy. Finally he grabs the speakers and pulls them off the walls to reveal to everyone that the bose cubes were really behind this fake decoys. As if everyone was suppost to fall over and faint. So they continue to talk about their system some more and then do a presentation with the sub. He takes foam ball and covers the port in the subwoofer. Then he removes it and repeats multiple times. He tells everyone "isn't that amazing". I was like whatever, I could feel the bass, more or less even here a difference what he removed the ball. My old Aiwa 40 watt 8" sub did more than that. So then they had a question and answer session and I finally got out of there half and hour later to my major dissapoint ment. Thats when I offically became anti bose. No where in the presentation did the music move you. It sucked. It was the same thing you could get from a Aiwa shelf system with a pair a surrouds. I actually would have rather shopped with my girlfriend at the time than go to that presentation again. End of story.

I'll have to agree with Orange Peel on this somewhat (and yes, Lynmm, I did see the sarcasm in OP's post - I do not think he intended insult to the more "cronologically gifted" folks on here).

Perhaps it is that he chose to go with Bose. Perhaps, as somebody else mentioned, he could have been very heavily influenced by his wife on speaker choice for the room (you know, the old "WAF (Wife Approval Factor)). I'll have to admit, after looking at those pictures again, the Bose do allow for a very neat, clean, and sleek installation. For thier size, those cubes can output a pretty decent sound, although I don't think it is a very good sound for the asking price. I do wonder how they would perform in a room that size though. I would be curious to just watch LotR in there once, just to see how it is compared to, say, my own setup (although the room I have is not nearly as nice).

However, I still think with a little research and effort, he could have found something better for less. Even if he did not want "big ol'Floorstanders", there are plenty of quality bookshelf sized speakers that would have look just as neat and clean in that room, but have provided much better sound than those Bose cubes could ever hope to. I would even be willing to bet that even Klipsch's own Quintets would have been better and if they are like the speakers that came with the ProMedias, they are not much larger than the Bose cubes (I have never actually seen the Quintets, but assuming from the pictures I have seen of those that have them in their setups, they appear to be about the same size and shape as the ProMedia satellites).

Some may argue that the Bose are much easier to setup and such, but in this case, look what the guy has gone through in putting together that room! A little extra effort to put together a first class system to go with that first class room would not have added much to the over all effort that went into putting together the room in the first place. Another issue is what if this guy down the road decides he is tired of the Bose and wants to get something else. He'll have to completely redo his entire audio system (and most likely, including the wiring) if he decides to go with something else besides Bose.

Earlier this year, I remember going into The Big Screen Store here in town to look at both big screen TVs and HT setups (to replace the Yamaha/Infinity setup I had at the time, especially since that Yamaha RV-702 reciever could not do Digital Dolby). They have some very nice Mitsu TVs, but the only HT they had at the time were Bose (They have since added a few other brands). I very clearly remembering asking the salesman if they had any "real" HT gear, since I was not interested in the Bose. I went on and told him that yeah, the Bose is pretty nice, but I thought it was too expensive for what you get and that I wanted something a little bigger and a little more powerful than the Bose stuff. I ended up mail-ordering the Denon reciever over the internet shortly afterwards. Very shortly after that, the Tweeter here in town opened up, carrying the Klipsch line of speakers.
